Happy Friday, Brandt Bears!

Another wonderful week is in the books, and our school community continues to grow stronger with each passing day. As the fall season settles in, our halls are filled with learning, laughter, friendship, and the excitement of new experiences. We are grateful for the incredible partnership between our families and staff, which helps make Brandt such a special place to learn and grow.

As we head into the weekend, we hope our families enjoy time together, find moments to relax and recharge, and make a few special memories along the way. We look forward to welcoming our Bears back on Monday for another great week! A friendly reminder that Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, October 21st. We look forward to connecting with our families and continuing to work together to support every student's growth and success.

With gratitude,

Principal Dickerson

FRIENDLY REMINDERS FRIENDLY REMINDERS

Quick Goodbyes Leave Dry Eyes!
We know how meaningful those morning moments are, especially when your child may need a little extra reassurance before starting the day. However, we have noticed that some families are holding hands and walking with their child’s class as the line enters the building. While the intention is certainly loving, it can slow the entire line down and, sometimes, make saying goodbye even harder for our students. We encourage families to give their Bears a big hug, a high five, and a confident “Have a great day!” before allowing them to join their class. Quick goodbyes leave dry eyes, and confident goodbyes help children start the day ready to learn!

On Time Means Ready to Learn!
We also want to remind families of the importance of arriving at school on time. Even being five minutes late can mean missing important morning instruction, routines, directions, and opportunities to connect with classmates. More importantly, entering the building after the school day has begun can be stressful for a child, particularly when they have to make their way through the building with the “Late Train.” Those five minutes can be the difference between a focused and attentive learner and a rushed and unsettled learner.

Our goal is simple: we want every Bear to begin the day feeling calm, confident, connected, and ready to learn. Thank you for helping us make that possible!

Doors will open at 8:15 AM - please make sure to be on time as we all know traffic can be a challenge in the morning. The school day ends at 3:00 PM. The Passport to Learning After School Program does starts on September 8, 2026 as well.

For arrival time, 9th Street is closed to traffic. All are reminded of the designated arrival procedures:

  • Kindergarten and First Grade classes line up on 9th Street, are met by staff outside, and enter through the main entrance. Please make sure you look for your homeroom's designated spot - there are signs posted in the windows on 9th Street. It is incredibly important that parents and guardians DO NOT CROWD the sidewalk at arrival (or dismissal) time. All should remain in the street.
  • Second grade lines up on Garden Street. Those classes are met by staff and enter through the door at the corner of 9th and Garden.
  • Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students will enter the door at the corner of 9th and Park and proceed upstairs directly to their homerooms where staff will await their arrival.

K - 2 students will proceed to the same spots for dismissal at the end of the day. Grades 3 - 5 families should become familiar with designated dismissal spots on Park Ave (there are also signs in the windows).

HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARADE HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARADE

Get ready, Brandt Bears!

We are excited to celebrate Halloween with our annual Halloween Costume Parade on Friday, October 30th at 9:00 AM! Students are invited to come to school in their costumes and show off their Halloween spirit as they parade around the block. Families are welcome to gather around the perimeter of the building to cheer on our students, celebrate their creativity, and take photos as each class makes its way along the parade route.

Parade Route & Where to Stand

The parade will begin at the main entrance on 9th Street. Classes will exit the building and walk toward Garden Street, turn onto Garden Street, continue to 8th Street, and then turn onto Park Avenue. Students will continue along Park Avenue before turning back onto 9th Street and returning to the school through the front entrance. Families may position themselves anywhere along the parade route around the building perimeter to watch, cheer, and take photos. Please remain on the outside of the sidewalk and allow our classes plenty of room to move safely along the route.

Food & Treat Reminder

Due to severe allergies, NO food, candy, treats, or goody bags may be sent to school. This includes food intended to be shared with the class as well as items that would be sent home in students’ backpacks. If you would like to send something in for the entire class, non-candy and non-food items are welcome. Thank you for helping us keep our Halloween celebration safe, inclusive, and fun for every Brandt Bear!

