Neighborhood Visit... Neighborhood Visit...

I enjoyed a delightful time with Sully, Lennon, Lewis, Mia, Ava and their families! Thanks to Sully’s grandparents for attending the Costello Auction, bidding on this opportunity and sharing this experience with the Auction table-mates!! We read stories, played games and laughed a lot! Thanks for the pizza and cookies!! Our Costello community is THE BEST!!

Principals for a Day... Principals for a Day...

Ms. Ford and Ms. Kennedy had a packed and exciting schedule last Thursday as our Principals for a Day! They started the morning by leading school-wide announcements, then headed to Central Office for meetings with Employee Services and the superintendent. There, they practiced important soft skills like handshakes, eye contact, and professional conversation.

They represented Costello beautifully and showed great promise as future leaders. Later in the day, they spread kindness by delivering cookies and treats to students and staff, thanking everyone for their hard work this year. A quick stop at Wendy’s for lunch added to the fun!

It was so nice having their help around the building. A heartfelt thank you to the Ford and Kennedy families for your generous auction donation that made this experience possible!

Superintendent for a Day! Superintendent for a Day!

There were two new bosses in the Central Office last week as Costello students Caleb and Trey took over as Superintendents for the Day! They met many new people, dropped in on a bond project meeting, visited Larson and enjoyed lunch. In the afternoon they visited the preschool, attended a principal meeting, checked out the bus garage, and more! Thank you Dr. Machesky and the Richeson & Roenicke Families for supporting our Costello Auction!

1st Grade Music Program... 1st Grade Music Program...

Our first-grade music program was an absolute delight, so much after and joy! The students did a fantastic job having fun while showcasing what they’ve been learning about steady beats and musical foundations. They even got families involved, making it an interactive and memorable experience for all.

Thank you to all the families who joined us last week to celebrate their hard work—and a big shoutout to Ms. Scarnecchia for putting together such a joyful and engaging performance. Great job, everyone!

Mr. Myrick needs your help! Select the game that you want to work. Field day starts at 1:30 P.M.

5th Grade Challenge... 5th Grade Challenge...

As part of the 5th Grade Celebration on June 6th we want to highlight the AMAZING experiences that our 5th graders have had during their time at Costello. Who better to tell this story than the 5th graders. This group has so much personality, confidence and talent, I can't wait to see what they come up with. Click or copy and paste link below for LENGTHY details. Though some class time may be available to work on this, this is primarily an "at home" project. I will be talking with the students about this project sometime this week.

NOT ALL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE SELECTED

Hard Work Pays Off... Hard Work Pays Off...

We are incredibly proud of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders for giving their best effort on the M-STEP test. Their perseverance and determination stood out throughout the testing!

Although we originally planned to celebrate with a rock wall climb, a hydraulic issue meant we had to pivot. Thankfully, we had an exciting mega obstacle course ready to go—and it turned out to be a big hit! Lots of smiles and laughter!

A huge thank you to our parents and teachers for your ongoing support. Your encouragement and high expectations helped our students stay motivated and give their all.

Well done, everyone!

To celebrate the culmination of their animal research writing unit, our third graders hosted an engaging event for parents and other grade levels. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and it was heartwarming to see older students reminiscing about this same project and the joy it brought them in years past.

A big thank you to our amazing third grade teachers, Mrs. Dabrowski, Ms. McClure, and Mrs. Tessoff, for creating this special tradition that everyone looks forward to. The quality of the student writing was exceptional, and it was clear that each student took great pride in their work. Well done, third grade, you made us proud!

The 4th Annual Larson Celebration of Learning is back! I was hoping that you could include the following message, graphic and video link (recap from 2024) in your weekly newsletter leading up to our event, May 28th. This is geared toward 5th graders and their families (incoming Larson Class of 2032), but really is open to anyone. Thanks so much for your help sharing (advertising) this with your families as we are excited to share all the great experiences students can be part of at Larson.

As your 5th grader prepares to transition from elementary to middle school, come check out a great event at Larson Middle School, May 28th from 6:00-8pm. The Larson Celebration of Learning event will be taking place where students showcase their learning stories and experiences that they have been part of at Larson. Students from 6th-8th grade are excited to share their experiences with the incoming class of 2032, their families, and the community. This will be an open house format, so attend anytime between 6:00-8:00pm. There will be main presenters, open house learning stories, a fine arts display, music, food and so much more. Mark it down on your calendar and the Larson family is excited to see you! Check out the video link to see an overview of our celebration from 2024.

