Washington School Mission Statement
At Washington Elementary School, we foster a student-centered community where all students are inspired to discover their own passions, accept and appreciate the differences in one another, and make reflective and responsible choices that will make the world a better place.
The Month Ahead
This month starts off with Staff Appreciation Week. We hope you will join in on thanking the WES staff for their unwavering support for our students and school community. Thank you to the many families who sent in donations to celebrate out staff!
May also is a time to assess what our students have learned. NJSLA testing will occur for all 3,4,5th graders. Good luck to those students!
After testing, we get to really enjoy our time at school with an Art Show, Choir, Band, & Orchestra Concert, Fun Day, and field trips! Our fifth graders will also take trips to their future middle schools and learn about what they have to offer.
Please see the "Save the Date" notices below for upcoming events.
NJSLA Testing
Students in grades 3-5 will take the NJ Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) May 6-4. These standardized tests assess student achievement of the NJ Student Learning Standards.
May 6-9, Grades 3-5: Math & ELA
May 13-14, Grade 5: Science
May 13-17: makeups
You can access more information at the NJ Assessments Resource Center page for parents/families.
April Recap
Around the World at W.E.S.
Thank you to all the families that were able to join us for our first "Around the World at WES" event. We learned about 16 different countries from around the world, ate international food, and had some performances representing various cultures. Over 100 families joined us for this inaugural event.
Congratulations to Mrs. Mendoza and the Washington Equity Committee on organizing an amazing evening!
Way to go Tigers! Washington School raised the second most amount of money out of ALL the Edison Township Schools for the Edison Teacher Education Association (ETEA) charitable fundraising campaign. The ETEA congratulations and thanks all of the WES community for their ongoing support!
Somerset Patriots-Most Improved Student Night
Thank you to the Washington staff for nominating students from their classes for the Somerset Patriots 'Most Improved' Night. Students came onto the field to announce their name, grade, and school, and were treated to the baseball game with their families.
Solar Eclipse
April 8th was a day our students will never forget. We dismissed school just as the solar eclipse was peaking in NJ. Although a bit cloudy, many of our families enjoyed using their solar glasses and taking a look up in the sky. Our students learned all about the event and even made some representations in Art class.
Earth Day
Each year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things like pollution and littering. Our Student Council participated by picking up litter and cleaning up our school grounds during their recess times. Thank you to them for making our world a happier, healthier place to live.
Take Your Child to Work Day
Washington School welcomed 44 of our staff members children to join their parents on this April 25th. Since 1992, students (originally just girls) have been joining their parents for the day and getting a glimpse in to the working world.
If your child joined you that day, please send in a letter from your company to excuse the absence.
ESL Club Trip to the State Theatre
Our English As a Second Language Club students and Advisors were treated to a show at the State Theatre in New Brunswick. We are thankful that the Edison District was able to provide these students with this opportunity.
