Updates for Stadium

LOTS of effort goes into just changing a light bulb at a football stadium. Heineken Electric came this week, with their very large crane (150 ft. crane) to get up this high to change and check the light bulbs in our stadium. Thanks so much for all the hard work.

Alex Nolte-Math Instructor/Coach

This week’s Spotlight is on Mr. Nolte. Mr. Nolte began his teaching career at Valley Heights in 1994. That makes this his 30 th year in education and his 30 th year at Valley Heights! He is a graduate of Onaga High School and Emporia State University. He has coached Junior High Football, Basketball and Track almost the entire 30 years. He has two children, Connor who is living and working in Arizona and Claire who is a sophomore at Kansas University. One of Mr. Nolte’s favorite memories at Valley Heights is the day he spent outside viewing the solar eclipse. What made it extra special was doing it with Connor and Claire and the students at Valley Heights! One of his current students’ favorite things to do is to look at

the 29 years of Junior High football pictures on his wall and try to find their father or an uncle in the pictures! For the parents that are reading this Mr. Nolte wanted to give a shout out and list some of the great mentors he had early in his teaching career and see if you remember or had some of these great teachers that used to teach at Valley Heights! They were Dan Palmateer, Larry Nolte, Barb Buck, Ann Walters, Crystal Gordan, Dixie Talbot, Phyllis Blaser, Jim Gould, Jim King, Alice King, Dave Crawford, Kathy Crawford, Doug Faught, Kim Oatney, Jan Pope, Dennis White and Susan Buck. And he said don’t forget the school secretary Judy Gunn and two of the original paras Gary Bargdill and Linda Johnson that set the standard for paras for years to come! If you had any of these people as your teachers that means you’re probably just as old or older than Mr. Nolte and at least one of these teachers influenced your life as much as his!

A Letter from Mr. Savage

As I mentioned last week the Kansas State High School Activities Association came out with their classifications for member schools and Valley Heights will remain in 2A. Now that this has been determined, we have been assigned to post-season competition. Our Lady Mustangs have been assigned to the Sub-State hosted by Alma-Wabaunsee and the cross country team members will run at Council Grove.

Speaking of cross country – our runners will be competing in the TVL league meet on October 12th. If you are planning on attending we would like you to know that they will be charging admission at the gate which is something new for the league contest. We have attached a flyer to this edition of the newsletter with admission prices listed. The TVL volleyball tournament will be hosted on October 14th at Washington County. We will share bracket information with you once it is posted.

Coach Trimble, Coach Broxterman and myself attended the KSHSAA sponsored meeting when the new football districts are announced. This information is shared with all Kansas high schools at the same time and from this information new football schedules are set for a two-year period. We have some familiar faces on our schedule and a mix of new faces on our fall schedule for 2024-2025! Our district foes will be Republic County, Bennington, Herington and Salina-Sacred Heart. D. West, Bennington and Herington are all making the move back to 11-Man football. Our schedule also includes D. West, Centralia, Onaga and Marion.

Congratulations to our 2023 Homecoming King, Mr. Kaison Bigham and 2023 Queen, Ms. Delana Murk, and all of our Homecoming Royalty! Thanks to Mrs. Parker and Student Council we had a fantastic week filled with excitement and fun! Daily Dress-Up Days, Bonfire, Spikefest, Powder Puff Football, Tailgating, Parade and the Homecoming Crowning and Dance filled out days and nights for the entire week! We would also like to thank our communities for supporting us with these activities!

Student Success Meetings were held on Monday and Wednesday nights this past week and we enjoyed meeting with those parents that attended. If you were unable to attend on those nights you can still visit with your child’s teachers by simply contacting the staff member via their school e-mail address. We are always willing to visit with you about your child’s progress!

Please remember that we have a 12:30 dismissal on October 13th! The staff will be working on entering the final grades for the first nine-week period and we will be sending out grade cards the following week!

Have a great week!