Costello Fair! Costello Fair!

Who had fun at the Costello Fair on Saturday??!! These memories will last a lifetime! The Costello Fair only happens because of the tremendous teamwork of our Fair Chairs, Melanie Lynam Harper & Jenni Brozowski!! They rallied the volunteers and organized all of the behind the scenes work to make this event happen. CONGRATULATIONS on yet another wonderfully successful Costello Fair. The smiling faces is why they do this!!! On behalf of the students, staff, PTO and parents THANK YOU for all of your hard work!!

To Keri Elliott & Kali Schmitz, thank you for taking care of the fair baskets and tickets, so much time and energy!

Keri Elliott, Melanie Lynam Harper, & Jenni Brozowski are all outgoing 5th grade families. Thank you for your dedication to our school over the years! Oh, and let's not forget the family. Keith Harper has done his share of fairs, but today he had to get a crew together to lift up a car that was stuck (you can ask him the rest of the details!!!)

To all of the families, staff and students that stepped up to volunteer, THANK YOU for saying yes! We really have something special at Costello, let's keep these traditions going!! Looking forward to next year, Morgan Bowerman and Kristen Marie Northey are ready for you help next year as they stepped up to co-chair the 2026 Costello Fair!

Check out the terrific photos on the Costello PTO Facebook page!

Springtime Safety & Responsibility at School Springtime Safety & Responsibility at School

With the arrival of spring and warmer weather, we often see an increase in unexpected or unsafe behaviors. Our staff continues to do an excellent job reminding students of our Cardinal Traits and the importance of staying safe at school—especially keeping hands and bodies to themselves.

Still, it’s important to remember that adults may not witness everything as it happens. That’s why we’re intentionally teaching students to take ownership of their actions and play an active role in keeping themselves and others safe. Please help us reinforce the following by talking with your children.

Communicate Needs Through Words:

1. Speak Up Assertively

Students are encouraged to use their words in a clear and respectful way when something doesn’t feel right. For example:

“I don’t like it when you ________ (chase me, stand too close, etc.). Stop now or I will go to an adult.”
If the behavior continues, students are expected to walk away and ask for help.

2. Go to an Adult

If the behavior does not stop—or if a student feels unsafe or uncomfortable—they should go directly to the nearest adult for support. Adults are here to listen, help, and ensure every child feels safe.

3. Be a Problem-Solver and a Role Model

We encourage students to model safe, respectful behavior by including others, using kind words and actions, and encouraging peers to follow school expectations.

4. When you See a Problem

Be an Upstander, help encourage your friends to do the right things, OR get help, don't standby, take action, get help!

Let's all help students build confidence, strengthen relationships, and contribute to an environment that’s safe, inclusive, and fun for everyone.

Think First Be Responsible

Impulsive behavior can have lasting effects on everyone involved.
Whether it’s saying something hurtful to fit in or acting out frustrations in an unsafe way, our actions have an impact on others and how we are viewed.

That’s why it’s so important to pause, think carefully, and consider the potential consequences before we act. Consider role playing some of this.

Supporting Growth Through Accountability

When students approach an adult for help, we often ask what steps they tried first to solve the problem. This encourages reflection and empowers students to take ownership in managing peer conflict.

If a behavior continues or becomes more serious, we may use additional strategies to guide student growth. These supports are not punishments—they are teaching tools designed to help students learn from their experiences. Strategies may include:

  • Reflection tools such as Think Sheets
  • Office Discipline Referrals (ODRs)
  • Parent communication or in-person visits
  • Restitution, or making things right with others
  • Safe Recess Plans
  • Practice missing skills (it’s okay to be frustrated, it’s not okay to yell at others, we can take a break instead, let’s practice…” I am frustrated, can I take a walk, step away from my project, etc.?”
  • Privilege loss, for safety and learning (tough on adults and kids, but it makes an impact!)
  • Structured, high-energy movement or physical resets

Learning Through Mistakes

We fully expect students to make mistakes—this is a natural and important part of growing up. Just as important is helping them reflect, take responsibility, and repair any harm caused.

