Talking to Your Middle Schooler About Staying Drug-Free Talking to Your Middle Schooler About Staying Drug-Free

As we celebrate Red Ribbon Week (October 23–31), our school is focusing on empowering students to make healthy, safe, and drug-free choices. Middle school is a time of immense growth, curiosity, and peer pressure. Research shows that parents and guardians are the number one influence on a child’s decisions about alcohol and drugs.

Here are four practical, connection-first tips to help you start—and maintain—the conversation at home

  • Catch them in the moment. Avoid a heavy, formal sit-down lecture. Use everyday opportunities—like a scene in a TV show, a song lyric, or a news story—as a natural bridge to ask what they think about vaping, alcohol, or other drugs.

  • Ask open-ended questions. Instead of asking, "Did anyone offer you drugs today?" try asking, "What do kids at your school say about vaping?" or "How do you feel about how your friends handle pressure?" This keeps them talking rather than giving one-word answers.

  • Build an easy exit strategy. Help your student practice saying "no" ahead of time. Establish a "no-questions-asked" text code (like texting the letter "X") so they can secretly signal you to pick them up if they ever feel uncomfortable or pressured at a social gathering.

  • Focus on short-term impacts. Middle schoolers live in the present. Instead of focusing only on long-term health risks, remind them of how substance use immediately impacts things they care about—like their athletic performance, brain focus, skin, and personal goals.

By keeping the lines of communication open and judgment-free, you give your student the confidence to navigate tough choices and "Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free."
