reflections for Veteran's Day
Very little has been said about our own family members who served during World War II. That’s why I was drawn to The Wounded Generation by historian David Nasaw, which explores the unspoken toll the war took—not just on those who fought, but on the families they returned to. Often called “The Greatest Generation,” these veterans & home-front workers carried invisible wounds that went largely unrecognized. Many who sought help were told they suffered only from “battle fatigue” that time would heal. It didn’t. What we now understand as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) went untreated for decades. The America they came home to had changed—marked by shortages of food, clothing, & housing, & by fear that economic depression might return. As we observe Veteran’s Day, it’s worth remembering not only their bravery in war, but also their quiet endurance in peace—and the lasting impact their sacrifices had on our families & nation.
