Paddock Road Families,

We are officially in the second half of summer, and it is one of my favorite times of the year! School supplies are filling the shelves, students are starting to get excited about moving to a new grade, and I know many are looking forward to seeing friends they haven't seen all summer. Before we know it, our halls will once again be filled with smiling faces and the excitement of a brand-new school year.

This newsletter is packed with important information, so I encourage you to save it and refer back to it as August approaches. Be sure to mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 11—it will be an exciting day at Paddock Road! We will celebrate the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our beautiful new gymnasium and Early Childhood Center, followed by our Open House that evening. (Be sure to check out the postcard below for all the details!)

There are a few very important items that we ask every family to complete as soon as possible:

  • ✅ Annual Student Verification (for returning students; see the email from PowerSchool)
  • ✅ New Student Registration (all required documents are due by August 3)
  • ✅ Complete your Arrival & Dismissal Plans

The 2026–2027 school year is shaping up to be an incredible one. With new spaces, exciting learning opportunities, and an amazing staff ready to welcome your children, I can't wait to see what we accomplish together. Thank you for partnering with us to make Paddock Road such a special place to learn and grow.

PADDOCK ROAD MISSION PADDOCK ROAD MISSION

Our Mission

The mission of Paddock Road Elementary is to provide a program of academic excellence that meets the unique needs of every learner in a positive, supportive environment. We believe students thrive when they are actively engaged in learning and supported through strong partnerships among staff, families, and the community.

At Paddock Road, we hold high expectations for every student—academically, behaviorally, and socially. Together, we are committed to helping every child grow into a confident, capable, and caring learner.

Behavioral Expectations

At Paddock Road, we practice three school-wide expectations every day:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible

These expectations guide our actions in classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, the playground, on the bus, and at school events.

Our students learn two simple truths:

  • It is never okay to be hurtful or disruptive.
  • It is always okay to be kind and a good learner.

BIST Goals for Life

Paddock Road uses the Behavior Intervention Support Team (BIST) framework to teach students the life skills needed to be successful in school and beyond. We encourage students to develop these lifelong habits:

  1. I can make good choices even when I am mad.
  2. I can be okay even when others are not okay.
  3. I can do something even when I don't want to or when it is hard.

These goals help students build self-control, resilience, empathy, and perseverance. By working together—students, staff, and families—we create a safe, caring, and inclusive school where everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.

We’re excited to welcome families to this year’s Open House & Ribbon Cutting on Tuesday, August 11th at 5:00 p.m. This event brings together what was previously Meet Your Team and Curriculum Night into one informative and engaging evening.

Join us to explore your child’s classroom, meet their teacher, and get a preview of what your child will be learning this year. Curriculum handouts outlining key topics and concepts will be available in each classroom. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher—ask questions, learn more about classroom expectations, and build a strong home-school partnership.

If you’d like to continue the conversation beyond the event, please don’t hesitate to reach out by email or schedule a follow-up meeting.

We’re committed to keeping you informed and engaged throughout the year. Teachers will provide regular classroom updates to share what students are learning and what’s coming up next. In addition, we’ll hold two parent-teacher conferences during the year to discuss your child’s progress in more detail.

We look forward to seeing you on August 11!

Online Annual Student Verification forms for the upcoming school year is now available! This process replaces the paper forms sent home at the beginning of each school year. You will use the PowerSchool Parent Portal to access the Registration. Must be done through the website, not mobile app.

All returning families must complete this each year for each of their students!

How do I get started?
Login into your PowerSchool Parent Portal.

  1. Select the student you wish to register from the blue header.
  2. Select the Annual Student Verification Icon on the lower left side.
  3. If you see access online forms with two options: New to PowerSchool Enrollment (left side of screen) AND Link your PowerSchool Enrollment account (right side of screen) ..DO NOT click "Sign In" to link your PowerSchool Enrollment account.
  4. If this is the first time you are entering your parent portal account, then you will need to check the box "To comply with COPPA, I affirm that I am 13 years or older." (Agree to the terms and conditions)
  5. Click Begin Forms

I can’t remember my login for the PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you need a password reset or an account created, email powerschool.support@westside66.net with the full name(s) of children(s) and school(s) they attend. DO NOT try to create an account.

Do I have to answer all the questions?
Required questions are marked as "Required".

What if I need to change some information?
If you would like to make a change, click on the underlined field or click “Prev” to return to a previous page. If you need to change information after you have submitted the form, please email the changes to powerschool.support@westside66.net.

