Mary Hogan Family Newsletter

Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
March 14, 2025
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
What a week! We had a good and busy week at school including a third grade class play, a first grade exhibition of learning, Walk and Roll to School, S'mores parties, Everybody Wins Night, and the start of our VT CAP testing for 5th grade. There was even a lunar eclipse on early Friday morning to really get us excited about the night sky. It was also incredibly springlike most of the week - and muddy. I think we all are excited for spring!
Next week, we have an artist in residency with Burlington-based Jeh Kulu, who will bring West African drumming and dance to Mary Hogan. We will be drumming on Monday-Wednesday and then dancing on Thursday and Friday. Every class will see Jeh Kulu 3 times in the week, which is pretty sweet! Many, many thanks to the Vermont Arts Council, ACEEF, and Neat Repeats for helping to pay for much of the residency's cost!
💙, Jen

Student Council Is Having a Bake Sale!
We are having a bake sale at MESA's line dancing on 3/30. We will use the money we get to improve the GaGa pit on the playground. We hope you can help us raise money to do this by donating some treats or coming to bake with us after school on 3/28. If more students sign up to bake than we have space for, we will pick names randomly and let everyone know by 3/24, so be sure to sign up before then!
Thanks for your help to make Mary Hogan playground even better!

Principal's Challenge
Enjoy the hilarity that happened during the Principal's Challenge with the video below. Your children will LOVE laughing at their principals one more time!
3rd Grade Play
Students in Ms. Corrigan's class were really excited when they were studying Where We Are in Place and Time and some of them wrote a play to teach others about different types of dinosaurs. The students worked since late fall to write the script and get their classmates all involved. They performed today, demonstrating how well spoken they were, how hard they had worked, and what they learned. It was great!
1st Grade Exhibition
First grade classes are finishing up their units on animal adaptations and are working to share their learning with others. They wrote 2 books about animals - one fiction and one non-fiction. They also created dioramas of their animal in its natural habitat. They were such knowledgeable communicators, sharing what they learned with the community!
I Want S'more!
Classes finished up with their Readathon prizes this week.
Four classes of students LOVED the chance to roast some marshmallows over a fire! They gathered around the camp fire, some for the first time, and toasted those yummy white desserts to their hearts content. Who doesn't want a s'more!?!
Some students won the prize of a movie, and snuggled into the library for a fun time.
Many thanks to MESA and families who helped make these events happen, and of course to the students who were such amazing readers!
Everybody Wins!
Families of students who participate in Everybody Wins and their mentors had a chance to celebrate their relationships and reading this week with a pizza dinner at Mary Hogan. Participants wrote and shared Mad Libs, did some book trivia, and had a ball.
Everybody Wins partners Mary Hogan 2nd through 5th graders with community mentors who come and have lunch and read with their partner each week. The program has over 70 students involved, which is about 30% of all students in grades 2-5! Amazing!
Thanks to Hannafords, Cookie Love, Steve & Kathleen Marinelli, and Sarah Urang for making this fun happen!

ACSD Announcements
Important Measles update from our ACSD Nurses
The VT Dept. of Health confirmed the first measles case in Vermont in 2025. Measles is an extremely infectious, airborne illness that can cause severe illness and even death. Babies, young children, and people with weak immune systems are at higher risk of getting very sick from measles.
Important facts to keep your family safe:
Symptoms usually start with high fever, cough, runny nose, and red/watery eyes. The characteristic rash usually appears 3-5 days after first symptoms. Call your healthcare provider with any symptoms.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases. It is airborne and spread through direct contact with infectious droplets.
Vaccination is the best way to prevent and protect your family against serious illness. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective. Two doses are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.
Contact your health care provider to ensure your family is up-to-date or to get vaccinated. Measles vaccines are free in Vermont.
Learn more about measles symptoms, spread, and prevention in the full update from our ACSD nurses and at HealthVermont.gov/measles
