  • Driver's Ed is offered at Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt High Schools.
  • Students are not required to hold their Instruction permit before class. However, it's suggested that they make an appointment at the DMV and get their permit ahead of the class or shortly after completing the In Classroom portion of the course so students can practice driving with a parent/legal guardian and apply their learning right away!
  • Once the student has their Instructional permit and they complete the course, including the Behind the Wheel portion, drive and hold onto the certificate until the 180 days have passed. Then take the certificate to the DMV to get their Restricted permit.
  • Driver's Ed certificates will be stamped, signed and dated upon successful completion of the written test in the classroom and the successful completion of the driving test behind the wheel. Students have 1 year from the date on the certificate for the written portion to obtain their Learner's Permit and 1 year from the date on the certificate for the driving portion to obtain their Restricted Permit from the DMV.
Email Notification & Course Registration SIGN UP HERE!
Registration is 1st open to current high school students & then current 8th graders a week later. Summer- 8th graders are not considered freshmen & 12th graders are not eligible to register the summer after their senior year.

Our Program

Are you confused about how to take driver's education? Community Education offers state-certified Driver's Education for teens. Our state approved driver's education program meets the following minimum requirements:

  • 30 hours of classroom instruction
  • Six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and six hours of observation.
  • A certified instructor with a driver's education endorsement provides the instruction.

Our program includes both the in classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel. The behind-the-wheel component will begin 1-60 days after the in classroom component. Each student will have scheduled driving times which will vary but on average this is completed in 3-4 days (i.e. 3 hours each day for 4 days).

Teen Driving Laws

Effective July 1, 2021

The changes to teen driver permits and rules brought about by 2020 Senate Bill 113 are currently suspended by Governor Noem until June 30, 2021. Please review this information carefully and note it will apply to both existing and new learner’s and restricted permit applicants starting July 1, 2021. There is no “grandfathering,” so this applies to all unless they have already upgraded to an unrestricted adult driver’s license.
