Welcome (almost) back, GMS family! I hope you are having a wonderful summer and we're so excited to see you back in the building for the 20205-2026 school year. I'm sure you're feeling a whole range of emotions as you prepare to come back to school. I just read this great article with tips from actual students for the beginning of the year and wanted to share a few of them:

- From a 2nd grader in Virginia: "Learn kindness and how to help others. You can have lots of friends if you are kind!

- From a 3rd grader: "Eat your whole lunch and enjoy your recess!"

- From some 6th graders in NY and Chicago: "Keep your pencils sharp and write neatly" and "avoid procrastinating and cutting corners"

- From a 7th grader in North Carolina: "A positive attitude and open mind will help with all classes." Plus, she labels her school supplies

- From a 9th grader: "Carry a water bottle with you!" Not only do you stay hydrated, but you can go and refill it when you need a quick break

- From an 11th grader in Kentucky: "Get a good night's sleep" and "no matter how difficult or lonely it gets, try to make the most of the [middle] school experience, every fleeting moment."

I hope to see many of you when you come in to pick up schedules! Please remember that I will only change your classes under extenuating circumstances. You can always email me if you have any questions or want to chat (slamar@gunnisonschools.net). See you soon! Go, Mustangs!

Fall Athletics Start Dates: August 19. Emails with more information will be sent to families througout the summer! Thanks to GVH for offering this incredible opportunity for our athletes to get low-cost physicals this summer! See the flyer attached for more information.

8th Grade Taylor Challenge Information

Taylor Challenge is an 8th grade opportunity which started back in 1988, which we continue to this day! This three-day, two-night outdoor education program is unique in that it allows for academics, outdoor skills, and improves student/teacher relationships. During Taylor Challenge, students raft the Upper Taylor River with Scenic River Tours, rock climb, fly fish, learn archery, complete high and low ropes courses at AEI Basecamp above Taylor Reservoir (this is also where we eat and sleep), and experience team building opportunities. All eighth grade students are expected to attend the Taylor Challenge as it is the basis for our 8th grade school year. Taylor This Outdoor Education Program will take place the first Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (August 27 - August 29) of school. Please be aware that your student will need to have a current physical (as of Wednesday August 27, 2025) on file at the school in order to participate. The Taylor Challenge Experience would normally cost clients approximately $600 per person. This year, the fee will be $115 per student to attend this three-day program. This fee covers transportation, accommodations, meals, and some activities (ropes course, rafting, rock climbing, fly fishing, and archery). Payment can be turned in via My Payments Plus (payment plans are available), cash/check when you pick up your student’s 8th grade schedule on August 12, 2025 for 8th grade registration from 9-12. We will have a Taylor Challenge Orientation meeting on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at Gunnison Middle School. We will answer questions, talk about expectations, and give an overview of this three-day experience at that time. We recommend all students and parents attend this meeting. All paperwork must be turned in by the end of the evening. If you have any initial questions, or to request copies of paperwork, please contact Molly Childerston, Taylor Challenge Director, mchilderston@gunnisonschools.net
