Our Lady of Good Counsel School
Term 3 Week 5 Newsletter

A Prayer of Thanksgiving
Loving God,
We come before you with grateful hearts, thankful for the many gifts and talents you have given to the children of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
Over these past few weeks, we have watched with pride as our students have shone on stage through assemblies, showcases and the Catholic Performing Arts Festival - singing, dancing, acting, and creating with joy and confidence. In every performance, we have seen your light shining through them.
Lord, we thank you for the courage it takes to stand before others and share a gift. We thank you for the teachers who nurture these talents, the families who support and encourage, and the community that gathers to celebrate.
Help our children to always remember that every talent, great or small, is a gift from you, given not to be hidden but to be shared for the good of others and for your glory.
May our students continue to grow in confidence and creativity, using their gifts to bring joy to those around them, just as Mary said yes to the gifts God gave her.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
NEWS FROM MRS McCLUE
Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that we are halfway through Term 3 already! Although, with the amount of events and achievements summarised below, it is also no wonder we are all tired. As you browse this newsletter, I am sure that you will celebrate our wonderful school and students with me. OLGC is certainly a great place to be!
NAPLAN 2026
We are delighted to share the outstanding NAPLAN results achieved by our students this year. Our school performed above the State mean in all areas, reflecting the commitment, hard work and growth of our students and staff.
These results are particularly pleasing because they are the result of a consistent, whole-school approach to improvement over the past three years. Literacy has been a key focus of our School Improvement Plan, with significant investment in strengthening the teaching of reading and writing across every year level.
As part of this work, we introduced Sounds-Write across the school to provide a consistent, evidence-based approach to phonics and spelling, alongside Talk for Writing, which has strengthened students' oral language, vocabulary, writing and understanding of text. These approaches have become embedded in our daily classroom practice and provide students with a strong foundation for literacy success.
We have also placed an increasing emphasis on numeracy. Since the beginning of 2025, we have had a particular focus on strengthening numeracy teaching and learning in the Early Years, with this focus extending across the whole school in 2026. The results we are seeing demonstrate the positive impact of this deliberate and sustained approach.
What is especially encouraging is that our students' results have bucked broader national trends, demonstrating strong achievement and growth across a range of areas. While NAPLAN is only one measure of student learning, these results provide valuable affirmation that the strategies we have implemented are making a meaningful difference.
We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful to our dedicated teachers for their expertise, collaboration and commitment to continually improving the learning experiences we provide. Most importantly, these results reinforce our belief that when we have a clear whole-school focus, consistent approaches and high expectations for every learner, our students thrive.

Agreed changes from 2027
After considerable feedback from parents regarding the practicality of keeping white sports shoes clean, from 2027 students will be able to wear either white or black sports shoes. This transition year will allow families to continue to use the sports shoes they may have purchased this year, to save on additional costs. From 2028, black sports shoes will be the required standard and expectation for all students in PP-Y6.
CEWA Term Dates 2027
Parents are reminded that the three-week mid-year break will commence for students in 2027. CEWA Term Dates for 2027 are as follows:
Term 1
Thursday 28 January to Friday 9 April 2027
Term 2
Tuesday 27 April to Friday 25 June 2027
Term 3
Monday 19 July to Friday 24 September 2027
Term 4
Monday 11 October to Friday 10 December
Please note: OLGC is still finalising their 2027 school calendar and the pupil free days have not yet been determined. The above dates do not factor in the possibility of a scheduled Pupil Free Day at either end of the school term.
With so many more events to come this term, including our Athletics Carnival and Fathers Day celebrations, we are bound to enjoy lots more opportunities to come together as a school community. I look forward to seeing many of our families as the term progresses.
Warm regards,
Lisa
Spirit of the Arts Festival
Catholic Performing Arts Festival - Music
Congratulations to all students who have participated so far in the 2026 Spirit of the Arts Catholic Performing Arts Festival. The festival commenced at the end of July and will conclude with the Finale Concert on 15 September at Newman College.
Both the Beginner and Continuing Ensembles received an Excellence Award for their performances at Orana Catholic Primary School on 31 July. Many students from both ensembles also participated in the inaugural Instrumental Showcase held the previous day, providing an excellent opportunity to prepare for both their ensemble performances and instrumental solos.
This year, OLGC entered a record number of solo entries in the festival, with many students receiving Outstanding and Excellent adjudication comments. On 12 August, the string solos were held at Aquinas College, while the woodwind solos took place at Good Shepherd Primary School. Piano solos were held at Zenith Music on 30 July.
The soloists representing OLGC this year with the award they received were:

All students should be incredibly proud of their achievements. Performing before an audience takes courage and every student who represented themselves and our school with confidence and commitment. I am extremely proud of each and every one of you.
This could not have been achieved without the dedication and direction of our wonderful instrumental tutors. Thank you to Virginia Benedetti, Juliana Murray, Ryan Popovic and Ella Wyard. Thank you also to all parents and families for their support throughout the festival, particularly those who assisted with transporting students to their solo performances.
A special thank you also goes to the Mulholland family for transporting the ensembles to and from their performances. I would also like to acknowledge Isabella Hemelaar in Year 5 for her wonderful piano accompaniment of the Beginner Ensemble during their performance.
Later in the term, I will provide further feedback on the Choir’s performance, which is due to take place on 28 August at the Vasto Club, and any awards received for participation in the 2026 Spirit of the Arts Catholic Performing Arts Festival.