When we don’t hold students accountable, we risk sending the message that they aren’t capable of solving problems or learning from setbacks. This can lead to increased dependence on adults and missed opportunities for social-emotional growth. However, students who are supported in reflecting, owning their actions, and practicing better choices become more confident, respectful, and independent members of our school community.

Keep Hands and Body to Yourself

This basic school expectation is taught and reinforced from kindergarten through 5th grade—yet it remains one of the most common challenges during recess and unstructured time.

Physical aggression and verbal disrespect are serious behaviors that will not be taken lightly. Repeated incidents will be addressed in accordance with the Troy School District Code of Conduct.

Thank you for your continued partnership and for reinforcing these skills at home and helping us finish the year strong!

M-STEP Update... M-STEP Update...

Our students are working incredibly hard and staying focused as they strive toward their goals on the M-STEP test. Thank you for all the ways you support them at home - by encouraging a positive mindset, making sure they're well-rested, providing a protein-rich breakfast, and sending them with charged iPads. The teachers and I are so proud; it's clear they’re putting in their best efforts!

M-STEP Testing Reminders!

As we begin M-STEP testing this week, here are a few important ways you can help your child feel prepared and confident each day:

🛌Get a Good Night’s Sleep – A well-rested brain is a ready brain!
🍳Eat a Healthy Breakfast – Include some protein like eggs, yogurt, or nut butter to fuel their focus.
🔌 Charge iPads Every Night – Make sure devices are fully charged and ready to go in the morning.
⏰ Arrive On Time – Being on time helps your child start the day calmly and without added stress.

Thank you for supporting your student’s success—we’ve got this! 💪📚✏️

Ask you child to tell you:

  • What is your goal for crushing the M-STEP?
  • If it is not specific help them come up with a specific strategy (re-read, stay focused, read all of the answers first, etc.)
  • What did you learn in the assembly?
  • How they can earn the rock wall?

Congratulations Math Pentathlon Club! Congratulations Math Pentathlon Club!

Costello's 2nd and 3rd graders, part of the Math Pentathlon Club, participated in the NATIONAL MP tournament, competing against students all across Michigan and Ohio! The kids had amazing results, and it was a very successful first season!

Results: A total of 13 students participated, with 10 of those students winning medals, and Alex Cheng (3rd grade), who won the Hall of Fame award, winning all 5 games! I'm hoping that more students will join the club in the upcoming school year for the 2025-2026 season.

Our amazing 5th-grade leaders (Jack, Ryan - stepped in for Beckett F.-, A.J., Zachary, Audrina, CeCi, Kate & Olivia) kicked off an inspiring assembly for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders! They reminded everyone to:

  • Try their best

  • Persevere through challenges

  • Get a good night’s sleep

  • Fuel up with protein (so their focus isn’t interrupted by a growling stomach!)

We also heard powerful words from Ms. McClure, Mr. Rondot, and Mr. McKinney about how to face challenges head-on with courage and determination.

Our goal? For every student to give their absolute best effort.

We wrapped up the assembly with a blast of music and a special M-STEP-themed rewrite of “YMCA”—you won’t want to miss it! (Thank you to Ms. Scarnecchia for putting the song together!)

👉 Ask your child:

  • What did you learn from the assembly?

  • What’s your goal for the M-STEP?

  • What happens after the test if you give it your best?

Check out the PowerPoint together to spark conversation and help your test-taker feel confident and motivated!

The 4 Ds! The 4 Ds!

(Thoughts to reflect on from Anxious Generation)

Danger, disappointment, distress, and discomfort—these are all part of life that our kids will eventually face. By shielding them from these challenges, we risk raising fragile, overly sensitive children who struggle when things get tough. Age-appropriate encounters with these "4 Ds" help prepare kids for the bigger, more complex versions they’ll face as young adults. Kids are incredibly resilient, and we need to trust them to figure things out and learn from their experiences with these challenges.

When you hear things like this from your child how are you most likely to respond?

  • "I didn’t get invited to __________."

  • "I wanted the other teacher."

  • "I forgot my permission slip."

  • (Midway through a session) "I don’t want to do __________ anymore, I’m not as good as my friends."

It’s easy to want to step in and solve the problem, but if we continuously rescue we are teaching them they can't handle hard stuff. There is a tendency to over-supervise normal childhood experiences while under-supervising their use of electronic devices. Teaching kids to navigate danger, disappointment, distress, and discomfort builds resilience, confidence, and prepares them for life’s bigger challenges.

