Derby Board of Education Student Rep Takes Seat Derby Board of Education Student Rep Takes Seat

Please join us in congratulating Mac Gray, our new DHS Student Council President and Student Representative to the Board of Education! Mac attended his first Board of Education meeting in October and did a great job presenting a report to the board about what’s happening at DHS. As the student representative, Mac will continue to serve as a voice for the student body, sharing updates, accomplishments, and student perspectives on important school and district initiatives.

We are also incredibly proud of the work of Executive Board and our entire Student Council. Their willingness to share their voices, ideas, and talents helps make DHS a great place for our students. We appreciate their leadership and the positive impact they have on our school community! Congratulations, Mac, and thank you to our Student Council for all you do!

On October 9, Derby High School welcomed nearly 40 colleges, universities, technical schools, and military representatives for the annual College & Career Fair. Students had the opportunity to explore a wide range of post-secondary options, speak directly with admissions representatives, and learn about academic programs, extracurricular activities, and career pathways.

As part of the event, students completed career interest profiles and created college lists to plan for their futures. Students asked thoughtful questions to learn more about admissions, costs, academics, and campus life, including:

  • Admissions & Costs: “What are your admission requirements?” “Which tests are required?” “What financial aid or scholarships are available?”

  • Academic Environment: “How intense is the academic atmosphere?” “Are there honors programs or study abroad opportunities?” “What support services are available for students?”

  • Campus & Students: “What is the campus like?” “What clubs, activities, and athletic teams are available?” “What do freshmen say about their first year?”

The event was planned by our College & Career Counseling Center: Mrs. Ostrosky, School Counselor; Mr. Nutcher, School Counselor; Mr. Maldonado, Administrative Assistant; and Ms. Hoffman, College & Career Paraeducator. Many thanks to Mr. Saccu and the Derby Youth Bureau for supporting the program with table rentals and providing lunch for our visiting representatives.

The College & Career Fair provided an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with representatives, ask important questions, and plan for their next steps after high school. It’s a key part of DHS’s commitment to preparing students for college, career, and life success.

DHS Writing Center Students Selected to Present at UConn Conference DHS Writing Center Students Selected to Present at UConn Conference

Three DHS students, Kezia Amartey, Ava Umpierre, and Thalia Rumardo, were selected to present at the annual UConn Secondary School Writing Center Conference on Friday, October 16! After attending a national writing center conference last year, our students took the next step by submitting their own proposal to present this year. Their workshop focused on making the DHS Writing Center a welcoming and accessible space where all students feel comfortable asking for help. They shared their experiences as a new writing center and led discussions about reaching more students and creating a supportive environment that reflects our diverse school community.

This year’s conference theme, Subverting the Center, encouraged students and educators to rethink traditional approaches to writing support and explore new ways to make writing centers more inclusive and student-centered.

The Writing Center at DHS was launched last year by Mrs. Kristin Silvestri, DHS English Department Coordinator, 10th Grade English teacher, and AP English Literature teacher, The center gives students a place to build their writing skills and confidence with help from trained peer mentors. Any DHS student can sign up for a pass for support during Advisory with writing assignments, brainstorming ideas, organizing thoughts, or revising their work.

Kezia, Ava, and Thalia and the class returned from the conference with new ideas for building writers’ confidence, encouraging authentic student voice, and making writing support more accessible. We’re proud of them for representing DHS and helping our Writing Center continue to grow!

By Keith Abes

I come from a place of beautiful beaches with golden sand
Where clear blue waters glistens that stretch towards the horizon.
I am from a place where green gorgeous land lays
Where winds blow softly through blades of grass
And how nature thrives everywhere around me.

I am from forest that constantly flourish,
Where its full of trees that tower over houses and flowers that bloom,
Where sounds of birds fill the quiet void.
I come from blazing sunny days
And where tropical rains bring life to my homeland.
I come from a culture rich of traditions,
Where you are constantly exposed to respect, kindness, and family.

I come from a place where meals are shared and celebrations are enjoyed,
Where stories gets passed down through generations.
I come from a place where peoples smiles linger even through difficult moments.

NEW! Crime & Mystery English Elective NEW! Crime & Mystery English Elective

Derby High School has introduced a new English elective for juniors and seniors: Crime & Mystery! This course, which is taught by Ms. Borges, gives students the opportunity to explore the popular mystery and crime genre while strengthening their reading, critical thinking, and analytical skills in a fun and engaging way. Through suspenseful stories, unexpected twists, and clues hidden throughout the text, students learn to look closely at details, make predictions, analyze evidence, and develop theories about what really happened.