Class Excursions
Pre-Primary AQWA
In Week 1 the Pre Primaries went on their first excursion to AQWA. They were very excited to travel on the bus and explore the aquarium. The children are in the process of writing their own recounts to share their experience.
Year 1 & Year 3 Kalamunda History Village
The Year 1 and Year 3 students recently enjoyed an excursion to Kalamunda History Village, where they had the opportunity to step back in time and experience what life was like in the olden days. Students tried washing clothes by hand, manually sorting apples and taking part in a traditional classroom lesson with a very strict teacher. They also practised writing on slate boards and even experienced what it was like to receive the cane when they were “naughty”!
Year 4 Shipwreck Gallery - Fremantle
On Monday 17 August, Year 4 visited the Shipwreck Gallery and Maritime Museum as part of our Age of Exploration learning. Students discovered fascinating stories about early voyages and explored how Australia was discovered and mapped by European explorers.
The day began with a facilitated presentation, where students learned about life at sea, exploration and some of the shipwrecks that form part of Australia’s history. Students, in groups, then had the opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibits using their Captain’s Log, putting their learning into action as they investigated artefacts and displays throughout the galleries.
There was plenty to discover, with some exhibits fascinating and others a little scary! It was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real historical artefacts and experiences.
NAIDOC Week at OLGC
This year's national NAIDOC Week theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marked fifty years of celebrating the history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples.
Week 3 began with a prayer assembly led by our Spiritual Ministry students, who shared a co created prayer for our First Nations peoples. Throughout the term, First Nations perspectives have been authentically embedded in classroom learning, and our students came together at an intimate assembly to share what they have discovered.
- Pre Kindy shared First Nations stories with us.
- Kindy learnt about the three colours of the Aboriginal flag, creating handprints to decorate a snake.
- Pre Primary shared artwork inspired by First Nations stories, along with a First Nations dance they learnt from Dance with Tom on ABC Kids.
- Year 1 explored the importance of storytelling and how lessons are passed down through generations, and shared their own rainbow serpents.
- Year 2 learnt about Djilba, the current Noongar season, created imprints of leaves, sticks and flowers found during this season, and joined an online excursion with the National Portrait Gallery.
- Year 3 shared traditional First Nations stories and the key life lessons within them that we can carry into our daily life at OLGC.
- Year 4 performed a song teaching us about the six Noongar seasons.
- Year 5 and 6 collaborated on a reimagined recreation of the NAIDOC Week artwork.
It was a joyful morning of listening, learning and celebrating together, and a beautiful reminder of what it means to walk in faith and learn with love on Whadjuk Noongar country.
STEM
CEWA STEM Showcase
Seeds of Science Day a Blooming Success!
Tuesday's Seeds of Science Day was a wonderful celebration of curiosity and creativity across the whole school. The day kicked off with our Seeds of Science Parade on the Courts, where students and staff dressed up as scientists, plants, planets and animals in true National Science Week spirit. Throughout the day, students rotated through hands-on STEM activities, including making their very own plantable seed paper. Congratulations to our Seeds of Science Competition winners, Zoe D., Micah and Lilah, whose entries were announced at the parade. Thank you to Sammy Preston, our staff and the Environmental Ministry Leaders for making the day such a success!
Science Week Superstars: A Huge Thank You to Our Parent Volunteers!
A huge shout-out and thank you to our inspiring parent volunteers who generously gave their time during Science Week to share their scientific knowledge and expertise with our students, or to lend a hand during our science lessons.
We were incredibly lucky to welcome a pilot, a professor, a marine scientist and an engineer, giving our students the opportunity to discover just how diverse and exciting the world of STEM can be!
Some highlights included learning how aeroplanes fly and the important safety checks completed before take-off, exploring water purification and how water can be treated and reused, investigating marine life and discovering whether different shells and sea creatures are “friend or foe,” and finding out what engineers actually do and how they use science and problem-solving in the real world.
Most impressive of all were our students. The curiosity, enthusiasm and quality of the questions they asked throughout the sessions were wonderful to see and made me incredibly proud.
A heartfelt thank you to our parent volunteers for helping bring science to life for our students and making our Science Week celebrations even more memorable!