Remember, anxious adults create anxious kids—they absorb and reflect our emotions.

Portraits: Costello Students on Collaboration

Dear Parents,

As we reflect on the year, it's inspiring to see the growth and progress our students have made. They’ve been working on a wide range of skills, including math, reading, writing, fitness, mindset, self-regulation, problem-solving, stamina in writing, social interactions, communication, organization, routines, self-advocacy, and so much more. With spring upon us, this is the perfect time to pause and celebrate the strides your child has taken. Think back to the fall—look at how far they’ve come! It’s important to take a moment to recognize and celebrate their hard work, and don’t forget to acknowledge your role in their success.

One of the greatest joys of my job is working alongside families. I truly value hearing how you guide and teach your children the essential life lessons that will carry them through life.

While academic learning is essential, it’s just as important to teach life skills, problem-solving, values, and social interactions. If a child struggles with a math problem or reading, we step in to teach them. Similarly, when a child needs support in their behavior or social skills, we should approach that with the same dedication—teaching them explicitly and holding them accountable.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership. We couldn’t do the important work of nurturing and educating future generations without your care and support. Together, we’re helping our children thrive in all aspects of life.

I hope you have a wonderful spring break and can enjoy some special family time together!

PTO Updates... PTO Updates...

Hello Costello Community! 25-March-PTO Vol Needs.docx

March is the month that our PTO accepts nominations for next year’s PTO Board. Our PTO Board is made up of the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. As of now, these positions have members who have expressed interest and commitment in taking these jobs over for next school year. However, if you wish to be nominated for any of these board positions, you can still do that! Please email Jen Ford at jhutch44@hotmail.com so you can be added to our nominations for the April meeting. Nominations will close at the end of the April PTO meeting which will be held on April 14th. Voting will take place at our May 12 PTO meeting. All Costello parents are automatically voting members of our PTO.

Biggest Need for 2025/2026 School Year:

Adult Auction Committee needs a chair, co-chair and additional committee members for 2026. The Auction raises between $16,000 and $20,000 annually. If we do not have members from our community commit to these roles by March 28th, we will begin the process of cutting the budget for the 25-26 school year to reflect not having the Auction. If you are willing and able to step into one of these roles, please reach out to Jen Ford as soon as possible jhutch44@hotmail.com

Below are the projections for the committee chairs for the 25-26 school year. We do have positions that will need new committee chairs for the 26-27 school year. Shadowing these positions during the upcoming 25-26 school year is recommended. The only way these events will continue is if new, Costello parents’, step in and take them over.

We welcome ALL parents to take part if they are able! Remember, joining a committee is a great way to make a difference, meet new friends and learn alongside someone. Please contact Jen Ford if you would like more information about shadowing any of the chair positions or joining any of the committees below. YOU ARE WELCOME AND NEEDED!

  • Room Parent Chair – Jamie Kaniarz - Erica Filipucci & Brittany Dwyer to shadow 2025/2026 then take over
  • Spirit Wear – Allison Allen - this position will be open in the 26-27 school year – open to shadow 25-26
  • Ways and Means – Kristen Northey
  • Fun Run – Ingrid Peeples - Maria Esteinou to shadow 2025 to run 2026/2027
  • Auction – OPEN - NEED CHAIR, CO-CHAIRS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS for 25-26 school year!
  • Community Service – Anushya Pachathu
  • Green Schools – Brandy Cooper
  • Publicity/Web Coordinator – Lindsey Miller – need volunteer to shadow 2025/2026 to run 26-27
  • Trunk or Treat – Lindsey Miller – need volunteer to shadow 2025/2026 and run 26-27
  • Costello Ball for All – Amanda Haverty-Harris
  • Costello Fair – Morgan Bowerman & Kristen Northey

We are so thankful for each of the above volunteers as well as the whole Costello community! The Costello community continues to pull together year after year and your support, whether that is given through attending, planning, donating, sending in needed items or volunteering for part of an event, are what make it all work. This is a very special community with a strong PTO that serves our students and teachers well. Our goal is to continue this, but we need your help!

Sincerely,

Research on Parent Participation...

