15 Summer Programs for High School Students in North Carolina
Summer programs are a great option for high school students because they involve guided instruction, organized project work, and opportunities to engage with faculty, instructors, and peers who share your interests. You may explore subjects such as science, engineering, writing, leadership, or the arts in settings that reflect college-level learning environments. These opportunities, often run by top colleges and respected organizations, are structured to provide practical skills and exposure to potential college majors.
North Carolina is home to universities like Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, and NC State, and the summer programs here often allow you to live on campus and experience college life. This experience includes college-level coursework, research opportunities, especially in fields like STEM, and career exploration.
Registration is now open for UCLA Arts High School Summer Institutes. These programs offer motivated high school students the opportunity to learn, create, and collaborate at one of the nation’s leading public universities. UCLA Arts High School Summer Institutes include five distinct programs—with both in-person and online options available—designed to help students: Our programs offer transformative experiences in architecture, studio arts, game and graphic design, AI, and emerging technologies, some of which students won’t find elsewhere: Share with your students and their families!
Want to hear directly from—and ask questions of—the directors and representatives of each program? Attend a virtual information session on: Thursday, March 19 6:30–7:15 p.m.

MARCH 13 (9-12) - Stossel Essay Contest
Think, Write, and Compete for Cash Prizes!
Each year, middle and high school students have the chance to make their case on big ideas — and compete for cash prizes. This year, we award over $12,000 to students.
Beyond the prizes, the contest helps strengthen research, critical thinking, and persuasive writing skills — abilities that will serve students in school and beyond. They can enter on their own, or teachers can assign the contest and earn rewards for participation.
Somewhere between "follow your passion" and "but what will you do with that degree?" is a conversation worth having, and our Guide to Performing & Visual Arts is a good place to start it.
Medical illustrator. Video game designer. UX researcher. These are real, in-demand careers that arts graduates actually land, and they're just a few of the paths our guide covers.
You'll also find real data on earning potential, tips on building a standout portfolio, advice on finding the right programs, and a breakdown of how to pay for it all.
ACT/SAT Resources (March 11)
All NC high school juniors take the ACT in the spring of their 11th grade year. Students are automatically registered for this test and it is given at their high school. Students who wish to take the ACT multiple times may register and pay for additional local ACT testing dates here. The SAT is not given in NHC schools. If you would like to take the SAT, you will have to do so on your own time. Register and pay for the SAT at this website on your own.
There are free test prep resources for both the ACT and SAT below.
Click the button above for instructions on how to create your account and access these free resources provided by NHCS.
Downloadable resources for each ACT section.

College Board has partnered with Schoolhouse.world, founded by Khan Academy® creator Sal Khan, to launch free, peer-led SAT tutoring, adding a new layer of support to its extensive suite of no-cost practice resources. Early pilot results point to increased confidence and a stronger growth mindset among participating students.
Summer Opportunities
APRIL 15 - (JUNIORS) The U.S. Military Academy at West Point Summer Leader Experience (SLE)
Led by current West Point cadets, Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) is a five-day immersion into a West Point cadet's academic, military, and social life. SLE is for rising high school seniors who are interested in learning more about West Point and the qualities required to succeed as a cadet.
SLE takes place the summer between your junior and senior year. High school juniors should apply between 15 February and 15 April of their junior year. To apply, complete the initial portion of the West Point application (Step 3 in our Steps to Admission) and then the SLE checklist.
At SLE, you will explore West Point from all angles, including our high-tech academic facilities, team-building athletic activities, and realistic military training. You'll also gain firsthand insight into the character, determination, commitment to excellence, and leadership skills expected of West Point cadets.
Dates for Upcoming Sessions
- Session 1: May 30-June 3, 2026
- Session 2: June 5-9, 2026
- Session 3: June 11-15, 2026
An SLE application doubles as the first step of a West Point application. However, please note that an SLE application nor attending SLE obligates you to complete a West Point application or attend West Point.
