Principal's Message 6/2/2021
Here we are approaching the end of the school year! This has been quite the unique year with the pandemic and having to figure out new ways for students to continue learning. We could not have done this without you and we are so grateful to you for partnering with us to provide the best education possible for your children. We know this has not been easy and we want to say a huge thank you for working with us to support your students. Thank you so much!!
I also want to give a big congratulations to all our students for persevering and doing their best!
As we look forward to next year, I am sure you have many questions about what school will look like next year. We are thrilled to say that at this point, we are planning on having all students in school every day! Below is a letter from our superintendent with more details. Please check your email, Remind app and Shaver and District webpages regularly for updates from Shaver and the District office.
In August you will receive a welcome back letter in the mail and through an email attachment with specifics and your child’s teacher. All students will move up to the next grade. Teachers will differentiate and provide the supports each student needs to be successful.
I wish you all a wonderful Summer and look forward to a great school year and having all students back in our schools!

As we come to the end of the school year, we also recognize that in June we celebrate Pride month. June is a month where people in the LGBTQ+ community celebrate their identities, and their contributions to society. Through Pride, people celebrate their right to love who they love and be who they are as their true, authentic selves. Pride month involves acknowledging the sacrifices LGBTQ+ folks have made to simply live their lives, and to celebrate all they have achieved.
Message from the Superintendent 6/2/2021
Dear Parkrose Families and Community,
Today’s letter is to provide up to date information regarding the opening of the school year in September of 2021 and Summer School opportunities. We will continue to provide information to all of you as we learn more about the evolving health and safety guidelines for the 21-22 school year.
It is our intention to provide full time in-person instruction in the Parkrose School District next school year at all levels. At this time not all of the guidelines have been approved and released by the Department of Education, but we are integrally involved in preparing for full-time instruction while following revised health and safety protocols. We believe we will have the ability to offer full time in-person instruction even with revised guidelines.
There are some variables that are still evolving:
CDC guidance will be released within a few weeks
Oregon health and safety requirements for schools and the workplace
Face coverings
Physical distancing requirements
Quarantine rules
Communicable disease planning
We hope to publish our full time schedule as soon as we have confirmation on the statewide guidelines. We do anticipate changes to the start and end times at the elementary, middle and high school levels. But these changes are for full time in-person instruction as we experienced prior to the Pandemic. These times will be shared as soon as possible. We are working with the Department of Education and our labor groups to prepare for next school year and will have more information soon on our full time schedule.
Online Learning Interest Survey
We are considering the possibility of offering some online learning as an option for students. Our largest issue is providing the staff to help support a program. We would like you to let us know if you are interested in online learning instead of in-person instruction. Our in-person instruction will continue to provide blended learning opportunities but in-person school is where students will receive their instruction. Online learning would be students attending online with intermittent teacher support.
If there’s enough interest, our district will consider this as an option, but it would require us to move/change staff to offer this option. If interest is low, we likely will focus our efforts on reducing class sizes for in-person instruction.
If you are interested in potentially participating in online learning next year: Please complete survey here
Summer School Opportunities
Please keep on the lookout for our Summer School opportunities this summer from each of our schools. Parkrose schools will be providing at least 4 week programs beginning July 12th and ending August 5th. Programs will run 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs) with one exception, Shaver Elementary will start their program July 19th and end August 12th (Mon-Thurs). Schools are providing online applications for families to complete and share with their schools. Our school health and safety guidelines will remain the same but many activities outside where distancing requirements and rules are less restrictive.
Listed below are the current Summer School applications that are available:
For additional summer opportunities including Portland Park & Rec/SUN Camps and Elevate Oregon (Ninth Grade Counts, 5th to 6th Transition, Sports/Activity Camps & Little Lift) please visit our webpage HERE.
We are committed to getting the most up to date information to you as we learn and plan for the 21-22 school year. We will update you with school start and end times as soon as possible. We can assure you it will be a five day a week in-person schedule. We will review the online learning survey and determine if there’s enough demand to staff that option for some of our families.
We are thrilled to reimagine our upcoming school year in person. We appreciate your partnership and support. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to questions@parkrose.k12.or.us.
Sincerely,
Michael Lopes Serrao

As we end this year I feel like each and every one of you deserve a huge round of applause for the work you have done to support your children in their learning this year. This was not easy and we know it. As we all take a deep breath and get ready to move into summer, it is easy to feel like we have missed a lot this last year. I am going to challenge you to think about what you have gained, and what your students have gained. It might not be what we thought we would learn, but we absolutely learned things! Your kids learned how to use all kinds of tech skills that will support them for life (Zoom, screen-sharing, mute and camera management, creating and using online documents, clicking links and more links! Just to name a few.) They have learned patience and respect in a virtual world, which is really different than in person. They have probably learned some independence, time management and emotion regulation. They have grown and you have grown with them. We love our Shaver kids and families and look forward to being back together next year and we are very grateful for what you did this year. As always, contact me at the number above if you have any questions or need help with something.

We are happy to say that It has been four weeks since we have welcomed students back to in-person school and things are going very well! Students and teachers are happy to be in the classroom together again. We understand that some of you have made the decision not to have your child attend in person and we want to assure you that teachers will continue with the quality on-line instruction.
We have almost six weeks more of school this year and lots of important learning will continue to happen during this time both in person and in CDL. They are learning important skills so please encourage them to continue to engage in learning right up until the last day of school which is June 16th.
We have our monthly Parent Organization Meeting this Wednesday and they will be electing officers for positions in the Organization. We hope you can attend and participate in this organization. It is a great way to get to know other families and be involved in our Shaver community!

Anxiety is a word that is used a lot to describe all kinds of feelings. We can think of it as “big worries” that come and go, or we can think of it as a constant feeling of stress and worry, or something in between. We used to think only adults had Anxiety, but now we know that anyone can have those extreme feelings of stress and worry, no matter what their age. Here are some things to know:
Different situations cause stress for different people. We are not all the same and that’s ok.
Slow counting, deep breathing, tightening and then releasing muscles (squeeze and then shake out fists) are all things that can help.
Bedtime can be when worries feel bigger, so having a calming plan ahead of time can help.
Sometimes talking to someone who is not in your family is helpful. Our kids worry about making us worried so they keep it bottled up.
Anxiety can be easily treated. If your child is struggling with worries that get in the way of every-day activities, please call me and I can help.