  • Strong family-school partnerships are linked to improved student outcomes. The Family-School Partnerships Frameworkfrom the U.S. Department of Education stresses the importance of creating a positive relationship between families and schools to support student success. This framework outlines that consistent parent-teacher communication fosters trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the child’s well-being.

  • Parent-teacher conferences allow for the early identification of academic, behavioral, or social challenges. According to the American Educational Research Association, early intervention can prevent small problems from growing into bigger challenges and can provide students with the support they need to succeed.

Supervise Digital Devices... Supervise Digital Devices...

  • Recently, there’s been some talk among students about Squid Games on Netflix. As many of you know, this show contains content that is definitely not suitable for elementary-aged children. While this is one example, there are other shows and digital content that can be inappropriate for young viewers.

With so many devices and online activities to manage, here are a few helpful tips to consider to ensure your child’s safety and well-being:

    1. Use Devices in Shared Spaces: Have your child use digital devices only in common areas where an adult can easily supervise—this means no devices in bedrooms or private spaces.

    2. Monitor Browsing History: Regularly check the browsing history on your child’s devices to see what websites, apps, or content they’ve been accessing. This gives you a better understanding of their online activities.

    3. Set Screen Time Limits: Consider using parental control settings to limit screen time and ensure age-appropriate content. Many devices and apps allow you to customize settings to help guide your child's digital experiences.

By staying actively engaged with your child’s digital world, you can help them make safer and smarter choices online.

Through identity maps, they explored the unique qualities that each student brings to the classroom community. Students wrote opinion letters explaining why they should be selected for the job positions to best match their personalities. When things didn’t go as planned, students learned to embrace flexibility and adapt to new situations, always keeping things moving forward. Additionally, the class researched Next Steps 4 Seniors and decided to participate in Athens Charity Week by donating all of our earnings to support the cause. Together a lot was accomplished!

The tradition lives on! What started as a simple idea has now become a cherished memory for all who attend. Maeve Tennies, a 5th grader who introduced the "Ball for All" concept to the PTO, played a key role in organizing the very first event in 2023. Now a 7th grader at Larson Middle School, Maeve’s vision continues on at Costello. Dinner, dancing, fancy clothes, and endless smiles filled the evening. A heartfelt thank you to the Harris family—Amanda and Jason, parents of third grader Madison and kindergartner Makenzie—for ensuring the legacy of this event continues. Amanda has added so many special touches from festive balloons, photo booths, magicians, balloon artists, and this year everyone personalized their own masquerade mask. What a wonderful night for our community! Thank you to all who were able to make it to support this event. Kindergartners are working on true stories, stretching sounds, words to match the pictures. This is hard work! Great job!

3rd Grade Persuasive Writing... 3rd Grade Persuasive Writing...

Third graders chose a topic they were passionate about and wrote a speech that would persuade others to listen to and adopt their ideas. The final project was delivering the speech to the class.

5th Grade Argument Essays... 5th Grade Argument Essays...

Our 5th graders are diving into argument essays, making compelling cases for or against having chocolate milk as a lunch option. Their writing is truly impressive, with strong research to back up their points. It’s amazing to see how much they grow, from kindergarten to 5th grade!

Math Problem Solving... Math Problem Solving...

Teachers encourage and promote advanced problem solving and thinking in math daily by proposing interesting problems that students solve and share with each other. This student is using second grade addition strategies to solve multiplication.

5th graders had to design and construct a building using only 80 cubes then write an equation to find the volume of the building. Some students even noticed they could combine their buildings to create a cozy scene.

Take Pride & Show Responsibility... Take Pride & Show Responsibility...

Please help us emphasize the importance of taking care of materials, backpacks, snow/rain gear, etc. with your child. Ask your child...

  • How does your hook/locker/cubby look?
  • Would I be proud of how you are taking care of your things?
  • Are you setting a good example for your classmates?
  • Are your materials organized and are you being responsible?

Take time, slow down and do it the right way 😀

Instrumental Music Performance... Instrumental Music Performance...

Practice truly pays off! In just 5 months, our 5th graders have made incredible strides with their instruments—improving everything from reading notes to performing full songs. Great job, everyone!

Attendance Area Review Committee Update

The Troy School District is committed to keeping our community informed as we review our attendance area boundaries. This fall, we formed a committee composed of community members, TSD staff, building administrators, and central office administrators. The committee has been actively engaged in analyzing data, discussing options, and reviewing potential adjustments to the TSD school boundary maps.