I’ve completed the form, now what?
When you have finished entering your information, click “Submit.” This will send all of the information you’ve entered to the school. If you cannot click on this button, you will need to make sure that you have answered all required questions.

What if I have more than one student at Westside Community Schools?
Do I need to do this for each child? Yes, because you’ll need to provide information that is specific for each child. We recommend that you submit one Annual Student Verification and then start another – this will allow you to “import” shared family information, which will save you time. Go back to your PowerSchool Parent Portal, click on next child's name, then click on the icon again.

*Please complete no later than August 13th.*

📚 A New Approach to Reading & Spelling in Kindergarten–3rd Grade

This fall, Paddock Road Elementary and all Westside Community Schools will begin using the 95 Phonics Core Program, a new evidence-based foundational reading program. We are excited to bring this research-backed resource to our classrooms as we continue strengthening literacy instruction and helping every child become a confident reader.

As part of this new program, spelling instruction and assessments will look a little different for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. If you're accustomed to seeing a weekly list of spelling words come home, you'll notice a new approach.

Rather than memorizing a list of words each week, students will learn and practice phonics patterns and spelling concepts during their daily reading lessons. Research shows that learning spelling patterns—not just individual words—helps children become stronger readers, writers, and spellers because they can apply these skills to many new words they encounter.

At the end of each instructional cycle (approximately every five days), students will complete a brief spelling assessment focused on the phonics skills and spelling patterns they have been learning. Throughout each cycle, teachers will monitor progress and provide support to help every student grow.

🏡 How Families Can Help

One of the best ways to support your child is by practicing the skills they're learning at school. Throughout the year, your child's teacher will send home Family Support Letters filled with simple activities, practice ideas, and resources that reinforce the phonics and spelling patterns being taught in class. These short, engaging activities are designed to build confidence while making learning fun at home.

We are excited about the opportunities this new approach provides and look forward to seeing the tremendous growth our students will make throughout the year. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue building strong readers, writers, and spellers at Paddock Road Elementary!

MEAL INFORMATION FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR MEAL INFORMATION FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR

Meal Accounts

Our district uses a computerized meal system that allows families to deposit money into individual student accounts. When students go through the cafeteria line, the cost of their meal or any extras (e.g., extra pizza or milk) is deducted from their account.

Students who qualify for free meals can still keep money in their accounts to purchase extras not covered by the program.

Meal Prices (Elementary School)

  • Breakfast: $2.40

  • Lunch: $3.30

  • Students can request an extra main portion at lunch. That cost is $2.00 for ALL students, regardless of free/reduced-price status. We allow 3rd-6th students to request an extra portion. Please communicate with your student, or the school, if you do not wish for your student to have this option. (koneck.carrie@westside66.net)

If you’d like to apply for Free or Reduced-Price Meals, you can complete an application online. This information is always kept confidential. https://www.myschoolapps.com/

Adding Money to Meal Accounts

You can add funds to your child’s account by:

  • Bringing cash or a check to the office

  • Visiting MySchoolBucks.com

If an account goes negative, families will be notified by email. Please check your inbox and spam folder regularly. Account balances carry over each year, so help your child start the 2026–2027 school year off with a positive balance.

Running Late or Morning Appointments

If your child will arrive late but still needs a school lunch, please call or email the office by 9:00 AM with their lunch choice. (koneck.carrie@westside66.net)

Visiting for Lunch

If you’d like to eat lunch with your child and order from the cafeteria:

  • Call the office before 9:00 AM to place your lunch order.

  • Adult lunch price: $5.00 (exact change or small bills preferred; pay at the office).

  • Note: Adult meals cannot be charged to student accounts. Cash is the only method of payment.

If you’re bringing your own lunch:

  • No need to call ahead—just let us know when you check in.

  • Please bring food only for your child. There is a No-Share Policy in our lunchroom.

TEACHER ASSIGNMENTS TEACHER ASSIGNMENTS

Be sure to keep an eye on your inbox as we near the end of July and the beginning of August. Class assignments will again be sent to each family via email. If for any reason you have not received your child's placement notice prior to Open House Night on the 11th, please feel free to call the office at 402-390-6465, or email Mrs. Koneck. We can also help direct you the night of Open House if needed.

For kindergarten students, your placement will be determined after the first four days of school. Your child will enjoy getting to know both teachers the first couple of days.