Principal's Message 3/23/2021
I hope you are all having a nice Spring Break and students are taking a break from screen time, getting outdoors and enjoying some fresh air and exercise in the warmer weather. This is a good time for students to rejuvenate and get refreshed for the remainder of the school year and the important learning they will do April through June.
As you know, we will now be providing the opportunity for students to attend school in-person. We are excited that we are opening our schools back up and welcoming students for in-person learning! We do recognize that it is each family’s choice as to whether you want to have your students attend in-person. We understand and respect that this is a deeply personal decision for each of you. We assure you that students who do not do in-person learning will still continue to receive the high level of teaching and learning that teachers have been providing and they will keep the same teacher. There will be some slight schedule changes and your student’s specific schedule will be communicated with you by their classroom teacher.
I have included here the letters I am sending and sharing in email attachment with all families, one is for those of you doing in-person learning and the other is for those remaining in full CDL (on-line learning only). We want to assure you that we have clear protocols in place to keep students and staff safe and healthy. Please reach out to us if you have any questions. We are glad to help in any way we can.
I would like to express our solidarity and mourning with Asian and Asian American communities who are responding to last Tuesday’s racist killing in Atlanta in which six Asian women were murdered. This event represents a clear and terrifying escalation of hate crimes targeting Asian Americans in our country, where we have also seen increased racial, anti-Semitic, and anti-immigrant violence and harassment.
We want you to know that at Shaver school, we as a community, stand united in our belief that every student, family and educator’s well-being, ways of being, and experience is valued. We continue to work for racial justice in the hopes of moving towards a brighter shared future. In our school, EVERY student belongs.
We look forward to seeing all of you again after Spring break!
Letter to Families Starting In-person Learning
Dear Shaver Families;
We have waited a long time to be able to say: Welcome back to school!
You are receiving this letter because you have made the choice to have your student return to in-person learning for the remainder of the school year and we are extremely excited to have them back!
In-person learning will begin on Monday, April 5th for Kinde-5th grade and April 12th for PreK (PreK parents, please see the letter from Teacher Joelle with specifics to PreK).
We will have one week, March 22nd-26th for Spring Break and students will be back for CDL (on-line learning)
the week of March 29th.
March 29th-31st- No school Mon., Tues. and Weds. Teachers will provide on-line work for students.
April 1st and 2nd (Thursday and Friday) - Distance learning from 9:00-11:00, sign on to zoom with teachers.
I am sure you may be wondering what your student’s in-person half-day will look like. At the end of this letter there is a visual schedule for you to see the days and hours your student will attend in-person learning at Shaver along with the continued CDL (on-line learning) schedule. Your student will be in either cohort A or cohort B. Their teacher has let you know which cohort they are in. If you have any questions, please call or email our front office.
In-person school is from 12:30-2:45. When students arrive at school, if they are in 2nd-5th grade they will enter through the front doors of the building. If they are PreK-1st grade, they will enter through the door up the ramp through the iron gate. Students will either ride the bus, walk or get dropped off in a car. We will have staff greeting and guiding students as they arrive. Students will go directly to their classrooms and their teachers will be waiting there for them. Students will not be required to wear uniforms. Students will be provided with an individual bag of all supplies needed and there will be no sharing.
If your student is a walker or dropped off - please DO NOT have them arrive before 12:25. If your child is a bus rider, you will soon receive info. on their bus stop and pick up and drop off times. As always, the parking lot will be closed for all traffic. At 12:25 students will be let into the school and directed to their classroom. The front office hours are from 8:00-3:30. Adults other than staff will not be allowed in the school. If you need to pick up your child early or need something, please buzz the doorbell and someone will come out to you. We apologize for this and please know that you are always welcome, but it is necessary to limit possible covid exposure. We are here to assist you in any way we can. You can call the office at any time.
Students will be required to wear a face mask while they are at school and on the bus unless they have a medical exemption. If they refuse to wear a mask or exhibit any COVID symptoms, they can not stay at school. Please check your child for the following COVID symptoms before sending them to school: coughing, runny nose, shortness of breath, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of taste or smell. If they have any of these they can not attend school. We will do a visual check of students when they arrive at school. If your child exhibits or develops these symptoms while at school, we will isolate them from others in a health space, look after them, and contact you to pick them up. Please make sure we have updated phone numbers for you in the front office. We are doing all this to keep everyone healthy, thanks for your help!
The in-person school time will consist of increasing their individual skills, project based learning, enrichment, social/emotional learning, recess, building relationships and community. Your child’s teacher will give you a specific schedule of their day and the expectations for work in class and at home.
When the day has finished, teachers will walk students out of the building and to the bus, car or walker area. All students will be given a bag meal to take home at the end of each day. If they ride the bus, it will need to remain in their backpack as food consumption is prohibited on the bus. A sack lunch will also be offered for families to pick up between 11:15-12:15 daily. Students will NOT be eating at school.
Thank you for entrusting us with your children, we will do everything possible to ensure their well being and safety. We are very excited to be able to open our school once again and begin to do in-person instruction for our students!
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out. Thank you!
We are Proud to be Shaver Tigers!

Letter to Families Choosing CDL (On-line Learning) Only
Dear Shaver Families;
There will be some slight schedule changes and below is a visual schedule of your child’s day if they are doing CDL (on-line) only. Your student’s specific detailed schedule will be communicated with you by their classroom teacher.
There will be no new content taught during the in-person time in the afternoon. All new content will be taught in the morning when all students are doing CDL. In the afternoon, in-person students will be doing projects, enrichment, extensions, recess, community and relationship building.
You do have the option of changing your decision and having your student attend in-person learning. You just need to let us know and we will need a week or two to make the change. We welcome your student if you decide to have them attend in person.
We will have one week, March 22nd-26th for Spring Break and students will be back for CDL (on-line learning) the week of March 29th.
March 29th-31st- No school Mon., Tues. and Weds. Teachers will provide on-line work for students.

