Dear Roland Hayes School Community
I start this week's missive with a very serious demand: when dropping off students in the morning, you must drive slowly and carefully. Children are everywhere – walking, running, biking, crossing streets, and coming out of cars. DO NOT drop off your child and then speed off through the front parking – that behavior is dangerous, reckless, and scary. When driving on Eliot, be equally slow and mindful. Reckless driving behaviors will be confronted vigorously.
I try to start each message with good news and important updates. No other message is as important as a humble, yet urgent request to keep our children physically safe and out of harm's way.
I also try and be in the front parking lot each morning to support the arrival process, but it is impossible for me to be there each morning. I am depending on all of us to collectively make this the safest place it can be.
Thank you.

Plus, it is such a great feeling to support the arts, especially when it is our scrappy crew. We hope to see many, many of you tonight for the final showing – 6pm start time!
It's Mayfair Time!
It's MAYFAIR TIME!!!
Mayfair this year will include a 28-foot rock wall, 4 bungee trampolines, a riding bull ride, carnival games, crafts, food and much more!
The big day is May 31st from 1-5pm.
Volunteer Link to Volunteer Sign Up Please plan to spend the day enjoying fun and games, and volunteer for a shift to make the event a success. You can sign up with a friend, take turns with a partner following kids and volunteering for a shift, or hire your nanny to do a shift for you. People that have volunteered in the past have had a great time interacting with all the Hayes students. It is going to be so fun! Thanks for helping! Donate a cake Link to Cake Walk Sign Up Competing to win a cake at the Mayfair Cake Walk has been one of the most popular family activities at Mayfair, and we're excited to be continuing this tradition. Volunteer to bring a cake to Mayfair! We have found that smaller cakes or large cupcakes are best. Students and adults are encouraged to make items, but store-bought is welcome too. To donate, please plan to drop off your cake at Hayes on Friday, May 30 (the day before Mayfair). We appreciate your support! Bid on the Auction Link to Bid on Auction May 24-31 Our annual online auction will have amazing items once again - a weekend on Cape Cod, Celtic tickets, Red Sox Green Monster seats with a tour, Principal-in-Training Day, and more! Bid on these items from May 24 to May 31! To donate to the silent auction, email Courtney Hanna at courtneyhrenkes@gmail.com Purchase your Armband Link to PTO Venmo You can buy tickets for each activity on event day, but for your convenience we offer a $40 armband which includes unlimited activities for your child and this year the wristband will also get each child a bag of popcorn and a cotton candy. Other food will be available to purchase. Armbands are available on event day or in advance.

Information About a Research Study At Our School
We want to let you know about an exciting study that is taking place in our school. Our school is partnering with a national research team to learn more about school meals and the impact of an upcoming new federal policy to update the school meal standards. The study will look at the amount of food eaten by students who eat school meals.
No identifying information will be collected from students.
More details about this study can be found at this secure link:
Wear A Helmet with Riding or Scooting!!!!!!
Now that Spring is here, we have an uptick in kids cycling and riding scooters.
We are BEGGING you to make sure your kids wear a properly sized helmet. So often we see kids flying around campus without a helmet and it makes the blood in our veins run cold.
So, please, make sure that your kids are wearing a helmet when riding bikes and scooters.
New Policy: Personal Electronic Devices in Schools
This year, we have tightened up our practices regarding personal electronic device (PED) use in schools (as is noted in our Family Handbook).
The School Committee just affirmed our practices and solidified personal electronic device (PED) use in the new and approved policy, here:
When students are in the care of the school (from arrival until dismissal) all PED devices are off and away. This includes the period between 7:30 and 8:00am when many students are in the cafeteria.
We have messages the policy to all students, with a particular emphasis on communicating clearly and often with our middle school crew.
We thank you for reiterating this message at home, as well.

In Closing
My morning commute this time each year takes me through some very beautiful, wide-open farm lands. These open spaces are not quite yet in bloom with a many summer crops, making it a perfect nursery for baby Canada geese goslings. These babies are such a delight to watch grow, and then - soon - they will be gone into the great wide world.
Wild Geese | Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting–
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
Is there something or someone bringing you joy these days? Something or someone you look forward to seeing each day? With spring finally here, I truly hope your world is opening up to you!
~ Asa
Our Land Acknowledgement
This parcel of land that our school sits upon is a special and sacred place.
Before this place was a Town, before our school was here, before this neighborhood was called “The Settlement” or “Chestnut Hill,” and before this land was a farm, this land was held by the Massachusett, the people Indigenous to this place. The Massachusett were the caretakers of this site, living full lives, raising families, and burying their dead right here. We recognize and honor this history, and seek to create thoughtful land stewards and citizens for generations to come.
As a public school, our primary objective is to ensure access, membership, and participation of all community members in our care; with this land acknowledgment we state our willingness to work towards that vision where all feel a true and abiding sense of belonging.
