Principal Points

Dear Grown ups,

With the start of October we will be completing our Amira Testing (formally known as Istation) for our kindergarten through 3rd grade students. Please try to focus on a nice bath and good nights sleep with a hearty breakfast to help them be their best. Every little bit helps!!

SAFETY REMINDER: students are NOT supervised until 7:45am. We do not have enough staff to monitor them any earlier so PLEASE keep this in mind for safety purposes in the morning. I realize many of you need to get to work but I am a huge advocate for your childrens safety and wanted you to be clear that they are NOT supervised before 7:45am in case something would happen to them (skinned knee, concussion, etc).

Students are encouraged to "STOP and HOP" out of their parents vehicle as soon as the vehicle stops to keep the line rolling! Please do not wait until you are at the front of the line to drop off!!! This slows down the flow and drop off line system. They can "stop and hop' out anywhere along the sidewalk!

Parents parking and picking up students in person must do so AT THE FLAGPOLE by the front entrance. Please do not attempt to pick up else where. This is your designated spot and you will be asked to go to the flagpole.

Please keep in mind as the fall weather rolls in to send your child with a sweatshirt or jacket (when it gets even colder) to help them stay warm. Pants, socks and shoes (rather than sandals and shorts) is important part of being both warm and responsible each day. It really helps to dress in layers on these cool morning and warm afternoon days. Thank you so much for your help with this.

BE SURE TO LABEL ALL CLOTHING so if it is found it can find its way back to the owner rather than abandoned in the lost and found!!! If your students are missing any items please stop in to see if your student has anything in the lost in found. It will be out at P/T Conferences also!

The first week in October we will be celebrating the "Principal's Peak Performers" for the month of September. One student from each grade will be showcased on their exhibition of following the CLIMB philosophy and showing academic growth, citizenship and positive attendance/promptness to school. I will be buying some pizza to share with the Peak Performers and talking with those students. They will also get showcased in our lobby and recognized on the PA in addition to recieving a certificate. This is a big honor and well deserved for those selected so if one of your students gets selected please recognize thier accomplishments and hardwork of CLIMBing toward the summit of success.

Please remember you cannot get to JMS from Summit and are not able to cut throught the Summit Springs Apartment complex either. You have two options:

-Drive your student to JMS via the specified route of Lincoln to 8th Ave to Birch!!

(only left turns on 10th)

OR

-Drop off your JMS student at Summit and let them walk! This saves you time and allows your

JMS student to be responsible! Walking is a great thing!

Sincerely,

Amber Boone

We need your help!

The TWO VERY BEST things you can do with your student is:

  • READ TO/WITH them every single day!
  1. From babies on....read, read, read!!!
  2. This increases their vocabulary base at a time when students brain's are growing the fastest!
  3. Also, talking to them using and explaining adult words is very beneficial.

  • PRACTICE MATH FACTS (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  1. Practice them daily!
  2. These foundational skills need to become immediate and easy to recall!
  3. Have your student count to/with you.
  4. Count anything, make up problems, flashcards, etc, measure, challenge and practice some more.

  • PLEASE encourage children to work independently!
  1. They should be able to tie thier own shoes, get dressed, clean up after themselves and so on!
  2. These are life skills they must learn.
  3. Let them try and practice, practice practice by doing it themselves as well as helping with chores.
  4. Studnets need to learn that if they are persistent when frustrated they will be succeessful with practice.

  • PLEASE encourage your student to engage and participate in school!
  1. Be on time and stay all day!
  2. Reinforce following school behavior academic, and attendance expectations.
  3. This is the student(s) job please encourage doing it well.

#1 Goal: Academics

One of our student goals is to increase academic performance by 20% or more as we move towards getting all students to profienct levels for their grade level.

Focus will be placed on teaching bell to bell with science-based, district curricula.

  • Please be on time to school to learn
  • Avoid early student pick ups
  • Students should get a good nights sleep free of electronics and other distractions.

Students will be held to high expectaitons as we monitor thier progress closely.

  • Parents now have access to PowerSchool (must be parent activated)

Focus will be placed on academics first and foremost as we understnad the importance of student learning.

  • Class parties or other disrupting events during the school day will not be allowed.

Staff will be assessing student growth in learning using common formative assessments as NWEA/Map testing for pre, mid and post assessment of academic skill.

  • Students work on assessments weekly
  • Students are encouraged and expected to do their best in school
  • Encourage students to complete all assignments and any homework they may have.

Staff will closely analyze student data to teach and reteach essential standards to students to ensure learning is taking place.

  • Staff meets weekly to analyze date
  • Staff drills down into student data and plan interventions on academic holes in learning when they arise while always teahing to essential standards

Goal #2 Behaviors

If students are distracted in class by unexpected behaviors they have difficulty learning.

  • Students are held to high expectations
  • Student disruptions are not allowed and will have consequences
  • Students are expected to follow all building expectations

We are committed to addressing unwanted behaviors swiftly to ensure learning can take place in the classroom for other students as well as keeping everyone safe.

Our goal is to keep students in the classrooms to learn by implementing multiple tier 1 interventions and strategies but if a student fails to comply we have multiple avenues to try for tier 2 and 3 interventions and strategies to help disruptive students find success.

Students will be expected to complete assisgnments missed due to unwanted behaviors after they return to the classroom. Sometimes that means they will need to finish missed work during free periods such as recess.

Goal #3 School Culture

We love teaching your students and are honored to be providing them with a rigorous, scienced based curriculum that creates a culture of learning. We feel it is important to crete an inclusive community that works together. We value all our stakeholders (student, teachers and community members) and look forward to supporting each other as we move students onward and upward in their academic experience.

We are implementing multiple systems to help students be success with learning, behaviors and attendance. We are striving for consistent actions with our systems making Summit the best it can be.

School culture is not just what we do everyday as a team but who we are as a team! The Summit team also follows a CLIMB philophy to keep us all moving in the same direction with the same rigorous expectations.

The SINGLE BEST way to help your student be successful is READ with them or have them read to you EVERY SINGLE NIGHT!

Also please ensure THEY COMPLETE their homework and be sure they are getting a solid nights sleep free of electronics so they can attend school every single day!

Goal #4 School Attendance Information

Attending school on time everyday is essential for your student's success!

Student's cannot learn if they are not in school!! Please try to schedule appointments during school breaks or after school whenever possible.

Plese note that it is Idaho State law that students must attend school and miss no more than 10% of days that school is in session.

8:10am SCHOOL STARTS - Students need to be at school and IN THEIR SEATS by 8:10 to be considered on time and present.

8:15 am is the TARDY BELL-If you arrive at 8:15 or later you will be marked tardy. three tardies equal 1 absence. Please arrive to school on time!!!

Dismissal is at 3:05 for walkers and pick-ups and 3:10pm for bus riders. The office is unavailable by telephone after 2:30 as we are helping students, staff and parents face to face. If you need to call the ofice please plan ahead and do so before 2:30pm.
