OCTOBER 2026
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Wabash Community!
Can you believe that October is right around the corner? Time sure does fly when you are having fun!
Our first quarter will be coming to an end on Oct. 16, 2026. Our parent/teacher conferences will be held in person from 4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29. Report cards will be shared with you at the parent/teacher conferences and published on the FOCUS app on Oct. 28.
This year, our Wentzville School District schools will continue the process of implementing the Leader in Me program. We are excited to continue this program as a part of what we do! Our faculty and staff are taking part in ongoing training sessions. Here is some added information about Leader in Me.
Throughout the duration of this academic school year, the Wentzville School District partners with community agencies that specialize in providing students, families, and educators with preventative education. Agency presenters are credentialed, coordinated through the District, and under the supervision of building administrators. Presentation topics are targeted toward specific grade levels. All of the students will participate in each program, unless you choose to opt your child out of the lesson(s). If you would like further details and/or are interested in opting your student(s) out of presentation(s), please click this link.
Again this year, across the Wentzville School District, some students will be qualifying for a Reading Success Plan. Please follow this link for information about Reading Support Plans, including at-home resources for parents and guardians. More communication will be shared with families at our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences for those who qualify for these plans.
Our Kitchen Manager and cafe cashiers request a bit of help this year from you at home. Each day, students have to enter their pin number to successfully purchase a meal from the cafe. Please take time at home to help you child(ren) learn their pin numbers. If your child is not sure of their pin number, either the classroom teacher or our main office is happy to help you get that pin number.
Thank you to the entire Wabash community for modeling and expecting independence and excellence! Our students are off to a wonderful start this year. Let's keep our students focused on building independence and excellence in academics and character.
Please remember that Mrs. Siller, Ms. Jones and I are always available to support you and your children. Please do not hesitate to stop in, call or email us with any questions or concerns. We are here for your children.
Every Student Matters, Every Moment Counts!
Mr. Schulte
LEADER IN ME

Benefits of Free Play for Children
As the phone-based childhood emerged, the play-based childhood diminished. Smartphones, reaching far beyond basic communication, have infiltrated almost every aspect of modern life. Yet still, playing–free play specifically–can still help develop your child and help children learn. Physical play with other children is one of the most developmentally beneficial types of play. As Jonathon Haidt shares in his book The Anxious Generation, free play is not coordinated, directed by adults (or even necessarily elaborately planned ) – it is independent and progresses naturally, led by the kids themselves. In free play, kids can learn to handle small social injustices, read social skills, work together, solve conflicts, and take turns. They learn how to negotiate the rules of situations. They learn how to handle small injuries without overreacting. In short, through this simple process of playing, kids can learn to cope with basic situations and gain confidence in themselves and in their ability to handle more challenging situations independently. Ultimately, these skills can lead to higher overall confidence and a better skillset for dealing with anxiety.

READING DEPARTMENT
We encourage families to spend a few minutes each day practicing letters, letter sounds, and sight words with younger students. Even short, consistent practice at home can make a big difference in building confidence and early reading skills. For older students we ask that you practice comprehension skills at home by talking about what your child reads or listens to. Ask questions such as, “What happened?” “Why did that happen?” and “What do you think will happen next?” These simple conversations help children build understanding, make connections, and become stronger, more confident readers. Thank you for supporting your child’s learning!
NURSE NEWS
Halloween Safety
1. Cross at corners: Use crosswalks and traffic signals, and look left, right, and left again before crossing.
2. Put phones down: Avoid texting or looking at electronic devices while walking near roads.
3. Stay visible: Carry a flashlight or glow stick, and add reflective tape to costumes and bags.
4. Stick together: Travel in groups and stay on well-lit, familiar streets.
5. Wait until home: Do not eat any candy or snacks while you are still out.
6. Inspect everything: Throw away any unwrapped, opened, or suspicious items.
Handwashing
Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. Proper Handwashing significantly reduces illness.
Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
Dry your hands using a clean towel or an air dryer.
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Within the Wentzville School District, the well-being and success of your children are of utmost importance to us. To ensure their overall health and academic performance, we are pleased to inform you of our upcoming hearing and vision screening program.
Between October 1 and November 22, we will be conducting hearing and vision screenings in grades pre-K through 3rd grade. These screenings are a crucial part of our commitment to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
Details of the screenings are as follows:
- Hearing Screenings: These screenings will check for any hearing issues that may affect your child's ability to fully engage in their education.
- Vision Screenings: These screenings will assess your child’s vision, helping to identify any potential visual impairments that might hinder their academic progress.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the hearing and vision screenings, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school nurse. They will be more than happy to provide you with additional information and address any inquiries you may have.
We appreciate your partnership in maintaining the health and well-being of our students.
Together, we can ensure that every child in our district has the opportunity to thrive.
Thank you for your continued support.
