KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
As we get settled into a new school year, we would like to inform you about three different programs that Kodiak Middle School offers to help keep students on a track for success:
- Reading Lab
- Math Lab
- Learning Lab
Reading Lab or Math Lab will address unfinished learning in either of these content areas. MAP assessment data is used to identify students with learning gaps. Identified students and families will be notified of this opportunity before enrollment. Each of these labs would take the place of a 9-week elective.
The Learning Lab is utilized for students with one or more failing grades. Students with failing grades will be placed in Learning Lab during their 7th period elective until they complete the required work to get their grade up to passing. Students will return to their scheduled elective once their grades are back up to passing.
We would also like to send a friendly reminder that here in Kodiak, the weather can be fairly unpredictable. However, on most days, we do continue to have outdoor recess year-round if possible. Please send your students to school with appropriate gear for the cold/rainy/snowy weather that sometimes catches us by surprise. It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. If the weather is too extreme at recess time, of course, we will have indoor recess.
Sincerely,
Rena Rankin, Principal
Judith Bruns, Assistant Principal
This is where we will have a quick reference for the upcoming week. More info is usually listed lower in the newsletter, if needed.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!
COOKIE DOUGH SALES PACKETS ASSEMBLY
The KMS PTSA is getting ready to kick off our annual Cookie Dough Fundraiser! It's the only fundraiser we do all year, and it helps pay for all the fun things like Friday Night Lives, Popcorn and Smoothie Days, Teacher Conference Dinners, and things like Middle School Beautification and Upgrades.
We could really use some help from 8th graders! On Monday, Sep 16, we will be in the KMS Library to assemble the Cookie Dough Sales Packets that will be given out the following week. We have 2 flyers that need to be placed in the envelopes, instructions glued to the front, and then sorted into each Advisory Teacher's stack. It's an easy project, but it takes a long time for one person to do, so that's where you come in!
If you'd like to earn Citizenship Project Volunteer Hours, see Mrs. Norton or Mrs. Kim to sign up. It should only take 1-1.5 hours after school on Monday 9/16. We would like to get 4 to 8 students to help out.
Thank you so much!
STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Please join us if you can to hear about our plans this year, Cookie Dough fundraising, volunteer opportunities, and a little budget talk. :)
Hope you'll be there!
