Message From the Principal

Hello Westridge,

I hope everyone enjoys some time together next week to celebrate Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Day. The PTSO has been working with the school to put together this 'tree of thanks' with each student filling out a leaf with what they're grateful for. I took pictures of a few of my favorites here. There's a lot of positive energy coming from this tree!

Have a great weekend everyone,

Noah

Parenting in a Digital Age Internet risks for youth and suicide prevention awareness for parents

Are you a parent of a teen or pre-teen? Does your child have a smart phone and internet access outside of your supervision? Did you know there are apps your child can download to hide their online activity from your view? Do you confidently know the state of your child’s mental health and emotional well-being?

There are many tough questions facing parents today and it’s difficult to have all the answers with the ever-changing risks confronting our kids. With screen time on the rise, the reality of your child engaging in dangerous online activity is very real; everything from inappropriate online relationships, sexting scams, to venturing into the dark web- there are many real dangers parents need to be aware of. The social pressures facing our kids in school and online are constant- in a world of social media influencers and cyber bullying, it’s never been more important to intentionally check-in on your child’s mental health and well-being.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to share a 90-minute presentation to address some of these big issues and the associated risks. One of our School Resource Officers and Crime Prevention Specialists will discuss current trends and data from crimes connected to youth in our area- sharing what you need to know to stay ahead and prepare your kids to make smart decisions online. Additionally, Clackamas County’s Suicide Prevention Coordinator will share some risk factors associated with youth suicide, how to have a conversation with someone who is struggling, what resources are available to you and your family for support and how to get involved. Also hear unique perspectives from a local mom who nearly lost her teen son to a suicide attempt- the signs of depression that no one could see from a successful and popular kid.

Please join us for this important conversation as we explore what we as parents can do to help our kids navigate to a healthy future.

December SEL theme: Empathy

Dear Westridge Families,

During December, through our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, we will be introducing the character trait of Empathy. Empathy is an important skill for creating connected and kind communities and developing healthy relationships. There is a growing need for more Empathy in our world. As anxiety increases in our culture, Empathy decreases. As more hate speech incidents occur in the world, as people use empathy less, we begin to see a divided and fractured community and world.

So, we are working to develop a few key skills in order to live more empathetic lives. As a school community, we will be examining how Empathy looks, sounds, and feels. First, developing an “emotional vocabulary” to make sure we have the words to understand and describe what we are feeling personally. Second, being able to connect with others based on their feelings, even though we may not have the exact same story or perspective as someone else. Finally, we will think about how being an upstander when empathy is not being used can help support our community members and stop harmful actions.

The definition students will be learning this month for empathy is: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another.

For your reference, here are links for extension activities if you would like to explore empathy further as a family:

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form

Each school year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure that every child is on track and achieving learning goals.

State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.

If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).
