Shelf Life in the Hawks' Nest
Welcome Back, NES!
Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! One of my goals this year is to increase my professional development offerings for you all, so I'm going to be including some little snippets in our newsletters this year.
This edition of the newsletter has some tech tips, as well as library resources for you.
I also would love for you to share with me about upcoming units of study, themes, or topics of interest so I can integrate those into my library lessons where possible, as well as create book lists in Destiny as a resource for your and your students. Click the link below for a survey to sign up for research, collaborative projects, or if you'd like me to create a particular resource list or pull books on a topic for you. You can also let me know what sorts of training/PD/support I can provide in regards to better serving you and your students on information literacy. This feedback will help me provide the best possible experience for you and your readers, so thank you for taking a moment to do this!
REMINDER: The library schedule is at the bottom of this newsletter for your reference. Monday and Wednesday mornings are the best times to sign up for research projects and other collaborations, so fill out the form or come talk to me so we can get something awesome going to enhance your units of study!
Thanks for all you do. I look forward to collaborating with you in 2022-2023!
Emily

News Team is off and running!
A few NES news stats...
- Last year's news team had 27 members.
- This year's news team has 47 members! (We almost doubled our crew this year!)
- We currently have 83 subscribers. If YOU like and subscribe, and encourage our NES families to do the same, it will help grow our audience. These kiddos are REALLY excited to be "YouTubers", so numbers like that mean something to them, and your support is appreciated!
- Last year--news team began September 20th
- This year--news team began September 12th, starting over a week sooner with student anchors.
- Last year, our fifth graders spent roughly 85 hours creating and editing news content to produce roughly ten hours of pre-recorded news! This was a BIG "aha" moment for these kids, learning that content takes much longer to create than it takes for them to consume it.
Thanks so much for watching, supporting, and encouraging these team members, as well as sharing to help spread the word!

Tech Tidbits...
This is a GREAT way decrease your carbon footprint by using less paper/stickies, while also helping keep you on track and color-code different organizational areas of your life. (Love it!)
Here is a YouTube tutorial with lots of tips for getting started.
And finally...if you are not familiar with Matt Miller (the guy who does the "Ditch That Textbook" books, posts, resources), he is a fountain of techie knowledge, so I am sharing his "Learner Preferences" survey for you to share with students, helping both you and them determine how they learn best, which helps you customize the learning experience to meet their needs. Since we're a district that uses Google Tools, THIS LINK has tons of resources for different Google products, with lots of creative ways for kids to show what they know. Check it out!
