A Note from the Principal

Forest Hills Families,

October was a great month at Forest Hills. Most recently we celebrated Corn Day! Dady’s Roasted Corn is a family-owned company. Janice Dady and her husband have been sharing their roasted corn with schools across Alabama and the south for years. They obviously enjoy seeing the kids, and adults, enjoying their yummy snack, but they try to incorporate a little education about corn as well. The Florence City Child Nutrition Program makes this event possible for Forest Hills students, and we look forward to this day each year!

As we look forward to the events of November, patriotism is on the forefront of our minds. Loyalty is our virtue of the month. We look forward to teaching students about ways to honor their country while learning about this virtue. During the first week of November, students will learn about the presidential election, voting rights, and watch our very own 5th graders present their student council campaign speeches. On Thursday, November 7th, we will send off 11 Forest Hills Olympians to the Special Olympics! Our students will host a special send-off for our Olympians Thursday morning! On Friday, November 8th at 7:45 am we will host our annual Veterans Day Program in the gym. Any veterans of FHES students are welcome and will be served a complimentary breakfast! Students are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue or patriotic attire. Seating will be limited during this event.

We have 2 very exciting projects coming to fruition thanks to the support of our school district and PTO! The new library furniture is set to arrive at the beginning of November. This furniture is designed to be more flexible and kid/adult friendly. You've also probably noticed a major project going on at the 3rd/4th/5th playground. This playground overhaul includes new swings & new edging (paid for by our PTO) and a dirt work project (supported by our district) to prevent erosion. Not only will the erosion problem be corrected, but ampitheater multi-purpose seating has been designed into the retaining wall! Our students are eager to utilize this new area of our playground!

Finally, as we near the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to express my sincere appreciation and thankfulness to our Forest Hills students, teachers, staff, and families. I am truly thankful for each and every one of you--you are what makes this school so special! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

If I can ever be of assistance to you, please call, email, or stop by! GO FALCONS!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fowler, Principal

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is really enjoying learning about the Weather in our Reading Unit. Students have gotten to see & read about real tools like a weather vane, rain gauge & thermometer, & learn how they are used to measure weather. K students are really excited to begin reading CVC words now (consonant, vowel, consonant) and will begin spelling these words to write sentences. We will continue learning more letters, sounds and high frequency words each week. In math we are learning how to make combinations of 6-10, which is the beginning of adding. We will begin our unit on shapes (2D & 3D) at the end of this month. In our unit study this month we will learn about voting, America, Veteran's Day, & The First Thanksgiving.

1st Grade

First grade students are working so hard on mastering new phonics skills such as the inflectional ending -ed, digraph sounds, special vowel sounds, and more. In math, students have been challenged to solve both addition and subtraction word problems. We are now working on identifying true/false equations, teen numbers, and making a ten to add. Our character education focus for this month is loyalty. First graders will participate in conversations about how to honor their commitments and promises. We are looking forward to seeing how our students progress over the month of November.

2nd Grade

Second graders have been working extremely hard on their habitat shoe boxes. We are excited for the entire school to come down to the basement during the month of November, to see the many different kinds of habitats.

We are all geared up to start our new reading unit called, "My Community at Work". This is a great opportunity for students to learn about different careers, as well as, many different ways they can help in the community around them. In math, we will begin adding and subtracting THREE DIGIT NUMBERS!

We are so proud of these hard working second graders and we cannot wait to continue to see them grow. GO FALCONS!

3rd Grade

Thank you for a great October. The book character pumpkins have been a great addition to our hallway!! Thank you to those that participated in this fun activity. It is hard to believe that it is already November. This month students will be learning about A Changing Nation during our Reading unit. Students will discuss different ways change is demonstrated in our communities and how change teaches us about our past. In math students will be learning about Area. They will also continue practicing their multiplication and division facts. Please remember to study these at home with your child. Multiplication flash cards are a great way to study. Thank you for your continued support at home.

4th Grade

Fourth grade is “falling” into lots of new learning! In math, we are tackling difficult multiplication by learning how to multiply 1-digit numbers by 2, 3, and 4-digit numbers We are also learning how to multiply 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. Students are learning to apply the Open Area Model and Partial Product strategies. Division is coming soon... Please make sure your child knows their basic multiplication facts! Knowledge of basic facts is so important to the success of deeper math problem-solving. Practicing multiplication facts at home up to the 12s will be beneficial for your child.

In reading so far, we have learned about famous scientists Rube Goldberg, the Wright Brothers, and John Glenn. Next, we will close up our science unit with an autobiography about a trip into space! We are very excited to read new stories about our heritage and history in unit 3! Be looking out for your student’s informational writing piece….coming soon!

In the science lab, students are learning how energy connects all things around us. We have been experimenting with potential, kinetic, and solar energy. We are sparked up to move into electric circuits next!
Our famous Montgomery trip is this May. The first payment is due by December 2nd in order to reserve your spot. Go Falcons!

5th Grade

Our 5th Grade Reading classes have been busy learning in Unit 2 about all types of cycles in nature and how they impact our lives. These include monsoon cycles, ocean currents, and seasonal changes. Students have continued learning about suffixes and Greek and Latin Roots and how they help us determine the meaning of unknown words. We are continuing to develop our text dependent writing by incorporating our weekly vocabulary words into our written responses. In math, we are finishing up adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. Soon we will be moving in to our unit on fractions. Students should continue working on automaticity with their multiplication facts 0-10. In Science, we just finished learning about the phases of the moon. We will continue our study of space by looking at Earth's place in the universe. We will conduct experiments to prove that the Earth is spherical. We will also study sunlight, the pattern of shadows, and how shadows move throughout the day.
