Principal Notes

CMS Families,

It's been a great week at CMS! Please remind your child to wear their school issued ID everyday. If they have lost theirs or need a replacement, the cost is $5. We have been giving far too many temporary IDs on a daily basis. Please see the paragraph below regarding adjustments to the dress code. Our students have done a great job since returning from the break but as the weather starts to warm we expect students to be in compliance. The adjustments to the dress code should make this easier. As always, thank you for support, we have an incredible school!

DRESS CODE UPDATE!!!

GCISD Families,

As we continue to work together to create an environment where students can thrive academically and socially, we recognize the challenges of balancing modern-day fashion trends with our district dress code standards.

In response to your feedback and after carefully reviewing dress code policies across neighboring districts, we are making an update to our guidelines to better align with current practices while ensuring that they are still appropriate for a school setting.

We have revised the item regarding the length of shorts to the following guideline: Shorts, including athletic shorts, must extend past the student's knuckles naturally and must remain visible when standing.

This has been updated in our online dress code document and in the Student Handbook (English) | (Spanish).

Our goal is that this adjustment is both clear and practical, and our administrators are committed to upholding these expectations. Thank you for your partnership and support as we continue to work together in the best interest of our students.

A Note from the Nurse

On Tuesday, January 28th, 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys will participate in a spinal screening. This is a noninvasive screening that helps detect Scoliosis. It does require screeners to look at the spine so 7th grade girls should make sure they wear appropriate undergarments. Although this is a state required screening, parents can choose to opt-out by emailing me prior to Tuesday morning. It will then be up to parents to have their child screened by their physician. Have a great weekend!

A note from the Assistant Principals

We want to take a moment to praise our students for their conduct during STAAR Interims last week. We are so proud of how seriously students took the test, and this data will help inform our next steps as we near STAAR testing in April.

Biology Interims will run during their classes Tuesday, January 28th - Wednesday, January 29th.

Interim makeups will occur on Wednesday, January 29th (Reading) and Thursday, January 30th (Math and Biology). We will pull the students who still need to take these exams in the morning on these days.

Thank you so much for your support and partnership!

Librarian's Corner

Thank you to the families who have already donated to our book drive. So far families have donated 13 books and $200 towards the drive which is a great start! Please consider making a donation if you are able. The drive runs through February.

Love Our School Library

We are holding a digital book drive to purchase new books for the CMS library.

The campus budget for library books will only allow us to buy 25 books this year. A lot of that will have to be used to replace books that are lost or damaged leaving very little to purchase new selections.
In order to supplement the budget we are running a digital book drive where families can purchase books for the library. The books on this list are books that the library does not have in our collection. Many are new books from popular series and other new publications. They have all been reviewed and approved to be added to GCISD libraries.
We are requesting families use this site to donate books because this is a library book vendor and these books are intended for library use. They have more durable binding that holds up to repeated use, and they are already processed for our library with protective covers and stickers so when they arrive they can go straight on the shelves.

Here is the link to purchase books LINK

AVID INFO

Focus: Time Management/Organization

Strategy: Planner/Agenda

Why: Life Skill of Task Management

Please ask your child to show you their planner for the day or week!

We are striving to teach ALL students at CMS not only to write in their planner, but to “mark it up”.

Students are being asked to make a system of strike throughs, checks, or some type of symbol to show that an assignment has been submitted. Then a circle/highlight for work that needs to be completed from the day.

Consider talking about how you keep up with your day to day tasks!