Maths on the Move
What a Morning!
On Wednesday 6 August, our school community came together for our very first Maths on the Move morning - and what a special event it was! Over 120 parents, grandparents, and family members joined our Kindy to Year 2 students for a hands-on maths adventure, rotating through our early years classrooms and exploring a rich range of mathematical activities together. We were also delighted to welcome senior friends from our Karrinyup-Innaloo Parish, who accompanied students with the most beautiful warmth and care. A huge thank you to CEWA Maths Consultant Jenny Jongste for her wonderful keynote presentation, to our incredible K-2 team for their vision and hard work in bringing this event to life, and to every family who came along and made the morning so memorable. The joy on our children's faces said it all - maths truly is everywhere!
100 Days of School Celebrations
Pre-Primary
On the 28th of July Pre Primary were officially, 100 Days Brighter! Their day was filled with all things 100. Counting, dropping, hopping, bouncing, building 100 times! They couldn't believe it when they added the last counter to their tens frame.
Year 1
On Tuesday 27th July, our Year 1 students had a fantastic time celebrating 100 Days of School! It was a fun-filled day with lots of exciting activities based around the number 100. Students made their own colourful 100 Days glasses, completed special 100 Days colouring sheets, decorated and enjoyed delicious 100 Days biscuits, and took on an energetic 100 Days exercise challenge. They also had fun exploring and counting with 100 Days object cards.
It was wonderful to celebrate how much our Year 1 students have learnt, grown and achieved during their first 100 days of school. We are so proud of them and can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
Year 2
On Tuesday, July 28th the Year 2s celebrated 100 Magical Days of Year 2! Wizards, fairies and mythical creatures alike experienced a fun-filled day focusing on the number 100. We created artwork inspired by the number 100, completed 100 exercises and let our competitive side loose as we battled against each other in 100 second challenges. It has been such a privilege to walk alongside these beautiful children in their education journey this year, and I can't wait to see the growth they make in our remaining time together.
Kindy Corner
Our Kindy children have been diving deep into their inquiry learning and have decided they want to learn all about crabs, rockpools, giant squid and The Mariana Trench! Through lots of rich discussions and shared research, we have been discovering some amazing facts!
THINQERS
Our THINQERS students have hit the ground running this term with a full slate of challenges on the go.
Our Year 3 to 5 mathematicians have commenced the second round of the Have Sum Fun Online Maths Competition, working in teams against the clock to solve problems that stretch well beyond the classroom.
Tournament of Minds is now underway, with our Year 5/6 team having received their challenge and already brainstorming some wonderfully creative and outside the box solutions. It is a busy few weeks ahead as they refine their ideas and prepare for presentation day.
Not to be outdone, our Year 4 students have taken on the role of Mini Detectives. Mirroring the Law Society of WA's Cluedunnit Kids challenge undertaken by Year 5/6, they are investigating a fictional crime of their own and devising creative solutions to crack the case.
We are so proud of the curiosity, collaboration and clever thinking on display.
Congratulations
It's a BOY!
Congratulations, Ella! 🖤💛
Good In-Tent
On July 18 2026 I slept outside in a tent to raise money for Mission Australia. They provide food packs, temporary and permanent shelter for the homeless, clothing, crisis support and more.
My parents helped me borrow a tent, make a fund-raising page, asking people to sponsor me, and just making the night possible. We called our team ‘Good In-Tent’. We set up a sleep out in our courtyard and my cousins came to join me as well, we had tonnes of fun.
A few days after, we checked the fund raising page and we had raised $1, 975!!!
I'm really passionate about raising awareness for the homeless as I strongly believe that everyone should have a safe place to live and call home. On any given night, more than 122,000 Australians, including over 17,500 children under 12, don't have a safe space to call home.
I know that taking part in a sleep out for one night, doesn't compare to anything people experiencing homelessness goes through. But I would like to thank the people who sponsored and supported me. Including my year 6 classmates, and OLGC community. Because every bit counts, and makes a difference.
How can you raise your voice to help the homeless?

Play Space Update: Plans, Pipes and a Big Thank You
Thank to the families who have responded to our recent callout for help transforming our outdoor play spaces.
Behind the scenes, we are working through the planning stages - mapping out exactly what we want to build, where it will go and what materials we need - so that when we do call our volunteers together for a working bee, we can make the most of everyone's time and skills. We will be in touch with confirmed dates and details once that planning is in place.
In the meantime, we have a specific materials request that we hope someone in our community might be able to help with.
Our early childhood children have shown a strong interest in pipes, tubes, connectors and construction - the kind of open-ended play where children design, build and problem-solve with real materials. We would love to create a dedicated loose parts pipe play station in our Early Childhood space, and to do that we are looking for donations of:
- PVC pipes and offcuts (various sizes)
- Pipe connectors, elbows and joiners
- End caps, T-pieces and any other fittings
- Anything that screws, clips or connects together that children can use to build, design and explore
If you work in the plumbing industry, have a family member or contact who does, or simply have offcuts sitting in a shed at home that are no longer needed, we would love to hear from you. Safe, clean materials only - but no need for them to be new.
These kinds of resources are enormously valuable for young children's learning - they support engineering thinking, spatial reasoning, collaboration and sustained creative play in a way that very few other materials can.