Parkrose Reopening Update from Superintendent Lopes Serrao
Dear Parkrose,
I am reaching out to you to share our recent decisions regarding the reopening of our buildings for hybrid in-person instruction in Parkrose. On Friday, March 12th, Governor Brown provided districts with her newest executive order 21-06. This order requires Kindergarten through 5th grade to begin offering in-building instruction by the week of March 29th, 2021, and 6th-12th grade by the week of April 19th, 2021.
Transitioning to hybrid in-person instruction requires intensive training of our staff, and we will use the week of March 29th to prepare our elementary staff for our Hybrid start on Monday, April 5th. Please note our change of school schedule for the week of March 29th:
We will have no elementary school from March 29th-31st. These three days will be focused on the training that is necessary for our start -- cleaning and screening procedures, how to account for students' cohort groups, CDC-approved strategies for bathrooms and playgrounds, safe entry and exits, etc. We will ask teachers to provide some asynchronous work for students for Mon., Tues., and Wed. of that week. Thursday and Friday, April 1st and 2nd, we will have distance learning from 9 am to 11 am in all K-5 schools.
Summary for Elementary Schools the Week of March 29th:
- March 29th-31st- No school Mon., Tues. and Wed. Asynchronous work will be provided.
- April 1st and 2nd- Distance learning from 9 am to 11 am (Thursday and Friday)
- Hybrid instruction begins and continued distance learning on Monday, April 5th
Parkrose Elementary Hybrid Plan
After surveying families, meeting with students, and talking to multiple stakeholders we have created a schedule that tries to meet the complex needs of the Parkrose community. The plan goes as follows:
We will continue to offer Comprehensive Distance Learning to all students from 9 am-11:30 am Mon., Tues., Th., and Fri. Wednesdays will be a modified schedule with an online class meeting for all students.
- Distance learning students will have some small group and specialized instruction in the afternoon hours, this will include specials ie, Music. However, classroom teachers will be in person so they will not be able to provide support during this time.
Students who choose hybrid will attend in cohorts 2 days a week for 2 hours and 15 minutes, for a total of 4.5 hours a week.
- There will be two cohorts: Cohort A will meet on Monday and Tuesday from 12:30-2:45 pm. Cohort B will meet on Thursday and Friday from 12:30-2:45 pm.
- Lunch will be provided for students to take home. We will not eat lunch at school to keep students at low risk.
- Meals will be available at all elementary school sites.
Preschool at Prescott and Shaver will begin the week of April 12th- schedules will be provided to families enrolled in Preschool.
Why this plan?
- Due to many families asking for both services, (55% asking for hybrid and 45% requesting CDL) it makes it very challenging to provide a high-quality experience for all students with our current staffing levels. This option provides the opportunity for some in-person time but also keeps a similar routine that all of our students have experienced this year and allows us to keep students with their current teacher.
- Staff need time to prepare and support all students, so we needed to modify the day on Wednesdays to provide time for feedback, preparation of lessons, and communication to families.
- For families who may decide to move from Distance Learning to Hybrid, we expect to be able to accommodate those families. We do ask for families who change their mind to attend Hybrid, please provide 2-week notice so we can provide space for your child to attend in person.
What’s next?
- Families will receive contact from school staff this week starting Wednesday to finalize their choice to move to hybrid or remain in comprehensive distance learning.
- The week of March 29th, families will be informed of their cohort/days assignment for hybrid.
- Our new hybrid schedule will begin on April 5th, and distance learning will continue.
What about 6th-12th grades- Parkrose Middle School and Parkrose High School?
- We have a proposed plan that would condense the current course schedule into the morning hours with CDL, so all students can access classes in a fashion similar to elementary school.
- The afternoons on Mon., Tues., and Thurs., would provide up to 2.5 hours of in-person support for students with a small cohort of students with their assigned case manager. Due to the potential number of students, we can only guarantee one day per week, but there is the possibility of additional days depending on the students who request in-person support.
6th-12th Grade Family Survey
- We will be sending a survey to 6th-12th grade families at the end of this week for you to share your preferences based on a proposed schedule. Stay tuned for more information.
Family Reopening Listening Session Tonight at 6 pm (We will record and post online)
We recognize this is a lot of information to process, and we will be reaching out to elementary families this week to answer any questions you may have. In addition, we will host a family listening session tonight at 6 pm. Zoom link here
We thank you for your patience as we transition again to another step toward fully reopening our school sites. We will continue to keep you updated as we move forward with offering in-person opportunities in Parkrose. This has been a tremendously heavy lift for everyone to navigate school this year. We appreciate your partnership and support. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to questions@parkrose.k12.or.us.
Sincerely,
Michael Lopes Serrao
Superintendent
PS: This video will be shared with staff and students regarding what school routine will look like when students come for hybrid support. (Translating YouTube Video Captions)

It’s March and Spring is almost here, I am sure you are all looking forward to warmer weather, especially after the Winter storm we just had. Last month we celebrated Black History month and had a wonderful assembly with guest speakers from the community and Shaver students sharing stories, poetry and other things. This month is Women’s History month and we will be celebrating and highlighting women’s contributions to history, culture and society. We will have a special assembly on zoom to celebrate this, we welcome you to join us!
We just finished all our mid-year reading and math assessments to see how students are doing and determine how to best support their growth and learning during CDL. We have Parent/Teacher conferences on March 11th and 12th. Teachers are in the process of contacting you to set up a time that works for you to meet with them. They will be sharing report cards and other information with you. They look forward to meeting with you and partnering in your child’s success. We will not have on-line classes on March 5th, a grading day for teachers and March 11th and 12th we will be doing conferences.
Our superintendent emailed a survey to all families regarding the possibility of students returning to school for in-person instruction in April. Please take a moment to fill this out so we know if you want your child to return to in-person school. We know you have many questions and we want you to be as best informed as possible in making this decision. Please contact your child’s teacher or our secretary, Sharon with any questions you have. We are more than glad to answer your questions and help you with this decision. We are always here to support you in any way we can!
Our District developed a survey to help determine our decision to return to in-person instruction of elementary age students (preschool-5th grade). Please complete the survey to help the district decide how we will serve our students later this spring. We have also emailed families a copy of this communication via Synergy our Student Info. Database.
We ask that you complete the survey by Friday, March 5th, 2021. Your choice on the survey helps us understand the number of families who would return to school on a potential 2 day a week schedule. The 2 days are to create smaller groups of students and keep our social distance while wearing masks at school.

What do we know about sleep for our kids?
We all know what it feels like when our kids don’t get enough sleep, but what is “enough” and why is it important?
How much do they need? Kids between 3-5 yrs old need 11-13 hours a night. School aged kids need 10-11 hours a night. That means if your children wake up for school at 8:00 a.m., they should be in bed between 8-9 the night before.
Getting them to bed is hard! It sure can be! Children often act as if they're not tired, resisting bedtime and becoming hyper as the evening goes on. All this can happen because the child is overtired. Setting a routine can help. Turn off all screens (phones, tablets, computers, tv) at least 30 min. before their bedtime is a good idea. Things like brushing teeth and reading a story are a good thing to do right before they settle in.
Does sleep help us learn? Of course, when you are tired it is harder to learn, but did you know that some stages of sleep actually help us hold on to the things we learn through the day? When we are in our “slow wave sleep” our brains “ lock-in'' all the things we learned that day so that the next day we can use them. If we miss out on good sleep we have to keep re-learning the same thing!

