Second Grade

  • Learn: This week we break from Google to learn a little more about computers and how they work.

Watch the videos

What is A Computer and

How Computers Computers Work: What Makes a Computer a Computer?

  • Adventure: Computer Safari Where do you see computers in your everyday life? Keep a list of where you find computers over the next week and what those computers do. If you use the list on the Computer Safari activity page use your device to take a picture of the completed list and send the picture to me using your school Gmail. If you do not have a printer use a Google doc and share it with me.
  • Remember to read every day.
  • Read Aloud The Night I Followed the Dog by Nina Laden

Third Grade

This week we start exploring algorithms and computational thinking- how to think like a computer. How can we learn to solve problems better by noticing how computers solve problems?

Learn: 1.Computational Thinking. In this short video, you will learn how computers think about information and how you can better communicate with them.

2. This video on Computational Thinking is for teachers and students. Linda shows exactly how exact one needs to be to create a toothbrushing algorithm.

Activity: What's the Order? Use this activity sheet to think like a computer and break a simple activity into steps a computer can follow. If you don't have a printer use a blank paper to draw out your processes.

Now, how would that toothbrushing look as block code? Try to code brushing your teeth using this activity.

Use your device to take a picture of your process or your block code and either email the picture to me or insert it into your Google Classroom in the space I provide.

Fourth Grade

Learn: This week we review Google Sheets. Sheets is the spreadsheet app in Google that lets us organize data, information, and create graphs and other visual representations of that data and information. Watch the following video introductions to Google Sheets:

Introduction to Google Sheets

Modifying Cells

Activity: The best way to learn is by doing so take this WebQuest and plan a party using Google Sheets to organize party planning. Be sure to read the introduction and other text because important information for your spreadsheet is included in that paragraph. The directions are step by step. When you finish Q1 go on to Q2 (quest 2) until you finish all five. The last quest is to share your spreadsheet so please share it with me at Kelly.mccollum@watertown.k12.ma.us.

This assignment will be in your Google Classroom. Completing this means we can also play a game with our classmates using Google Sheets :)
