Hello Shorewood Families and Friends,

We host our first assembly in two years next week! It truly feels like we are returning, piece by piece, to some normalcy. The Ballet Folklorico will perform for us in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. We are all really looking forward to it.

National Coming Out Day is also next week on Tuesday. I included information about our Welcoming Schools program below. It is something we are especially proud of and I encourage you to read more about it and explore the included links.

Have a wonderful weekend!

In partnership,

Anne Gillespie

Principal

Welcoming Schools at Shorewood

Welcoming Schools is the most comprehensive bias-based bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+ and gender inclusive professional development training, lesson plans, booklists and resources specifically designed for educators and youth-serving professionals. Our program uses an intersectional, anti-racist lens dedicated to actionable policies and practices. We uplift school communities with critical tools to embrace family diversity, create LGBTQ+ and gender inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying, and support transgender and non-binary students.

Shorewood is very proud to be 1 of just 18 schools in the country to be a Welcoming Schools Seal of Excellence School!

While we specifically honor days such as National Coming Out Day, we also take a comprehensive approach to incorporating the Welcoming School's philosophy into everything we do from policies and professional development to lessons and resources.

If you have any questions about Welcoming Schools, we are very happy to meet with you! Please reach out to your child's teacher or Ms. Gillespie.

Please also see MMSD's Welcoming Schools resource page.

Updates from the Health Office

Updated ACL Covid Testing hours at Shorewood.

M-F 12:15-3:15.
You must complete the one time registration in the new Covid Connect 2.0 system. Instructions for Covid Connect registration

ACL will perform a Rapid antigen test first. If this test is negative but the person does have symptoms of Covid, a confirmatory PCR will also be sent. Students may return to school with a pending PCR as long as symptoms are mild, the student can mask, and they are fever free for 24 hours without medication.

Free home tests available from the WI Department of health, order your test kits here: https://www.sayyescovidhometest.org/ . Insurance companies are now also covering 8 tests per member per month at no cost to you, simply present your insurance pharmacy card to your local pharmacy such as Walgreens or CVS.

Please reach out to the Shorewood Health Office if you have any questions, 608-204-1204 or email the School Nurse at lgmccluskey1@madison.k12.wi.us

Welcome to our New Specials Teachers!

I want to extend a warm welcome to our new staff in some of our specials classes! We have Ms. Weinhold in Art, Mr. Lynch in Art, Ms. Hoeksema in REACH, and Mr. Kraemer in Gym. Being a smaller school, we have partial allocations of most of our specials classes. We are very fortunate to be able to partner with other MMSD elementary schools in sharing specials teachers and finding great candidates interested in part-time schedules.

If you are interested in meeting with any of our specials teachers, I encourage you to do so during our upcoming parent-teacher conferences!