I have been joining zoom meetings on a regular basis this year and we have covered ideas of friendship, problem solving and bullying. I am now working with students on ideas of personal safety. This will include age-appropriate instruction on things like physical and emotional boundaries, how to pay attention to your gut emotions that often tell you when something is wrong, and body safety. If you have any questions or would like to see the materials I use for this, please feel free to call or text me at the number above, or email me at readchr@parkrose.k12.or.us

Principal's Message 1/4/2021
Hello Shaver Families,
Welcome Back and wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year! I know these are challenging times and I am thinking of all of you and hope you are all well. I hope you had a good Holiday break and students had some rest and time to rejuvenate and are ready to be back in on-line school. Our teachers and staff are looking forward to seeing students and continuing to provide them the outstanding education they deserve. School begins tomorrow, Tuesday, at 9:00. Your child’s teacher has been in communication with each of you regarding specifics and they are glad to support you in any way they can.
I know you are all thinking about when we will be able to return to school in person. We are hoping that we will be able to do that sometime this year but, of course, the health and safety of all is of utmost importance. Our school board will be evaluating the situation with COVID at the end of January and making any decisions and beginning plans for changes at that time. In the meantime, all on-line learning will continue. Our superintendent, Michael Lopes-Serrao, will be learning more this week about the reopening announcement that the Governor made over the Winter Holiday break. He will be sharing updated information with the School Board next Monday, January 11th at 6:30 pm. He will also be scheduling community listening sessions this month to share updated and accurate information with all of you. He is keeping you updated through community email and I will continue to update you as well.
We have our monthly PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) meeting for January on zoom this Wednesday at 6:00. Please see the link below. We look forward to sharing information with you and answering any questions you have. We hope to see you there!
Please be sure to reach out to me with any questions or feedback you have, we are all here to support you as best we can.

Welcome back to all our families! When we return to school after winter break, we typically “reset” our expectations for students and staff, just to make sure we are all clear about how to be successful. It’s part of what we call PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions and Support. It’s a great time to “reset” our expectations at home, too. Maybe your kiddos are old enough to take on a new chore, or graduate from an old one. Maybe you would like to help them set goals to learn something new, get more active, reduce video game time or increase acts of kindness. Small goals help us reach bigger goals, and as we are all still under “stay at home” orders it could be helpful to have something else to focus on. As always, feel free to call or text me at the number above if there is any kind of support you need. Happy New Year!

Hello Shaver Families,
We have one more week of school before our Winter Break! We know on-line learning has been challenging at times and we applaud students for regularly attending on-line class and doing their work assignments for the past three and a half months. We are so proud of our Shaver students for the hard work they have done and their commitment to their own learning! We also thank you for your support in the education of your child, we could not do this without you, together we are a team!
During Winter break, we are encouraging students to take a break and minimize on-line learning. We want them to have time to relax, restore and rejuvenate. We do, however, want them to maintain the learning they have done. One of the best ways to do this is to keep reading, have your child read thirty minutes a day, have them read aloud to you and read with you. Reading is the foundation to all learning! We hope students come back remotivated and ready to dive into learning again.
We hope you all have a good Winter break and enjoy time with loved ones. We wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Well I don’t know about you, but it feels like I have been sitting since September. I know our kids feel that way, too. Even though it is Oregon and we don’t have the best of weather there are still ways to get moving, and I think it will be important during our Winter Break for all of us to get a break from technology. Here are some ideas! Have your student read a real book, not something on a device, then have them act out a scene from the book. Take a walk around the neighborhood with a list of things to look for like a yellow leaf, a pinecone or a rock the size of the tip of your finger. You could even take your phone and snap pictures of things on your list instead of collecting them. The longer the list, the longer the hunt! You Tube has Yoga With Adrienne and along with her dog, Benji, they take you through super simple yoga practices, no equipment necessary! Set up a simple circuit training routine, for example, wall push ups, sit ups, balancing and jumping jacks. Maybe make it a challenge to see who can go through the circuit every day! Dance Party!!!! Umbrella walks, bundle up! These are just a few ideas, and I know you have more. Let’s get moving during this time. It will be good for our minds and bodies!

Principal's Message 11/19/2020
Hello Shaver Families:
Here we are almost to the end of November and we are so happy to see that students continue to attend class on-line every day and work hard. We are so grateful for your partnership with us in your child’s education. We appreciate your support and understand that distance learning is challenging in many ways and can cause frustration. Please know that we are fully committed to your child’s academic and social/emotional growth.
Next week we have Parent/Teacher conferences and teachers look forward to meeting with each of you individually on zoom. Teachers have been in contact with you to set up a time that is convenient for you. We hope you can be there, the parent/teacher partnership is so important to your child’s success and especially with distance learning.
At conferences teachers will be sharing your child’s report card. These report cards are a way for you for you to know the grade level standards and what your child is expected to know by the end of the school year. Teachers want to let you know the progress your child is making so you can continue to team together in their education. We know this is not the same as learning in school in person, however, we are still committed to teaching students grade level standards and are here to support you and your child in any way we can. We hope to have on-going, regular communication with you. We are all in this together, proud to be Shaver Tigers!
Hello from our Shaver Tiger Mascot!
Communication from the Superintendent- Governor's Announcement
As you know, the governor of Oregon announced a “freeze” this week to curb the spread of COVID-19. I want you to know that we will continue to provide educational materials for students, we have ways to hand these off to you while protecting everyone’s health. We will also still be providing sack lunch pick up at Shaver M-F and Food pantry on Wednesday. Below you can see our Superintendent’s letter to the community.
Counselor's Corner
It is not unusual for families to feel a sense of stress as we approach winter break. There are holidays, expectations and big events that take time and money not typically built into a family schedule or budget. Although this year we may not have the typical holiday celebrations due to Covid, it does not mean we don’t have the stress. When there is stress, everyone talks about “taking care of yourself” but that is often a luxury that parents don’t have. It is important, however, to find something that settles you, that slows you down for a minute. At Shaver we teach kids about the importance of intentional breathing and how it helps your brain do better thinking and planning. Maybe you could set a timer on your phone and take 3 deep breaths every hour. Self care can be small but it IS important. It’s good for you and it is good to model it for your kids. They learn by watching us. If this season is especially stressful for you and you do not feel like you can do it alone, there is help. Multnomah County has a crisis line and you don’t need to be in full blown crisis to call them. They have resources and ideas for you. The number is. 503-988-4888. As always, call me if there is something I can do to support you. You’ve got this!

