KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES

I know that our school week started with heartbreaking news about one of our second graders. It was through the sadness that the true family spirit of Northwood shined. Our community has rallied around the family and will continue to do so. Thank you for the compassion and the support sent their way.

Please continue the amazing school community spirit at Family Fun Night tonight. The event - for current Northwood students, and their families - will take place in the back bus loop. Our PTA has been tirelessly planning for this highly-anticipated event, and the weather should be fantastic! Hope to see you there tonight! I also want to thank the team that organized the PTA Fall Mornings. The bookmarks were a wonderful connection to our school focus of growing a love of reading!

With gratitude,

Heather Q. Rucker, principal

PBIS SEPTEMBER CELEBRATION: SIDEWALK CHALK FUN!

Each month, our school celebrates students who meet their PBIS reward goal with a special activity, and September’s celebration was a colorful one! Students in grades K–5 got to enjoy extra time outside creating with sidewalk chalk.

Each grade level was assigned a different spot around the school, and before long our sidewalks were transformed into a bright, cheerful gallery. Students drew pictures, played games like tic-tac-toe, and even worked together on large, creative art pieces. Laughter, collaboration, and creativity filled the air as classmates shared ideas and enjoyed making something together.

The best part? The artwork didn’t end with the celebration. Now, as students and staff walk around campus, they get to enjoy the colorful chalk designs that still line our walkways—a lasting reminder of the fun, teamwork, and positive choices that made this celebration possible.

HERE TODAY, READY FOR TOMORROW: ATTENDANCE PRIORITIES AT NORTHWOOD

Our attendance focus this school year is “Strive for 95!” We want our Explorers to be present for 95% of our school days. Excellent attendance ensures the best delivery of excellent instruction. Through the end of September, 86.6% of our Explorers have achieved that standard!

We understand that some absences are unavoidable. If your Explorer is absent from school, please email northwoodattendance@fultonschools.org to notify the proper staff.

Did you know that students can request up to 5 Participate Remote Learning Days per semester and receive attendance credit by completing academic work remotely? Parents can submit this form to their child’s teacher prior to an expected absence.

Your involvement as parents and guardians is an essential factor in creating a positive and engaging school environment. Together, we can foster an atmosphere where students are excited to come to school, engage in learning, and build a foundation for a successful future.

Click here to learn more at Northwood’s Attendance Webpage. In addition, FCS attendance policy information can be found at FCS Attendance Matters Website or by contacting our school social worker, Patrick Hartigan, MSW, at hartigan@fultonschools.org

CLINIC NEWS AND NEEDS

24-Hour Rule

As we are moving into the season for several viral illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID-19, we would like to remind you to keep your students home if they have symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, cough and congestion, fever and chills, vomiting, and diarrhea. Students may return to school after their symptoms have improved and they have been fever free without medicine for 24 hours. The 24-hour rule also applies to vomiting and diarrhea.

Clothing Donations

Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes and appreciate donations of all clothing sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk.

NORTHWOOD HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Throughout October, Northwood students in grades 1–5 will participate in the Fit Georgia physical fitness assessment during Health and Physical Education classes. This state-developed program evaluates key components of physical health, including healthy body ranges, aerobic capacity, flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. It aligns with Georgia standards and replaces the previous fitness testing platform.

Students will complete the following assessments: the 15m PACER for aerobic capacity, push-ups for upper body strength and endurance, curl-ups for abdominal strength and endurance, the back-saver sit and reach for flexibility, and height/weight measurements for healthy body range.

HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHTS: EARLY CHECKOUT PROCEDURES

The school day ends at 2:20 pm. Please avoid early checkouts as instruction goes on until 2:15 pm. If your child must be checked out early, please do so before 2:00 pm. After 2:00 pm, students will be sent using normal dismissal procedures so as not to interfere with the school-wide dismissal process. We appreciate your cooperation and consideration.

NEW CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND

This year, with the new lunch system, our school community has the capability to create a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account would be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!

Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Ms. Juana Moore, our regional supervisor and interim cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Ms. Moore, moorejr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.

MySchoolBucks

Pay for school meals and fees securely online! With MySchoolBucks, parents can also view cafeteria purchases, access meal balances, register for activities, purchase event tickets, browse school items, and more.
