Message from Principal Parravano
As we approach rivalry games and playoff competition, we share your excitement for the opportunities ahead. These moments can bring out the best in our student-athletes and bring our school community together. They also carry a responsibility to uphold the proud traditions and reputation of Grosse Pointe South.
An enthusiastic, positive crowd can lift a team and help turn the tide of a contest. The opposite can also be true: a crowd focused on berating officials or opponents can distract our student-athletes and undermine their ability to play to their full potential.
We ask everyone to keep these expectations in mind:
Cheer for South. Bring your energy and enthusiasm to supporting our team. Personal insults or demeaning comments directed at opposing players, coaches, or fans have no place in our stands.
Respect officials. Officials will make mistakes, and some calls will not go our way. We can disagree while still treating them with dignity and respect. How we respond to frustration reflects who we are.
Support our teams responsibly online. Use social media to celebrate South and our student-athletes. Do not post or share comments, photos, or AI-generated images intended to demean opposing teams, players, or coaches. Reports of this conduct will be investigated and addressed under the applicable student and extracurricular codes of conduct.
Respect our opponents’ campuses and traditions. Mocking traditions, defacing property, or targeting another school under the guise of a joke or prank can cause real harm and carry serious consequences. Rivalry is no excuse for disrespect.
These expectations apply to all fans and spectators, whether they are students or adults. Anyone who fails to meet these standards will be asked to leave a game or contest. Disrespectful behavior from another school, opponent, or fan does not justify responding in kind. We will hold ourselves to a higher standard and remain responsible for our own choices.
Parents and families, please reinforce these expectations with your students and model them alongside us at competitions.
We want South to compete with passion and handle success, disappointment, and adversity with class and composure. That means staying above the line and representing the best of South.
Rivalry and high-level competition can create lasting memories and stories that are passed down for years. Let’s make sure those stories reflect our school spirit, our sportsmanship, and the pride we take in being a Blue Devil.
Go South!

Share Your Story. Inspire a Student
Mentoring students is the greatest joy of my work as an educator. Through education, careers, raising families, and navigating life’s challenges, we gain experiences and lessons that can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life.
We all have a story, and we are inviting guest speakers to Grosse Pointe South to share theirs. What has shaped your journey? What challenges have you overcome? What life lessons or career advice would you like students to hear?
We welcome speakers from all career backgrounds, including medicine, law, skilled trades, entrepreneurship, manufacturing, and beyond. Your perspective can help students discover opportunities, build confidence, and imagine their futures.
Guest speakers would meet with groups of approximately 25–50 students during South’s two lunch periods - 10:44am-11:22am & 11:42am-12:20pm
If you are interested in sharing your story, please contact me at hyliard@gpschools.org. Thank you for considering this opportunity to connect with and inspire our students.

Specifically, smartwatches (Apple, Google, Samsung, etc.) and AI glasses (Ray-Ban, Meta, Oakely, etc.) are considered personal communication devices and fall under the Off and Out of Sight policy. Also note, the College Board does not allow AI glasses (Ray-Ban, Meta, Oakely, etc.) in testing. Please be aware of the district technology guidelines before purchasing for your student.

Walk Your Wheels: Updated E-Bike and E-Moto Guidance
Earlier this school year, GPPSS communicated that e-bikes were not permitted on school property. Since then, we have received thoughtful questions and feedback from students, families, and community members about e-bikes, e-scooters, and the growing variety of electric motorized devices students are using to travel to and from school.
We appreciate that feedback, and we listened.
One theme that emerged from those conversations was the need to balance two important priorities: supporting safe ways for students to travel to school while keeping our busy school grounds and arrival and dismissal areas safe for everyone.
As a result, we are refining our approach and introducing a simple districtwide safety expectation:
Walk Your Wheels in School Zones
Moving forward, students may bring Michigan-compliant e-bikes to school. Once students reach school property and adjacent sidewalks, bicycles, scooters, e-bikes, and e-scooters should be walked—not ridden.
This gives students the ability to use these devices for transportation while reducing the risk of collisions in areas where students, families, buses, and vehicles are moving during arrival and dismissal.
What is an e-bike?
An e-bike is a bicycle with a seat or saddle, fully operable pedals, and an electric motor of 750 watts or less. Under Michigan's e-bike classifications, electric assistance is limited to no more than 28 mph.
What is an e-moto?
An e-moto is a higher-powered electric motorbike that does not meet Michigan's definition of an e-bike. These devices may look similar to e-bikes but operate more like motorcycles or other motor vehicles. For example, a device may be considered an e-moto rather than an e-bike if it does not have fully operable pedals, exceeds 750 watts, provides motor assistance above 28 mph, or operates primarily by throttle above 20 mph.
Because e-motos are motor vehicles rather than e-bikes, students may not bring or operate e-motos on elementary or middle school property.
At the high school level, students may bring a qualifying motorized vehicle to school only when the student and vehicle meet the applicable Michigan requirements for that type of vehicle, including any required license or endorsement, registration, insurance, and safety equipment. The vehicle must also be registered with the school and have an approved student parking permit.
Please take a few minutes to review these expectations with your student, particularly if they ride an electric bike or other motorized device to school.
When you reach the school zone, walk your wheels.
Whether you arrive by bicycle, scooter, e-bike, or e-scooter:
Slow down.
Walk safely.
Look out for one another.
Thank you for helping us keep our school communities safe.

As the new school year kicks off, basketball season is right around the corner!
This year, we will be shifting how we communicate both with players and families - we will be utilizing the GPS Athletics App. Please download the app ASAP and register for your respective role (player, parent/guardian). The app will serve as our primary mode of communication moving forward - we will post messages and our game and practice schedule will also live on the app.
We are really excited to be making this shift and I think it will allow for much smoother and more transparent communication! If you need any help downloading, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’ve included a photo of what the app looks like below.
Next important thing, we want to make sure we have all of the correct information on file for girls interested in playing basketball this year. Please complete this survey and share with anyone else who may be interested: https://forms.gle/kBVzq3vRA52Bi4FJ9
And lastly, we are tasked with volunteering for the Freshman/JV football concession stand on Thursday, October 15 from 4pm-8pm. Please complete this survey to sign up for a 2-hour shift: https://forms.gle/FVG8a1t5Hv88YFyW9
All of the links will also be added to the app, so the most important thing is to sign up for the app - that is where all communication will occur moving forward.
Best,
Coach Caitlin