Hello Shaver Families,
We have been in on-line school for just over five weeks now and students are attending regularly and engaging in learning. Thank you for partnering with us to make the start of the school year such a success. We want to keep this momentum going through to Winter break and our school-home connection is vital to this, so let’s stay connected!
We are having our virtual Back to School Night this coming Wednesday. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you with details and sending you a zoom link. This is a great opportunity for us to join together in supporting your child’s continued growth. We hope to see you there!

Well here we are deep into Fall! Your kids are doing amazing things online and your support for them is clear. We know the balance is tricky! I read something recently that really stood out to me. We, as adults, have two ways we can help our kids through this whole situation. The first way is to promote feelings of sadness and loss, giving them messages about all the things they are missing out on and that this is just awful and unfair. For sure we are feeling some of that, but that also sets our kids up to feel powerless and like victims. The second choice is to acknowledge that this is hard, and we wish it were different, but we are going to get through it. We might not like what we have to do, but we don’t always get to choose. We can teach them the things they CAN choose, like attitude, work ethic and effort, feelings management. This builds resilience in our children! They can do hard things and so can we. It doesn’t mean we can’t take a minute to feel the sadness of change, but if we stay there, we get stuck. As we studied the character trait of Resilience in October I noticed it in our students more than ever.
November is the month of Communication. We use our words and our bodies to communicate. At Shaver we teach kids about body language, tone of voice and how to use words to make a point or get what you need. We teach kids that if you don’t feel brave enough to say something, maybe you can write it or draw it or have someone help you say it. Teaching communication skills to our students will help them find their place in the world, help them know their importance.
As always, reach out to me if I can support you or your student. My number is listed above.

Principal's Message - 10/05/2020
Hello Shaver Families,
It is hard to believe it is October already and Fall is here. We have been in on-line school for two and a half weeks now and lots of teaching and learning is happening. Thank you parents and guardians for supporting your teachers and your child’s learning. The home-school connection is more important than ever now and we want to be partners in providing the best learning possible for students.
Thank you so much for all your patience as we navigate through this new way of teaching and learning together. We understand that this can be hard at times. It is great to see all of you doing what you can to get students set up in a space at home where they can do their work and attend to learning. We know Distance Learning is a challenge for families juggling work, childcare and having your children learn from home. Please know we are here for you!
It is very helpful to teachers if students can have video turned on the chromebook so teachers can see them. We do understand that some of you may prefer that your child not have the video on. Teachers have been checking in with each of you to be sure you are okay with them encouraging your child to have the video on. It improves the teaching and learning if they can see your child and the work they are doing. We also want to remind you to be aware that everything that is going on behind your child can be seen and heard by all students and the teacher so please be careful.
Teachers, students and families have been working through and figuring out the technology and accessing all the learning. We are all here to support you in getting connected and providing chromebooks as needed. We ask you to be sure that you teach your child to take care of the chromebook, each one costs $200 and if it is damaged or broken, we are required to ask you to pay the replacement cost. We have a limited supply and want everyone to have what they need. Please remind your child to take care of the chromebook and handle it with care and not to have liquids and food nearby to avoid spilling on it. If your child’s chromebook is broken, we will of course, replace it, we want every child to be able to participate in on-line learning.
We have two upcoming events that we hope you can attend:
Parent Teacher Organization Meeting - October 7th on zoom 6:00-7:00, see flyer below
Back to School Night - October 28th on zoom 6:00-7:00.
Your child’s teacher will be contacting you with more details.
Stay in the know by following us on:
This past week we completed DIBELS reading screenings on all students to check their fluency so we can know how to best support them in becoming fluent readers. Next week, on Monday, we will begin iready math diagnostic assessments. Your teachers will be sharing more details with you and guiding students through this process as they do this all on line. They have been using iready math for learning so they are familiar with this. Please do not help your student in answering questions on the assessment. We want to know what they can do on their own so we can best support them in building their math skills and knowledge.

Letter from the Superintendent
Dear Parkrose,
I am writing to inform you that the Parkrose School Board of Education made the difficult decision to extend comprehensive distance learning through Jan. 29th, 2020. This decision is based on the current health metrics in Multnomah County and across the state of Oregon. Due to persisting COVID-19 rates that aren’t near the metrics needed to open to a hybrid in-person model, we will extend our distance learning program into the winter.
The case metrics have slowly declined over the past month, but have started to increase again in the past week. The state of Oregon metrics are as follow:
To restart Pre-K through 3rd grade in a hybrid model the guidance requires less than 30 cases per 100,000 and a positivity rate of less than 5% in our county and across our state. These metrics must be in place for a minimum of 3 weeks.
To restart 4th-12th grade in a hybrid model the guidance requires less than 10 cases per 100,000 and a positivity rate less than 5% in our county and across our state. These metrics must be in place for a minimum of 3 weeks.
Unfortunately, these cases continue to persist and this past week is at 45 cases per 100,000 and a positivity rate of 5.2%. Our district will continue to monitor these metrics and if we get to a point where the rates significantly decline, we will consider taking action to start a hybrid model.
Our district is working on a plan to provide some limited in-person instruction as allowed by the state of Oregon. This would be to provide additional support for some special education students and students who are learning English. Currently we are creating a plan that provides for very limited in-person support for specific groups of students. We will provide more information to families as we start these opportunities for some students.
The health and safety are a top priority for our students and staff. However, we recognize that distance learning can be challenging for everyone and we are doing our best to provide a high quality online experience. We deeply appreciate your grace and patience. Please feel free to send questions to questions@parkrose.k12.or.us.
Sincerely,
Michael Lopes Serrao

Principal's Message 9/21/2020
Hello Shaver Families,
First of all, I hope all of you and your loved ones are safe and well after the week of fire and smoke we had in Oregon. In spite of it all, we had an incredible first three days of school with Distance Learning. We were thrilled to see so many students set up in work spaces and ready to engage in their virtual classroom community and begin learning. Attendance was great and it was so exciting to see all the students. We are glad that you were all able to get the school supply bags that teachers put together so students have what they need.
These first few weeks of school, teachers are focusing on creating their virtual classroom communities, getting to know each other and setting, routines, procedures and expectations for Distance learning. We are also making sure everyone has the technology they need and are able to access learning.
Please be sure to reach out to us if you need any support. We want to be sure every student has access to and can fully engage in learning.
Teachers will be in regular, ongoing contact with you and they will also be setting two thirty minute office hour times each week so that is set aside time you know you can reach them.
Teachers have gone above and beyond to create a successful learning experience for students.
Here are some PHOTOS of the teachers’ first days teaching through distance learning.

