"Why Catholic Schools Keep Fighting Over LGBT Questions"
with Eve Tushnet
On Monday, March 17 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM Without Exception will host Eve Tushnet, author of Gay and Catholic and co-founder of Building Catholic Futures, for a presentation and conversation on "Why Catholic Schools Keep Fighting Over LGBT Questions."
Specifically designed for Catholic school personnel, this event will begin by exploring the conflicts among stakeholders in Catholic education. Eve will then identify four starting points, or "lenses" we bring to these conversations, each of which have characteristic insights and weaknesses. Conflict happens when people seek to impose one lens and reject another; conflict can be transformed when we acknowledge some truth in another person's lens. Eve will present work based on interviews with Catholic school teachers, administrators, alumni, and parentsβall people of goodwill, but with very different starting points. We will end with plenty of time for open questions and conversation with David and Eve.
This event is free and will run without any funding. Only water and small snack packs will be provided, so please plan to eat before arriving. Information on location, parking, etc. will be sent to you after you register (our host will be in a Boston neighborhood south of the Mass Pike between Routes 128 and 93).
π Registration is required for attendance π
And also ...
- The Greater Boston LGBTQIA Catholic Collaborative invites you to an evening of relaxation, socializing, and storytelling on Friday, March 14 from 6:30 - 9:00 PM at St. Cecilia Parish (18 Belvidere St., Boston MA, 02115). The event will begin with folks sharing their sacred stories, music, and art, and the rest of the evening will be for socializing and creating community.
- Parents of children who identify as LGBT are invited to join the Family Life team of the Archdiocese of Boston as we explore questions in a guided and respectful conversation with Eve Tushnet, co-founder of Building Catholic Futures. When a person shares that they identify as LGBT, the parent(s) may feel overwhelmed with feelings, questions, and concerns for their child regardless of the childβs age. As they continue to love and walk alongside their children, the parent(s) may question what love requires, how to hold on to their faith without alienating their family, or how God is working in their experience. Eve will speak from her 20+ years of experience mentoring and accompanying people with same-sex attraction and their families. This gathering will run from 7:00-8:30 PM at the Sullivan Center at St. Camillus in Arlington and include prayer and small group discussion. RSVP is optional yet encouraged so we can plan accordingly.
- St. Leonard of Port Maurice (320 Hanover St., Boston) will host Eve Tushnet on Wednesday, March 19 at 7:00 PM. Eve's topic is βGay and Catholic: Stories of Conversion and Vocation." The talk, followed by Q&A, will begin immediately after the usual weekly Adoration and Confession. If you have any questions, send them to eve@buildingcatholic.org . And please do share these events with anyone you know who may be interested!
- There will be a Transgender Day of Visibility Interfaith Service on Sunday, March 30 from 2:00-3:00 PM at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church (28 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill, MA 02467). This event will include prayer, music, and reflections with many faith communities. All are welcome!
