School Board Approves the 2022-2023 School Calendar

It is hard to believe, but this year is quickly drawing to a close. This means preparations are well under way for the 2022-2023 school year. The school board approved the district calendar for next year at its April meeting. The first day for students is set for August 29, 2022 and the last day is set for June 1, 2023. Commencement returns to Star Lake Commencement returns to Star Lake

With most of the Covid-related restrictions lifted, the decision has been made to return to Star Lake for our graduation ceremonies. Thanks to the generosity of Live Nation, the use of the facility is being donated and we are appreciative of this gesture. In the coming weeks, Mr. Fadden will be providing more specific information related to end-of-year events for seniors.

***It is noted that the return of more restrictive Covid-related processes and procedures may impact our plans, but we are hopeful this will not happen.

Transition Planning for Special Education Students

Our Special Education Department has created an informational session aimed at helping parents of our special education students navigate transition services. Parents of special education students in the middle and high school are encouraged to attend.

Title I Parent Survey for parents of BAEC Students

As many of you know, our elementary center is a Title I school. Simply put, this means that the school district receives federal funding to support programs in the elementary center that are designed to help children meet the state content and performance standards in reading, language arts, and mathematics. So that we can assess how we are doing, we ask the parents of our elementary students to consider completing our annual survey. This survey may be found by clicking: https://bit.ly/2122TitleISurvey

Thank you for taking the time to help us.

FCCLA and HOPE Club Field Trip

Mrs. Bohley and Mrs. Froats accompanied the FCCLA and Hope Club on a field trip to Meadowcroft this week. Students explored, looking for artifacts and tools from various historical periods. The pictures below show how engaging the experience was.

The 5th grade students were wrapping up their exploration unit this week. As a culminating project, each student was randomly assigned a 1400s European explorer to research. The took what they learned and created a tri-fold, wrote letters of request, created timelines, made a silhouette of their explorer, wrote a log in the first person voice of the explorer, and so much more. The final piece was an oral presentation given by each student to their classmates. Below are just a few pictures from these presentations.

Kindergarten Registration News Kindergarten Registration News

It is not too late to register your child(ren) for kindergarten for next school year. Parents/Guardians may call the elementary center office at 724-947-8150 to begin the process, or they may begin the process online by clicking HERE. Once the process is initiated and we receive the necessary information, an educational screening will be scheduled for your child(ren). The screenings will be held on May 17th and May 18th. While there will be opportunities to register and be screened over the summer months, we encourage parents/guardians to register their child(ren) prior to the end of this school year. We look forward to welcoming the newest Blue Devils to the elementary center family!

A reminder...

We remind students, employees, parents, guardians, and community members that smoking, the possession or use of alcohol or other drugs, and the possession of weapons on school grounds, including outdoor athletic areas, by any individual, is prohibited. These acts are subject to police action and must also be reported to the Department of Education.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO ENTER A SCHOOL BUS WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION

Student and employee safety is extremely important to us. We are constantly looking for ways to make our schools, school grounds, and property safe for all. Recently, we ordered signage that will be placed on all of our school busses, warning that unauthorized boarding will be subject to criminal prosecution. This is not something new, it is simply something we are creating a greater awareness of.

According to the Pennsylvania Crimes Code:

ยง 5517. Unauthorized school bus entry. (a) Offense defined.--A person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official with intent to commit a crime or disrupt or interfere with the driver or a person who enters a school bus without prior authorization of the driver or a school official who refuses to disembark after being ordered to do so by the driver commits a misdemeanor of the third degree. (b) Notice.--A school district may place a notice at the entrance of the school bus that warns against unauthorized entry.

Buildings and Grounds Concern Form

Our school district prides itself on providing the best possible learning environment for our students, and school buildings and other facilities that can be a source of pride for the community. We are constantly monitoring the conditions of our schools, athletic complexes and other district-owned property but sometimes we miss things. You can help us by completing this form when you notice something that you think needs our attention. It can be something as basic as noticing that there is a light out in our parking areas, or that the trash receptacles at the baseball field need emptied. Just like you have for your home, we have a running list of items that need our attention. These items get prioritized and acted upon. We may already know about the issue you raise, but if we don't, we can't prioritize it until we do. We are all in this together and your input is greatly appreciated.