You are invited to BE A PART OF THE MUSIC! This fall, you will have the opportunity to do what so many successful students have done before you by being a part of Band and Strings! In the first three weeks of school we will be visiting all the buildings, demonstrating the instruments, and giving students the opportunity to select an instrument of their choice. We will have a parent meeting about our program on Thursday, August 27th at 6:30 pm at Westside Middle School. All are welcome to attend to learn about elementary instrumental music and meet the teachers. We are excited to introduce you to the world of instrumental music!

BELL TO BELL NO CELL - REMINDER BELL TO BELL NO CELL - REMINDER

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In the 2026-27 school year, we will continue a “Bell to Bell No Cell” procedure. This means at the start of the day, when students enter the classroom, they will place their cell phones and smartwatches in a designated, locked area and will get them back during dismissal procedures at the end of the day.

Our goal with this new rule is to maximize instructional time and ensure that students can focus on their studies. We understand that this will be an adjustment, but we believe it is an important step to maintain a positive and productive learning environment.

A few important reminders:

  • During school hours (arrival until the final dismissal bell), student use of cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices in classrooms and instructional areas is not permitted unless specifically authorized by a staff member or as outlined in a student’s IEP or Section 504 Plan.

  • Devices should be off and will be stored in their classroom's teacher-designated space during class time.

  • Students may use devices before and after school, unless otherwise directed by school administration.

  • Device use is not allowed if it disrupts the educational environment, involves illegal activity, violates school or district policies, goes against staff directives, creates safety risks, infringes on privacy, or involves inappropriate content such as “sexting.” Recording others without permission is strictly prohibited.

  • If you need to communicate with your child during class time, please contact the school office (402) 390-6465 and we will relay your message.

  • Your child will still be able to contact you during the day due to sickness, emergencies, dismissal questions, etc. via the school phones.

  • This includes off campus events and activities (i.e. field trips)

Devices used in violation of these guidelines may be confiscated and returned after school hours to the student or a parent/guardian. Additional disciplinary action may also be taken as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct (see Student-Parent Handbook, pages 44-45).

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work together to keep the focus on learning. If you have any questions or concerns about the new “Bell to Bell No Cell” initiative, please feel free to reach out to contact me.

Thank you for your partnership in making Paddock Road a great place to learn!

A Note About Fidgets at School

We recognize that fidgets can be helpful tools for some students when they are used intentionally to support focus, regulation, and learning. At school, fidgets are considered tools—not toys—and they are provided only when there is a specific need and purpose for their use.

While there is a time and place for fidgets, not every student benefits from having access to one during the school day. Unless a student has a formal support plan that includes the use of a fidget, students should not bring or use fidgets at school. This includes, but is not limited to, items such as NeeDoh and other sensory or novelty items.

To help maintain a focused learning environment, teachers have been asked to collect any toys or fidgets that are brought to school without approval. These items will be placed in a labeled bag and returned to families.

We appreciate your partnership in helping us ensure that classroom tools are used purposefully and that all students have the opportunity to learn in a focused and productive environment. Thank you for your support!

STUDENT DRESS CODE STUDENT DRESS CODE

Students in the Westside Community Schools are expected to dress in a way that is appropriate for the school setting. Students should not dress in a manner that is dangerous to the health and safety of anyone, or interferes with the learning environment or teaching process in our school. The following is a list of examples of attire that will not be considered appropriate; this list is not exclusive, and other forms of attire may be deemed by the Principal to be inappropriate for the school setting:

  • Clothing that shows an inappropriate amount of bare skin or underwear, clothing that is too tight, revealing or baggy, tops and bottoms that do not overlap, or any material that is sheer or lightweight enough to be seen through, or otherwise of an appropriate size and fit so as to be revealing or drag on the ground;

  • Shorts, skirts, etc. that do not extend downward as far as the student’s fingertips when the student is standing fully upright with arms relaxed at his or her side.

  • Sleepwear and slippers, including pajama bottoms, blankets, and costumes, unless part of a school-sponsored activity;

  • Clothing or jewelry that advertises or promotes beer, alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs;

  • Head wear including hats, caps, bandanas, hoods worn over the head, and scarves;

  • Clothing or jewelry which exhibits nudity, profanity, makes sexual references, or carries lewd, indecent, or vulgar double meaning;

  • Heavy coats and jackets.

Consideration will be made for students who wear special clothing as required by religious beliefs, disability, or to convey a particularized message protected by law. Westside Community Schools’ Dress Code guidelines have been developed to create safe and productive learning environments where all students are accepted, engaged, celebrated, and have the opportunity to thrive in school. The final decision regarding attire and grooming will be made by the Principal. In the event a student is uncertain as to whether a particular item or method of grooming is consistent with the school’s guidelines, the student or student’s parent/guardian should contact the Principal. If school staff determine that the student does not meet dress code, the student will be asked to change.

