What is Authentic Assessment?

Key Characteristics:

  • Real-world application:

Authentic assessments connect art making to practical, real-world scenarios or problems

  • Purposeful and meaningful:

These assessments should be designed to help students understand and apply concepts in a way that resonates with them

  • In-depth and complex:

Authentic assessments require students to use their knowledge and skills to complete complex tasks, allowing for different solutions and creative approaches

  • Assessment should be based on the student's actual art work, rather than on written exams or quizzes

Art Lab Understanding by Design | Project-based Learning | Process Art Lab Understanding by Design | Project-based Learning | Process

What is Understanding by Design?

Understanding by Design (UbD):

  • UbD is a curriculum design framework that focuses on backward design, starting with desired learning outcomes and working backward to create instruction and assessments
  • It involves identifying desired results (objectives and essential questions), determining acceptable evidence (assessments), and planning learning experiences and instruction
  • A key goal of UbD is to facilitate students' ability to transfer their learning to real-world situations
  • UBD is a widely used curriculum planning framework, helping educators create results-oriented curricula
