Head Cheetah Message Head Cheetah Message

Families,

This week was full of celebrations! Not only did we recognize School Custodian and Cafeteria Staff Appreciation Day, but the EHPS Employee Of The Month, and the EHPS Paraeducator Of The Year were named; and they are BOTH members of the Memorial School staff. (See below.) We couldn’t be more proud!

Additionally, next week we’ll recognize School Nurse Appreciation Day on Wednesday, along with Teacher Appreciation WEEK all week long! So please keep the gratitude flowing by continuing to recognize all of the important members of our school community! Each staff member is needed and valued; and we’re grateful to have a team of individuals who truly care about our students' growth, safety, and well-being.

Best,

Joey

Safety Concerns At Dismissal

Now that the weather is improving, and we are seeing an increased number of families choosing to linger in our dismissal area, or stroll over to Seamster Park, we want to reiterate that safety is our NUMBER ONE priority at Memorial School. As a reminder, if you are signing out your student from the pick-up area, please ask your student to remain at your side until you’ve reached your vehicle. We are seeing many students wandering, unattended, across the parking lot. We are also seeing students engaging in play with friends, and the playfulness is inadvertently spilling over into the flow of traffic. We love to see our learners having fun, but not at the risk of their safety! Additionally, M&J has reported that students and adults are crossing through the bus lane, between buses, while the buses are running. This is not permitted. If we see this happening, we will ask the individual(s) to stop. Unfortunately, due to the size of the buses, we often don’t see this until the individual has already passed through. Please help us keep our community safe!

Paraeducator Of The Year

Therese Calos is this year’s Paraeducaotor Of The Year for East Hampton Public Schools! Therese supports students at Memorial School in grades one and two. She is an incredibly hard working member of our school community, who develops strong connections with her students, and goes above and beyond to help our learners feel successful and confident! We are so lucky that she’s a member of our team! Congratulations, Therese!

Employee Of The Month

Memorial’s very own Kalilah Dyer is the April Employee Of The Month! Kalilah is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who is devoted to ensuring that all students are successful. Kalilah is a kind, hard working, flexible professional who is always willing to think creatively in order to solve problems. She is an asset to our school community, and is incredibly deserving of this recognition.

Library News

Hi Cheetah families!

Throughout March and the first part of April, all grade levels participated in our March Madness: Tournament of Books! We were excited to announce the winner right before break. Yoshi’s Big Swim: One Turtle's Amazing Journey Home by Mary Wagley Copp was named Memorial School’s book of the year!

In April we celebrated School Library Month. Memorial readers had a great time participating in our book themed guessing game all month long. Book title riddles and book character silhouettes were set up in the library and in the main lobby for readers to test their knowledge.

See below for grade level classroom expectations

  • PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of dogs and cats; and dragons during the month of April.

  • Kindergarten has started reading a Memorial favorite, Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Viorst. We have also done a lesson around April’s theme “imagination”. Learners had fun using their imaginations to create a variety of drawings out of ordinary shapes after reading the book, What to do with a Box by Jane Yolen. After break we also used non-fiction text to learn about trees. I am sure you saw all our great looking fact trees coming home! Additionally, students have been showing a lot of imagination designing with our pixel blocks (Bloxels).

  • First grade students have been immersed in two different chapter books. We have finished Roscoe Riley: Never Glue Your Friends to Chairs by Katherine Applegate, and have started Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride by Kate DiCamillo. Additionally, students have been showing a lot of imagination designing with our pixel blocks (Bloxels).

  • Second graders are enjoying the book, The Sword in the Tree by Clyde Robert Bulla. Additionally, students have been showing a lot of imagination designing with our pixel blocks (Bloxels).

  • Third graders celebrated National Poetry month by making poetry journals. After making their journals, they listened to a variety of poetry, including haikus, limmericks, acrostics, and concrete poems. Students wrote and shared their own poems, as well. Concrete poetry, where the poem takes the shape of its subject, and acrostic poetry, in which each line begins with a letter spelling out the subject, were particularly popular with our third grade poets. Spring is the perfect season for poetry, and as students bring home their poetry journals, I hope they will continue to be inspired by this beautiful season!

Please let us know if your child is diagnosed with any illness or injury (such as strep, flu, pink eye, fracture/broken bone, lice, pneumonia, covid, etc.) as the nurse office tracks illnesses and sends notification letters home if there are 2 or more cases in a specific classroom. Please be specific with any of the symptoms your child is experiencing.

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough

  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)

  • Mild headache and/or stomachache

  • Fatigue

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May only return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)

  • Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)

  • Diarrhea (may return to school after 24 hours since last episode)

  • Chills

  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches

  • Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough

  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

Please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently

  • Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth

  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Please send in a copy of the doctor’s clearance, as needed. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.

Medications

Every medication that is brought into school requires a “Medication Authorization” form to be signed by the student’s doctor and parent/guardian and the medication in original packaging with prescription label is to be brought in by a parent/guardian, not in the child’s backpack. No child may carry their own medications at the Elementary level. Please use a large ziplock bag for the medication plus the medication order, and label the bag with your child’s name before dropping off. Any controlled medications will need to be counted and signed off with the RN and parent so please allow for a few extra minutes at drop off.

Please note: COUGH DROPS count as medications and are not allowed in school. All over-the-counter medications also need a medication order from your provider.

Food

We have several students with severe food allergies, therefore we highly recommend non food items to share for birthday celebrations. We ask for at least 48 hours advance notice. A great resource for allergy free snacks is the Safe Snack guide at https://snacksafely.com/safe-snack-guide/

Health Concerns

If your child has a new health concern which you would like to speak to the nurse about e-mail kwilliams@easthamptonct.org and mlemire@easthamptonct.org at any time.

If you have any specific concerns that arise during the school year (such as stitches, concussions, broken bones/fractures, etc) it is best that you send in a doctor’s note with dates, guidelines and restrictions, so we can all be on the same page and keep your child safe.

Phone Numbers/Contact information

Please make sure to update cell phone numbers and make sure mailboxes are not full. We call home and use ParentSquare for notifying parents and it is essential that we are able to contact you in case your child is ill, hurt or needs to be picked up from school or in case of an emergency.

Respectfully,

Safe School Climate Safe School Climate

The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.

Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

Please note

When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
