MCS America 250 Weekly Message MCS America 250 Weekly Message

Did you know that on July 4, 2026 we celebrated America’s 250th birthday? This school

year, we will be highlighting 250 Years of Independence with weekly announcements

through 2026 as we celebrate the Semiquincentennial (se-mē-quinn-sen-ten-ē-el) of

American Independence.

We celebrate America’s independence on July 4th, but many of the 56 delegates who

voted for independence didn't actually sign the Declaration of Independence until August

2nd, 1776.

Our person of focus this week is John Hancock of Massachusetts. As the President of the

Continental Congress, he was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence, and his

signature is the largest and boldest!

It is said he signed it so large that King George III wouldn't need his glasses to read it.

That bold signature was a monumental act of defiance, making him a traitor to the British

Crown.

John Hancock was willing to stand up in support of his country. This week, think about

what you are willing to stand up for.

We’ll be back next week with another Declaration Spotlight to celebrate America’s 250th

birthday.
