Message from Ms. Joanna Message from Ms. Joanna

Dear PS 107 Families,

We’ve officially wrapped up New York State testing, and we couldn’t be prouder of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders! Over the past several weeks, they tackled the NYS ELA, Math, and (for 5th grade) Science tests with focus and determination. Our 4th and 5th grade students have even been practicing typing skills throughout the year to prepare for the computer-based format!

Our students were incredibly well-prepared thanks to the care and skill of their teachers, and we are especially grateful to Assistant Principal Rinah Fernandez-Vasquez, who single handedly organized every aspect of state testing. From coordinating schedules to troubleshooting tech, she managed this enormous undertaking on top of her many other responsibilities. Thank you, Rinah, for making it all run so smoothly!

ART DAY + GARDEN OPENING = JOY

What a beautiful day we had last Saturday, May 10th, for our annual Art Day and official Garden Opening! The weather was sunny (if a bit windy!), and PS 107 was buzzing with creativity and community.

A huge thank you to our Art Day parent leads Sarah Warner, Kate Wilkes, and Jiaomin Ni for organizing such a fabulous event, and to our Parent DEI Team for leading the creation of a powerful, student-made banner now hanging across from the cafeteria (pictured to the right). This banner was inspired by an incident earlier this year at a public school in Idaho — and our students responded with hope, art, and community. Deep thanks to Christine Canedo-Pullan and Carolyn Vadino for guiding this important project.

Meanwhile, in our newly transformed garden, families delighted in meeting our PS 107 chickens and exploring the thriving green space. Our official Garden Opening was a true celebration, made possible by our remarkable PE teacher Ali Annunziato, who built the garden from the ground up, with a lot of support from the Garden Committee, led by parent Zoe Young. We are so proud of this space — a living classroom full of joy, care, and learning.

MAY IS JEWISH AMERICAN + AAPI HERITAGE MONTH

At PS 107, we believe in honoring the many cultures and identities that make up our school community.

This month, we’ve been celebrating Jewish-American Heritage Month with school-wide announcements, hallway posters featuring Jewish-American heroes (including our very own staff and students!), and a Jewish baked goods giveaway at tomorrow morning’s drop off, from 8 to 8:30 am. Thank you to our wonderful Jewish American Heritage Month parent leads Alyse Dosik, Lindsay Robinson, Alina Hurtado, Alex Budnitsky, Doug Schneider, and Joni Kletter for coordinating this meaningful celebration!

We’re also recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month throughout May. Our hallways are filled with beautiful posters created by our AAPI affinity group about our students’ AAPI family histories. We’ll begin regular announcements next week — and don’t miss the upcoming AAPI Snack Sale on Wednesday, May 28th! Big thanks to our AAPI month parent leads Sowoon Song, Neeta Menon, Nisha Aoyama, Jenny Mai, Avon Khowong, Jocelyn Fung, and Yumi Kobayashi for organizing these events (and special thanks to Paul Ryan for writing the AAPI Heritage Month newsletter!).

SAFETY DRILL REMINDER

Our third evacuation (fire) drill of the spring semester will take place on Wednesday, May 21st at 9:00 am. After this, we will complete one more required evacuation drill and one soft lockdown drill before the school year ends. As always, these drills are conducted with care and clarity so that students feel safe, informed, and prepared.

Though the skies are gray today, with state testing behind us and the warm weather approaching, we’re savoring these last several weeks of the school year — packed with learning, community, and celebration. Thank you, as always, for being such engaged and supportive partners with all that we do at PS 107.

Warmly,

Ms. Joanna

AND THE WINNER IS.....

The lucky classes that won the pizza party for successful 95% (or above) completion of the NYC school surveys this year are:

4-308 (Ms. Marybeth & Ms Sarah) with a 100% completion rate!

4-307 (Ms. Jen & Ms. Renee) with a 96% completion rate!

As a school, we increased our completion rate to 70.1%!

That means that 377 out of our 534 families completed the school surveys this year! THANK YOU 💛

REMINDERS & HELPFUL TIPS

NYC SCHOOLS ACCOUNT - NYCSA

This is a NYC DOE parent account for students grades K - 12 that enables parents/guardians to view all of their children’s records - grades, fitnessgrams, attendance, your child’s DOE email, etc. At least one parent/guardian will need to have access to this account.

We strongly encourage all parents/guardians to have their own account. Any parent with children in grades k-5 who does not have their own NYSCA , please contact nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov for instructions and your unique account creation code.

MAKING SCHOOL DAY DISMISSAL PICK-UP CHANGES

If there is a change to your child’s dismissal, please be sure to note the change on the Daily Dismissal form in Operoo. If it is a same day change, please email your child’s teacher and cc Nadia at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov in addition to making any changes on the Daily Dismissal form. You can also contact the main office at 718-499-2054.

MAKING AFTERSCHOOL DISMISSAL CHANGES

If you need to add a new pick up person for your child in afterschool, please make sure to update this on 6Crickets (Click Here). Afterschool and PS 107 partner in many ways, but not with our information applications. They can't access Operoo and we can't access 6Crickets.

Thank you for your assistance in ensuring your child's safety 😊

IDENTIFICATION

When entering the school building you must present your ID to the safety agent when signing in.

One helpful tip is to take a picture of your id. Often, we will have our phone with us even if we don’t have our id. This way, you always have it handy :)