Principal's Message 8/26/2020
Dear Shaver Families,
First of all, I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. These are some very challenging times and everyone has been impacted in different ways. We are a community at Shaver and we are here to support each other and we will get through this together!
We are getting ready to begin a new school year and as you know, at this time, students will not be returning to our buildings for in person learning. We are very saddened by this as each year we look forward to our wonderful community of students, family and staff all being together. We assure you, however, that we are going to make this the best Distance Learning experience possible.
We have been working hard to prepare an engaging and dynamic learning experience for students. District staff, content specialists, teachers, principals, and the Parkrose School District have developed plans to help make the transition to distance learning as smooth as possible for students and families. Shaver staff are committed to the academic and social/emotional success of all our students. We believe it is so very important to partner with you and look forward to working together to ensure the best possible experiences and outcomes for Shaver students.
Included with this letter is a list of all the Shaver staff and the school calendar. We are happy to welcome the following new staff, Hanna Ukbazghi/1st grade, Eva Zekry/ELD and Quynh Nguyen/SUN site coordinator. This week you will be receiving an email with the name of your child’s teacher.
Below are things to keep in mind as students move from school-based learning to distance learning:
Be patient with yourself and your student. Moving our entire school system to distance learning is new for all of us.
We understand that these circumstances may be stressful as you adjust to working and caring for family members while supporting your child’s learning from home. This is challenging and we will support you and your child as best we can.
Our outstanding instruction will continue from our teachers. We are hoping parents and guardians can assist in connecting students to distance learning content and resources.
Please do your best to have your child follow our daily learning schedule. If possible, please create a workspace at home for your child.
We encourage you to access the many resources we have at our school. We want to support you in any way we can.
Here is what a typical day will look like while we are Distance Learning. Once your child’s teacher makes contact with you, they will give you more specific details.
School Day begins at 9:00
9:00-12:00: Community Circle, Instruction in Reading, Math and Writing.
12:00-1:00: Lunch break - each school will have a free sack lunch Monday-Friday 12:00-1:00.
1:00-2:30: Individual and small group student check in and instruction, music, art and projects.
School day ends at 2:30
Things for you to know:
School begins on Monday, September 14th for Kindergarten - 5th grade.
We welcome you with our Virtual Back-to-School Information Session on Sept. 3rd at 6:00. Here is the link to the zoom invite: Click here or the phone entry +1 301-715-8592 We hope to see you there!
Each student who needs a computer, will be loaned a District Chromebook and given all the school supplies needed for Distance Learning. You can pick these up at Shaver School on September 9th. We will be sending more details and teachers will contact you.
We know that questions will arise as we work through this new process together. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher first and then to me.
Teachers will be in contact with you and your child the week of August 31st.

Principal's Message 6/3/2020
Hello Shaver Families:
Our last week of this school year is next week. We are usually together celebrating in different ways and saying goodbye to each other. On the last day we stand outside and blow bubbles, give hugs and wish each other a wonderful Summer and look forward to the next school year.
This year it is different, however, we are still doing some of our celebrations and goodbyes but in a different way. We will have our 5th grade promotion on Thursday, June 11th at 10:00. Please see the flyer and attached letter to 5th grade parents below. We look forward to celebrating our 5th graders and wishing them well! Along with the drive through promotion, we have created a video of all our 5th graders that we will share with everyone.
On Tuesday, June 9th, from 12:00-2:00, there will be a car parade for the graduation of our Parkrose High School students. There is a map of the route that has been shared with all families. We hope everyone will line the streets and cheer our graduates on.
Distance Learning:
We encourage you to have your child continue to engage in iready Reading and Math throughout the month of July and to read and practice math. Students will have access to teacher google classrooms throughout the whole Summer and can use the resources and work that is posted there. Families that have borrowed chromebooks can keep those until we return to school. Remember to check out our Shaver YouTube channel, we have posted lessons and messages for you to see.
Next School Year:
At this time, we are still planning for what school will be like next year. Our superintendent is sharing updated information with you regularly.
I wish you all a good Summer and I truly hope that we can all be back in school together in the Fall. We all miss our students and families so much!

Principal's Message 5/28/2020
Hello Shaver Families:
I hope you are all doing well and are able to get outside and enjoy this beautiful, warm, sunny weather. Next week will be June and it certainly feels like Summer is approaching. Our school year will soon be coming to a close. It is for sure not the end we expected or wanted but we are getting through this together. June 11th is our official last day and the final day teachers will be providing lessons and learning for students. If you have any school library books, please drop them off at Shaver Tues-Thurs next week between 8:00-3:00. We would appreciate it.
We will be having our 5th grade Promotion celebration on June 11th and we hope all of our 5th grade students and families can make it. Please see the flyer and letter below for details.
This week I was able to visit several classes through zoom meetings. It was wonderful to see students and their smiling faces and hear them talk and share. I miss everyone so much!
Counselor's Message 5/28/2020
Shaver families, I miss you! This week I want to give you permission to take care of yourself a little. This will look different for everyone. Maybe you just go into the bathroom and close the door for 5 minutes and take some deep breaths. Maybe you can go sit in your car for 5 minutes and close your eyes. Maybe you just sit at the table, put your earbuds in, put your head down and take a time out. So much has been asked of you and you are doing hard things! It is such a good example for our kids when we take a step back and say “I need a minute for myself” but it is also just really good for you. Take a minute or two for yourself. Make it a habit. You’ve got this! If you ever need to reach out I am available T-TH at 503-897-8221 or email me at readchr@parkrose.k12.or.us
Occupational Therapist's Message
Fine motor skills are the movements we make with the small muscles of the hands. These skills develop rapidly from birth to age 6. After age 6 they can be even more refined with continued practice. If students fall behind in the development of their fine motor skills they can become less interested in writing. The activity may be challenging and can cause students to actively avoid handwriting tasks. Through the use of art based activities students of all ages can be creative, solve problems and build strength and coordination of their hands. This week I have shared a link to Art For Kids Hub. There you will find videos that encourage students to draw things like ships, flowers and even movie characters!
The challenge this week is to follow the link, watch a video and draw a picture. When finished share the picture with a friend, family member or even your pet!