Costume Guidelines

Students must be recognizable and should not wear costumes that limit their vision or create a safety hazard. Costume masks are not permitted. Face paint is allowed, but no more than 50% of the child’s face can be covered with face paint. Students must be identifiable.

Please remember that all costumes must be age appropriate for an elementary school, respectful, and in good taste. We want Halloween to be a celebration where everyone feels comfortable, included, and ready to have fun.

Be kind. Keep it fun. Be mindful of your actions.

Costumes must not be offensive or inappropriate in terms of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, gender, disability, or any other personal characteristic. For everyone's safety, costumes should not include weapons, realistic replicas of weapons, or items that could create a safety concern.

Questions about costumes? Please contact Principal Dickerson or Dr. Baskinger.

We can't wait to see our Brandt Bears dressed up and ready to parade!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

If your child gets sick, it is often most appropriate to keep him/her home from school. A child

who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other

children and staff. Please make arrangements for childcare ahead of time so you will not be

caught without a place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.

Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if he/she has:

1. Fever (>100.4 degrees) in the past 24 hours. (Fever reducing medication should not be given prior to school as it wears off within 4 hours)

2. Vomiting in the past 24 hours

3. Diarrhea in the past 24 hours

4. Chills

5. Sore throat

6. Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning

to school).

7. Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake

at night.

If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feel the child is too sick to

benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take

him/her home from school. It is essential that your child’s teacher have a phone number where

you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be

reached. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from

school and that childcare is available in case of illness. If your daytime or emergency phone

number change during the year, please notify your child’s teacher immediately or the main office.

These guidelines are meant to serve the best interests of all the children in our school. If you

have questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school nurse.

Warm Regards,

Nurse Cassandra

Celebrating Respect & Making Healthy Choices!

It has been a wonderful month so far at Brandt School as we celebrated Week of Respect from October 5–9! 💙💛 Throughout the week, our students were reminded of the importance of treating others with kindness, showing empathy, and creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

Respect is more than just words—it is shown through our actions every day! Whether it is including a classmate, listening when someone is speaking, offering a helping hand, or standing up for others, every small act of kindness makes a difference. We are so proud of our Brandt Bears for helping make our school community a place where everyone feels valued and respected!

❤️ Coming Up: Red Ribbon Week

October 26–30 | Choose Healthy Choices!

Brandt School will celebrate Red Ribbon Week from October 26–30! This nationwide campaign encourages students to make healthy choices, build positive habits, and understand the importance of taking care of their minds and bodies.

Throughout the week, students will learn about making safe decisions, staying healthy, surrounding themselves with positive influences, and choosing activities that help them grow into their best selves.

As parents and caregivers, you can help reinforce these important messages at home by encouraging open conversations, modeling healthy habits, and reminding your children that the choices they make each day can have a positive impact on their future.

Let’s work together to help our Brandt Bears make choices that keep them healthy, happy, and ready to shine! 🐻

Remember, Brandt Bears: Be kind, show respect, and choose healthy choices every day!

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

This week in ELA, we are learning all about the letter Ss. We practiced how to recognize it, write it, and say the sound it makes. We’re also focusing on our new sight word “see,” using it in reading and writing activities to build confidence and fluency. We explored the essential question: “How can your senses help you learn?” Through engaging discussions and the book Senses at the Seashore, students are discovering how their five senses help them explore and understand the world around them.

SLA (Spanish Language Arts – Dual Language)

In SLA, students are learning the letter T and practicing the syllables it forms with the vowels: ta, te, ti, to, tu. Students are also practicing how to read and write our high-frequency word of the week, “el.”

🔢 Math

In math, we are working with numbers up to 20 by using visual images and hands on games. Students are playing Roll and Record to practice recognizing quantities, matching them to numerals, and connecting number names with actual amounts.

🌎 Social Studies

In Social Studies, students continue to focus on the neighborhood and community. Students are learning to identify places on a map, name important landmarks, and understand how people travel in their communities. We’ve been discussing and learning about different countries and cultures for Hispanic Heritage Month.