The class recently began reading One of Us Is Lying, a mystery centered on a death during a school detention, and students have been loving it! They recently started mapping out their own crime scene, bringing the story to life as they work to connect clues and piece the mystery together.

This new elective offers students a fresh way to experience English by connecting reading and analysis to a genre that keeps them curious, engaged, and eager to find out what happens next. With half the book still to go, there’s plenty more investigating ahead!

🎨 Celebrating Talent: Jackie Robinson Mural 🎨 Celebrating Talent: Jackie Robinson Mural

Mr. Piazza’s Social Studies classroom has a new addition thanks to the incredible artistic talent of Kiera Boyles ('27)! Kiera created a mural featuring Jackie Robinson, bringing history to life through her artwork and adding a great touch to the classroom. The mural is a perfect fit for Mr. Piazza, who is not only a sports fan, but has also taught our Sports & Society elective, where students explore the impact of sports on American society, including the role of race, culture, politics, and social change. Jackie Robinson’s legacy is an especially meaningful example of how sports can influence history far beyond the playing field.

Kiera has built an impressive foundation in art at DHS, completing courses including AP Studio Art 3D Art and Design, Ceramics & Sculpture I and II, Drawing and Painting, and Introduction to Art. We’re proud to see Kiera’s creativity and talent on display at DHS!

Be On the Look Out! Chicks Hatching This Week! Be On the Look Out! Chicks Hatching This Week!

DHS has a chick incubator set up in the main office, and the glass display in the hallway has become a baby nursery! Students have been stopping by throughout the day to check on the eggs and see what’s changing. We’re starting to notice some movement and tiny changes in the lines on the eggshells, so things are getting exciting!

We’re looking forward to meeting our baby chicks sometime this week! Stay tuned for updates as we get ready to welcome our newest little additions to DHS! 🐥

On October 13, 2026, Derby High School was proud to host representatives from the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA), including dozens of manufacturing professionals representing different areas of the industry. During the visit, DHS students showcased how they are developing the skills and knowledge to prepare for future careers in manufacturing in the Advanced Manufacturing program at DHS.

The Manufacturing program gives students the opportunity to earn college credits, industry-recognized credentials, and hands-on skills that can lead to high-paying, in-demand careers. Courses are taught right here at DHS by instructors from Housatonic Community College. Students earn credits towards high school graduation, and a transcript with up to 9 college courses.

The visit was a great opportunity to highlight our students’ talents, connect classroom learning with real-world careers, and showcase the exciting opportunities available through our Advanced Manufacturing program. Interested in learning more about the program? Reach out to the DHS Counseling Department or Mr. Abelli!

Prevention Corner: From the Derby Youth Bureau Prevention Corner: From the Derby Youth Bureau

By: John Saccu

Youth vaping continues to be a growing concern for schools, families, and communities nationwide. In 2025, Playbl, a research and prevention organization that provides data-driven education programs in schools and communities, released the findings of a national survey examining how schools and health departments are responding to youth vaping.

The survey included more than 100 organizations across 29 states and aimed to better understand the scope of youth vaping and identify effective paths forward for education and prevention.

The findings highlight the seriousness of the issue:

  • Nearly two-thirds of respondents identified youth vaping as a major public health crisis.
  • Three-fourths reported observing physical, emotional, or academic harm among students linked to vaping.
  • About half of respondents reported that students are vaping nicotine products, while nearly as many indicated that THC products are the most commonly vaped substances in their communities.

Respondents also identified key contributing factors such as peer pressure, social media influence, and parental behaviors, reinforcing that youth vaping is not just a school issue—it is a community-wide issue. The survey data further reveals that youth vaping is becoming increasingly complex, extending beyond nicotine to include cannabis and, in some cases, fentanyl. These findings underscore the urgent need for proactive prevention and intervention strategies that address both youth behavior and the environmental factors influencing vaping.

More information about the survey and Playbl’s prevention efforts can be found at www.playbl.com.

Warning Signs to Watch For

According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH), if any of the following statements

are true for your child, it may be time to consider additional support or a change:

  • I find myself reaching for my vape without thinking about it.
  • I drop everything to go out and get a vape.
  • I vape more before going into a situation where vaping is not allowed.
  • When I have not been able to vape for a few hours, the craving becomes difficult to deal with.

Early awareness, open communication, and community-based prevention efforts are key to protecting the health and well-being of our youth. The Derby Youth Service Bureau encourages families to have open conversations about vaping and seek support when needed. Prevention starts with awareness and community partnership.
