WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE DEN
IB Learner Profile in Action at The Bushnell
Our World Theatre and Music students recently put the IB Learner Profile into action during a behind-the-scenes visit to The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford. As inquirers, students asked thoughtful questions about lighting, sound, set design, and the many careers that support live performances. They demonstrated being knowledgeable by connecting classroom learning to real-world theatre and music production.
Students were also open-minded as they learned about the rich history of The Bushnell and its important role in the arts. Seeing backstage spaces that most audience members never experience—from technical areas to behind-the-curtain pathways—made the visit especially meaningful. As reflective learners, students considered how collaboration, creativity, and tradition come together to create powerful performances. We are grateful to The Bushnell team for providing such a unique and inspiring learning opportunity!
Our artists are getting hands-on and creative in art class!
Students explored texture and dimension by using hot glue and acrylic paint to create bold, tactile works of art. By layering lines, patterns, and shapes with glue, then bringing them to life with paint, students experimented with how texture can change the way art is seen and felt.
This process encouraged creativity, risk-taking, and problem-solving as students transformed simple materials into unique, expressive pieces. We love seeing our artists push boundaries and turn ideas into textured masterpieces!
Congratulations to Our Newest NHS & NJHS Members!
We are proud to celebrate our newest inductees into the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)! These students have demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character, and their dedication to excellence truly reflects our school values. We applaud their hard work and commitment and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will continue to make within our school and community. Congratulations on this well-earned achievement!
Save the Life Tour Experience
IB US History: Bringing the Roaring Twenties to Life
Our 9th Grade IB US History students traveled back in time as they stepped into the shoes of the influential figures who defined the Roaring Twenties. Through an engaging role-play and networking activity, students interviewed one another while portraying historical icons to better understand the diverse perspectives, challenges, and contributions of the era. This inquiry-based experience encouraged students to think critically, communicate effectively, and develop historical empathy—key elements of IB learning. Ask your child which figure they portrayed!
Our star-studded lineup included:
The Trailblazers: Amelia Earhart and Ruth Muskrat Bronson
The Cultural Icons: Charlie Chaplin, Hattie McDaniel, and Zora Neale Hurston
The Change Makers: Marcus Garvey, Duke Ellington, and artist Eitaro Ishigake
The Notorious: Al Capone
Through this interactive lesson, IB learners deepened their understanding of the Roaring Twenties while strengthening their skills as inquirers, communicators, and thinkers.
December RECAP
IB LEARNER
January - Open-Minded
To start the new year off right, the IB learner profile trait for January is open-minded. As open-minded lifelong learners, we critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
To encourage open-mindedness in your students, here are a few suggestions. Happy new year!
Encourage students to try new things – new foods, new games and new activities.
Expose students to different festivals, celebrations and traditions and be sure to present them in a non-judgmental way.
Encourage students to really listen to others when they speak.
Introduce literature about many different cultures into your home library. Be sure that it is appropriate and reflects the culture in an appropriate way.
Introduce students to other countries, cultures, global issues, and perspectives.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Attendance Matters ALL YEAR LONG!
- The school day is from 7:30-2:05.
- Scholars missing school for 3 cores or more will be considered absent for the day.
- Absences for more than 20 minutes from a class is considered an absence. Time will be noted in PowerSchool.
- Attendance matters for all classes so if a scholar can only attend 1 or 2 cores for an excused reason, we highly recommend they do.
Scholars absent more than 10% of the school year (18 days) are considered CHRONICALLY ABSENT by the State. The first 9 absences are excused with parent communication to the school. Ten and over will require specific documentation for reasons listed in the handbook (located on our website).
Scholars are allowed 2 mental health days that have to be reported as such when reporting the scholar's absence. These absences are in addition to the 9 excused by the State.
High School Scholars: Loss of credit for a class can occur after 12 absences (Half Year Courses) or 24 absences (Full Year Courses). Please contact your Counselor to discuss how credit can be recovered.
Please remind your child of the importance of waking up early and being in school daily. If you need support and resources please contact Ms. Gibson at sgibson@crec.org or their school counselor (listed below).