For more information regarding the dress code and code of conduct, please download and read the Elementary Student-Parent Handbook.

WATERBOTTLES AND HEADPHONES WATERBOTTLES AND HEADPHONES

We recommend that all students have a durable set of headphones/earbuds for the school year. We use these daily in our classrooms.

Students are allowed to use the water fountains throughout the day. If you would like your child to bring a water bottle, you are more than welcome to have them do so. Our water fountains are equipped with water bottle fillers. The district and school does not provide students with water bottles.

Please mark these items with your child's name for identification purposes.

While flip-flops and Crocs are very cute and popular, they present some safety challenges for our students out at recess and on gym days. If your student likes to be active at recess, please consider sending safer shoes for those recess/gym feet!

STUDENT PERSONAL PROPERTY STUDENT PERSONAL PROPERTY

Please leave all personal items, such as skateboards, personal electronics, toys, footballs, etc. at home unless specifically requested by the classroom teacher. These items can be costly and could be damaged or lost. Please contact Mrs. McGuire with any questions you may have.

WEATHER WEATHER

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

We are lucky in Nebraska to get to enjoy all four seasons. This also means that at times the weather gets in the way of our fun and plans. Below is a brief description of our procedures when the weather is not cooperating:

Warm Weather: We will stay indoors for recess and safety patrol if the air temperature or heat index is 95° or higher.

Cold Weather: So long as the air temperature or wind chill factor is 10° or warmer, students will be outside for recess and safety patrol.

Air Quality: If the air quality index (AQI) is 151 or higher, we will remain indoors for recess.

Rain: When rain is heavy enough that students would get considerably wet, or when there is thunder or lightning, students will be kept inside or brought inside. In addition, if conditions have been such that fields are muddy, access to dirt and grass areas may be restricted as well as playground equipment if it is deemed too slick for safe play.

Severe Weather: If the National Weather Service issues a Thunderstorm Warning students are kept inside. In the event of a Tornado Warning, students are moved to our area of refuge in the new addition.

UPDATE: BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS UPDATE: BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

We know it takes a village, and we appreciate the participation and support we receive from families and friends of our school, such as yourself. Starting last spring, our district has updated the requirements around volunteers to include completing a background check. This additional step seeks to ensure that we have taken careful steps to support the safety and well-being of our students, families, and staff.

If you have signed up or plan to sign up as a volunteer at our school, during events, or for class field trips, it’s important to get a start on this process as it can take several weeks to receive results.

Background Checks are Required for…

  • Room parents for parties (We know parent schedules sometimes change at the last minute, so it may be important to have any adults who will volunteer in your household complete this.)

  • Field Day

  • School Club Sponsors and Volunteers

  • Field Trip Volunteers

  • Classroom Volunteers

Important: If you are uncertain if your role will require having a background check completed, please check with Mrs. McGuire, allowing at least 3 weeks to complete the process if necessary.

UPDATE: LUNCH VISITS WITH STUDENTS

We welcome parents and special guests to join their child for lunch at school! To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, all visitors must check in at the front office upon arrival. Guests and students will sit together at our designated Guest Table*, reserved just for them- no additional students will join during the visit.

To help us prepare, we kindly ask that parents notify the classroom teacher and/or the front office ahead of time if they plan to join their child for lunch. Thank you for partnering with us to make these moments meaningful and secure!

* In alignment with our district visitor updates, we are no longer seating lunch guests with the classrooms. All lunch guests must sit at the designated Guest Table or in the LIbrary when class is not in session.

🌟 Meet Our 2026–2027 PRCC President

Please join me in welcoming Michelle Woidneck as our 2026–2027 PRCC President!

Michelle and her family have called the Paddock Road neighborhood home since 2019 and have proudly been part of our school community for the past five years. She and her husband, Patrick, have two children—James, who will be in first grade this year, and Ellie, who will be in fifth grade—as well as a beloved dog and cat.

Professionally, Michelle is a licensed psychologist in private practice at Woidneck Psychological, where she provides evidence-based therapy to individuals across the lifespan. Outside of work, she enjoys staying active, spending time outdoors, and escaping to the mountains whenever she can.

Michelle is excited to partner with families, staff, and students to make the 2026–2027 school year another outstanding year at Paddock Road. We are grateful for her leadership and willingness to serve our school community!