Hurry and share your video so we can have a fun Talent Show!
Principal's Message 5/21/2020
Hello Shaver Families,
It is hard to believe that we are almost to the end of May and we have only three weeks of “Distance Learning” left before the end of the school year on June 11th. Teachers really hope students stay engaged in learning and get as much as they can out of these last few weeks of learning.
Teachers have been working hard to keep students learning even though they are not in front of them and we hope you will encourage your child to do their best from home. Thank you to all the families that have been actively engaged in learning and communicating with teachers during this challenging time. We understand it has been hard and we appreciate your efforts and commitment to your child’s education.
As we approach the end of the school year, we have some traditions to celebrate our students. Even though we are not all together at school, we still want to celebrate the best we can.
One tradition is our 5th grade promotion in which we honor and recognize the achievement of our 5th graders and wish them well as they move onto Middle School. We will miss them all!
We are going to have a drive/walk through ceremony in the Parking lot of Shaver school on June 11th at 10:00. Please see the below flyer and letter to parents with all the details.
All our teachers and staff will be there to cheer on our 5th graders!
Counselor's Message 5/21/2020
Greetings Shaver families! I have spoken with many parents over the last few days who have told me they are tired. If you are tired you are not alone. Some parents have told me it is harder to get their students to do the work, some parents have told me they are reaching the end of their resources, some families are just tired of each other! None of this is a surprise and don’t be upset with yourself for feeling that way but DO reach out if you need help. We still have some ways to help families with basic needs, we still have staff who can help with emotional support and our teachers are standing by to help your students keep working towards their goals. We can only help if we know you need it, so reach out. I can receive calls or texts on my school cell number at 503-897-8221 or email me at readchr@parkrose.k12.or.us.
Occupational Therapist's Message
A big part of a student’s day both in a traditional school setting and with distance learning, is to engage in activities like handwriting. Taking hold of a pencil to form letters, write on lines, and copy words is a multi-sensory experience for a child.
Written communication depends on a child’s ability to make accurate and legible marks on paper. Handwriting and sensory processing are naturally associated. The components of handwriting require integration of our senses for accuracy, legibility, and performance. While in a classroom environment, student’s are constantly bombarded with sensory information that comes in through the eyes, ears, skin, muscles, and joints. The brain then organizes the information by selecting the important parts, and disregarding the rest. When a student’s sensory system is working well they can better manage school activities. When these systems are not functioning adequately school impacts may arise and can cause problems with handwriting. Some examples may include heavy pencil pressure, poor letter formation, difficulty with letter size and form, fast or very slow speed of writing, and inattention to writing tasks.
If your student is challenged with handwriting here are some things you can try at home to support them:
Provide movement breaks before beginning an activity that requires handwriting (go on a walk, do an obstacle course, ride a bike or a scooter)
Take a chewy or crunchy food break before or during the activity (fruit leather, licorice, vegetables, popcorn, pretzels, dry cereal)
Remove distractions and provide a quiet work space
Provide your student with both written and verbal instructions
Celebrate with a fun Brain Break afterward (check out this website for ideas https://family.gonoodle.com)
Additional resources to help support students may also include:
Hand "warm ups" (see attachment)
Use of sensory activities (see link to videos)
Positioning for writing (see link to videos)
Pencil supports (see link to videos)

Principal's Message 5/14/2020
Hello Shaver School Community,
You are all aware of the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on our world and communities. This has been very hard and challenging and I know each of you have been affected in different ways. We are thinking of you and are here to provide resources and support in any way we can. As you know, our economy has been greatly impacted and as a result, funding for schools is decreasing. We are facing the largest budget cuts we have ever had.
In order to minimize the impact on students and their quality education, we are having to take action now to make up for the shortfall for next school year. Hopefully, this will save us money and reduce cuts to staff or school days.
Please read the following communication from our superintendent explaining what we will be doing. Keep in mind that for the remainder of this school year teachers will continue to provide "Distance Learning". Students will have work assigned for them to do Monday-Friday. Your child’s education and social/emotional well being are of utmost importance to us. We will get through this together.
District Update from the Superintendent
May 12th, 2020
Dear Parkrose,
I am reaching out to our community today to share some important news regarding the rest of our school year. I am very sorry to share more unfortunate news to the Parkrose community regarding our services to students and families. We recognize that our larger community is experiencing many hardships and that includes the challenge of distance learning while trying to take care of your family during this unprecedented crisis. Our schools and statewide services will see significant reductions to their budgets for 20-21. Parkrose could see up to 4 million dollars in reductions for the next school year and that amounts to 10% of our current budget. This shortfall is so significant we must take steps now to help manage the deficit.
Our district has made the difficult decision to reduce the number of days of school this year in order to save money for the 20-21 school year. Our district will take steps this week to reduce most of our staffing up to 40% for the final four weeks of school. This action is taken to save funds to help mitigate the financial shortfall we face next school year. Our goal is to reduce the impact of the shortfall by saving now. We anticipate this will save teaching and staff positions and lessen the likelihood of reducing school days next year.
Beginning next week we will reduce our staff time to three days a week. Most of our staff will be partially laid off while maintaining benefits, and our organization will participate in Workshare, a federally funded program to help our organization keep everyone employed, but allow for them to collect partial unemployment through the CARES stimulus act. This program is an opportunity for us to save money now to prepare for what looks to be a significant shortfall for the 20-21 school year. Unfortunately, any shortfall we face can result in layoffs of staff and potential loss of school days to balance our budget.
We are with you in spirit and we will get through this together.
Our school and service schedule starting the week of May 18th will change as follows:
Elementary school students will have distance learning teacher support available to them Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday’s. Monday’s and Fridays our elementary teachers will be furloughed and not working.
Middle School and High School students will still have class on the same days that are currently scheduled. Our Secondary level teachers will share new office hours and will be taking furlough days during the week that don’t conflict with their class schedule. Students' schedules will remain the same.
Meal service will be Monday, Tuesday (double meal on Tues.), Thursday, Friday. We will not have meals delivered on Wednesday’s, but will provide a double meal to families on Tuesday’s.
District support and administration will be furloughed on Friday’s through July 25th.
We will know more specifics regarding our financial shortall in the coming weeks. Next week the state revenue forecast will share the overall loss of revenue over the past two months. Then our Governor will work with the legislature to determine how they may help mitigate the statewide deficit.
We will do our very best to continue to provide service and support to all of you. I wish we weren’t facing such difficult financial times. This reduction of hours for staff is to do our best to help us from potentially making deep cuts to our budget next year.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at questions@parkrose.k12.or.us or leave a voice message at 503-408-2100.
Kind regards,
Michael Lopes Serrao
Superintendent
Parkrose School District

