May 8, 2026
May is in full swing at The Lake. We enjoyed a wonderful week with the start of our choral concerts, and our PTG helped celebrate staff during National Teacher Appreciation Week.
As we head into the final stretch of the school year, May is filled with opportunities for families to get involved. Upcoming events include the annual Art Show, music concerts, the Spring Book Fair, and our final PTG meeting of the year May 12th. We hope to see many of you there.
This newsletter also includes our annual spring parent survey. Your feedback is important as we continue planning and improving our school community. PTG is also seeking volunteers and your feedback in a survey for next year, and we encourage anyone interested to consider getting involved.
Finally, we are excited to share an early opportunity for current students to participate in a Summer 2027 trip to Costa Rica. Be sure to check the newsletter for more information.
Sincerely,
Ryan Buterbaugh
ART SHOW
Join us on Wednesday, May 13 for an evening of the arts! Not only can you view the annual Springton Lake Art show from 6:00-8:00, but you can also attend grade level band concerts and the jazz band between 6:30 and 8:30. Please take the time to come see and hear how creative and talented our students are! Weave your way from the auditorium lobby or the front lobby, to the specials’ hallway, to the art rooms on the first floor. You can view sixth and seventh grade art from Color and Design, Drawing, Sculpture, and Graphic Design, and from our 8th Grade Art Electives, which include Contemporary Sculpture, Doodles to Drawings, Digital Art, and Painting. Mr. Reno, Mrs. Prior, Ms. Loeper, Mr. Henretig and Mrs. Ruckle all look forward to seeing you on May 13!
Book Fair
The Spring Book Fair will take place next week May 11-15 in the library. Students will visit the fair during their language arts class and will have an opportunity to purchase required summer titles, as well as other amazing books. Because the fair is through a local bookstore, only cash and checks made out to RTMSD can be accepted as payment. Next year's One School, One Book (all-school summer read for students entering grades 6, 7, and 8) is New Kid by Jerry Craft. The cost for the book at the fair will be $16 (no tax). Thank you for supporting the book fair!

Celebrating Our 8th Grade Students
Promotion
The end of the school year for our 8th grade students is a busy and exciting time. While many are beginning to look ahead to high school, we have several events planned over the final month to celebrate our students and ensure their time at The Lake ends on a positive note.
Please click below to access information about end-of-year activities. A copy will also be emailed to all 8th grade families.
Farewell Dance
We are 3 weeks away from the 8th Grade Farewell Dance and we need your help!
Volunteers are needed to help set up on the evening of Thursday, June 4th, as well as chaperones and a clean-up crew on Friday, June 5th. All volunteers will be entered to win one of five prizes: a reserved parking spot or two reserved seats at the 8th Grade Celebration on June 11th! (If you've ever attended this ceremony at SLMS, you know how priceless either prize is!) Sign up here!
If you'd like to donate food or supplies, please check out our Amazon Wish List. All orders will be delivered to the school so you don't need to worry about dropping them off!
The Decorating Committee wants your pictures! Please send pictures of your 8th grader to jmagine@live.com. These must be school related, taken at school or during school events (no personal pictures). 6th-8th grade pics are welcomed. All pictures are not guaranteed to be used as we need to include a variety of all students. Thank you.
Tickets for the dance will be $20 and will go on sale later this month.

Virtual Seminar for Parents on Youth Nicotine Use
Are you a parent trying to make sense of the endless vaping and nicotine products advertised at gas stations, convenience stores, smoke shops, online, etc. right now? You are not alone.
The way nicotine is packaged and targeted to consumers including youth is changing. Beyond vapes, products like nicotine pouches are marketed as “clean” and easy to use. They are often framed as a lifestyle or performance boost, frequently amplified by influencers who make the product seem harmless. What's more, they continue to come in appealing flavors, colors and clever modes like "smart vapes," to further entice youth.
This virtual session, presented by Parents Against Vaping on May 21, 2026, at 6 pm, breaks it down clearly and practically: the signs to look for if you are concerned your youth might be vaping or using nicotine and practical strategies to support you and your youth.
Registration includes free access to the recording of the seminar. Register online.
Update from School Nurse
Allergy season is in full swing. If your student has seasonal allergies and takes allergy medication, please make sure they take the medication before coming to school. The health office does not have allergy medication available. If your student forgets their medication, parents/guardians may bring and administer the medication to their student in the health office.
Just a reminder about our district medication policy. Students are not permitted to have any medication with them at school. Only inhalers and Epipens with self-carry doctor's orders are permitted. Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and Tums are available at the health office with parent permission. If your student needs any other medication at school, please see the Administrations of Medication policy for instructions.
F.A.R.E.
Rose Tree Media School District is committed to improving our society today, and for future generations, through outstanding education, awareness, and appreciation of all people. We work to carry out this mission by exhibiting respect for diversity among our student body, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual identity, disability, socioeconomic class, and religion. The mission of F.A.R.E. is to promote and encourage diversity awareness, provide family support, engage in networking, and create deeper unity and understanding within the Rose Tree Media School District and the surrounding community.
Click on the FARE Information document to learn about upcoming opportunities to get involved and meeting information.
Please also refer to the school calendar for meeting dates and any rescheduling.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
To keep classrooms focused and learning uninterrupted, all wireless devices, including cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, and similar devices, must be OFF and AWAY during the school day unless a teacher gives a specific academic reason to use them. Students will be reminded each morning to power down their devices.
Please let your child know that you will not be texting or calling during school hours. If a student needs to reach a parent, a staff member can provide permission. In an emergency, the main office is the best way to get in touch. More details are available in the Springton Lake Student Handbook.
Thank you for helping us create a safe, distraction-free learning environment!