Occupational Therapists Message
Fine motor skills involve small muscles that control the hand, fingers, and thumb and are used in our everyday lives to perform important tasks, for example, using a fork, buttoning and zipping clothes, writing, drawing, keyboarding and more. The ability to complete these everyday tasks is important at school, home and in the community.
Fine motor skills begin to develop and improve as we move from infancy to childhood and into our teen years. Some children may struggle with performing tasks that use fine motor skills and may become frustrated and upset when they aren’t successful. For example, a student may have a hard time handling scissors and cutting along a line or holding a pencil to write. The student’s frustration with the task may lead them to avoid cutting or writing exercises which has an impact on their success at school.
Practice can help to build fine motor skills, especially if the activities are fun, and can help move student’s past avoidance and to active engagement. Below are examples of fine motor activities. The challenge for this week of distance learning is to have your child choose three or more fine motor tasks to complete. Afterward have them make a list of what they chose and write down answers to the following questions:
Which activity was the most fun and why?
How long did you do each task?
Is there an activity that you didn’t do that you would like to try? Which one is it?
Have fun!
Fine Motor Coordination Activities
Origami- start simple and work up to more complex projects
Board games- Jenga, checkers, mancala and Chutes and Ladders
Video games- individually or with others
Building- legos and other toys with small pieces
Art projects- drawing, writing, scribbling, doodling, coloring,
Art projects- that involve cutting, like making paper snowflakes
Paint- use a piece of butcher paper and go BIG!
Molding clay- make a homemade batch, choose a theme, for example, a village, a sports team, an animal farm
Puzzle- set up a table with a puzzle on it
Write- thank-you or gratitude cards, letters to friends or family
Bake- knead bread, stir cake batter, spoon out cookie dough
Peg board games- wooden tic-tac-toe and Mind Magic or Battleship
Speed games- time challenges; type words at the computer keyboard, separate and place colored chocolate candies (like M&Ms) into different jars

Teacher and staff appreciation week!
This Week is Teacher Appreciation week and we want to celebrate our teachers and all our staff! They are truly an amazing team of educators working together to provide the best education possible for Shaver students. Even though students are not in school, they are still doing so much to keep students learning from home. All of our staff go above and beyond in teaching, guiding and caring for students. We are sad we can not be at school together to show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate them, but please let them know through email, text, dojo, google classroom or any way you can. They would love to hear from you and our students! A huge thank you to our incredible team at Shaver School!
Learning with iReady
We hope your child is engaging in iready reading and math on-line learning. They have done this at school so they are familiar with it. This is one of our main learning platforms and teachers can check student progress and engagement. Please encourage your child to do iready math and reading. Teachers have reached out to support you and your child in accessing this and other learning. Please let them know how they can support you.
Make sure to continue to practice math and reading on iReady! Students can click on the link to see what lessons your teacher has planned for you.

Occupational Therapist Message
Hello parents and students out there! My name is Heather Block. My colleague, Patricia Perez, and I provide Occupational Therapy to qualified students within the Parkrose School District. During the school closure we will periodically share resources here that all students and families can use to help build a variety of school skills.
Today's resource focuses on emotional regulation and strength. Emotional regulation is a person’s ability to effectively manage and respond to an emotional experience. When our body and mind are focused we are ready to learn! During the school closure Lynea and Jim Gillen of Yoga Calm have offered free classes that help support emotional regulation and strength. The classes are every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Lynea and Jim are wonderful teachers and their granddaughter Anna even helps lead classes on occasion! We highly recommend yoga as a tool for learning and hope your student will be able to participate.
Kids Yoga: Tues/Thurs: 10:00 - 10:45 am (PDT)

Hello Shaver School Community,
I miss being at Shaver school and seeing students and families each day. We are so sad that students can not be at school learning, growing, and having fun together. Even though we can not be together in person, we want to stay connected to you and support you in any way we can during this challenging time.
It was great to see so many of you here at Shaver last Friday when you came to pick up the math workbooks, reading packets and other materials teachers put together for students. We were so glad that most of you were able to make it!
Our teachers have been reaching out to you to provide a variety of learning opportunities for students. All teachers have provided the following:
Google Classrooms for students to join. This is a learning platform they are using to post weekly work and to communicate with students.
iready reading and math for students to do on-line learning.
Standards based Reading and Math packets - We sent Reading and math packets to you in the mail at the beginning of April and then we just gave out the next reading packet at our materials pick up last Friday.
Grade level Math workbooks.
Some are doing Zoom classes and meetings. This is a way for a group of people to meet virtually.
We hope you can support and encourage your child to engage in learning. Teachers are here to help in any way they can and want to communicate with you.
While we are providing all these different learning opportunities, we understand that each of you has different situations and are doing what works best for your family.
The following resources are available to students and families:
Free breakfast and lunch pick up Monday-Friday from 11:00-1:00 at Shaver school.
Food Pantry at Parkrose Middle School every Thursday from 3:30-5:30.
Health Clinic at Parkrose High School
Counselor's Message
Greetings, Shaver Families! It was six weeks ago today that the state decided to shut school buildings, and we believed it was for an “extended Spring Break.” Of course now that has all changed, and our buildings are closed for the rest of this school year. Some of you might be thinking that six weeks should be plenty of time to get this whole new thing figured out, but it’s not! There are frequent changes in our understanding of the disease we are fighting, frequent changes in our community responses and frequent changes in what schools are doing. With all that change, no wonder we still feel a little lost. It’s OK. It’s also OK if you are feeling angry, stressed, frustrated or scared. A lot is being asked of parents right now, and I believe we are all doing the best we can. Take a moment to breath, stop and drink a glass of water or look at pictures on your phone that make you smile. Remember that we are here for you. You can reach me by text or call at 503-897-8221, or email at readchr@parkrose.k12.or.us. I would love to hear from you or your students!