The committee’s three main goals are to:

  • Analyze enrollment across all four middle schools to achieve balanced enrollment.
  • Resolve “double splits” that affect students’ transitions between schools.
  • Ensure that high school attendance boundaries remain unchanged.

The attendance area review has four phases, and we are currently in Phase 1:

Phase 1: Discovery - The committee was formed. Research, analysis, and planning commence. The committee develops potential recommendations.

Phase 2: Recommendation (January) - The committee provides the board of education with a recommendation (options). The board determines if the district should move forward with the work.

Phase 3: Feedback (February - April) - TSD will hold four listening sessions, one at each middle school, to obtain feedback from our community. We will also send out a community survey for additional feedback.

Phase 4: Determination (April/May) - TSD will provide the Board with a summary of feedback, and they will determine any future changes.

To date, the committee has reviewed and discussed several options. The group last met on Monday, December 9, to finalize a few potential options for the Board to consider. The committee recommendation will be taken to the Board of Education in January to begin Phase Two. TSD will continue to provide our community with regular updates regarding the attendance area review.

Families,

You are welcome to attend the Winter Wonderland with your students at the times listed above. This is an outdoor only event. Please be sure you and your students are dressed for the weather. There will be singing & dancing (nothing formal), hot cocoa for the students and possibly some reindeer visitors (shhh...this is a secret, we don't want to disappoint the students in case our 4 legged friends can't make it.)

This event is for students, staff and parents. We love dogs, but they are not invited. Thank you for understanding!

Thank you in advance to all of our volunteers, party planners and room parents for coordinating the parties on December 20th!

Staffing Update...

I am reaching out to share the news that I will be moving into a new role as the Baker Middle School Vocal Music Teacher beginning January 6th. It is a new adventure and while I am looking forward to it, I am already missing all of my bright Costello students. The past years teaching your children have been filled with so many wonderful memories and sweet musical moments. I am so grateful to you for supporting your child learning music. It has been a privilege to witness them light up with joy in discovering what they can do musically.

The Costello community is such a special and caring one that I’ve been so fortunate to have been a part of. I will do all I can to help ease the transition and support your child. I plan to continue our afterschool 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Choir Club on Mondays at 4:10pm in the Costello music room. Our next session begins January 27th at this link: https://troy.ce.eleyo.com/course/902/2024-2025/costello-choir-club%E2%80%941. I’d love to continue singing with your child!

Wishing your family a wonderful winter break together!

This Week's Cardinal Power Winners... This Week's Cardinal Power Winners...

We are so proud of you! Keep working hard and showing your Cardinal Traits!

Reflections... Reflections...

A few highlights from a terrific week...

  • Students enjoying the first December snowfall
  • Teachers are celebrating students' hard work and progress on reading assessments. This progress highlights perseverance and growth. Moving up multiple levels takes focus and consistency.
  • Kindergarten partnerships; students sharing their writing with one another, they are so proud to tell their stories.
  • 5th graders asking, what they can do to help around the school.
  • I heard a fourth grader invite a classmate to give him another chance, "Can we be friends again?"
  • Restorative conversations that help student learn from their mistakes, take responsibility, say sorry and move forward.

Responsibility at Home & School... Responsibility at Home & School...

When children are given meaningful tasks, they experience a sense of accomplishment and pride that can boost their confidence and foster independence. These moments of success help them see the value of their contributions, whether at home, in the classroom, or in the community. By assigning age-appropriate responsibilities and celebrating their efforts, we can help them develop important life skills and a positive sense of self. Let's work together to encourage and inspire our kids to take ownership of their growth and achievements!

Book Fair... Book Fair...

Thank you to Mrs. Homrich for setting up another terrific book fair and great timing for the holidays. Shout out to all of our volunteers who helped throughout the week. This is another memorable event that the students look forward to.

All Things Winter... All Things Winter...

The students had so much fun playing the snow this week! Thank you for sending your student well bundled so they can enjoy the cold weather.

The students enjoy the outdoor weather when they are dressed for it. Thank you for sending your students in "all things warm." We don't want students to be wet after recess, snow pants and snow boots are necessary for playing in the snow. Be sure to LABEL, LABEL, LABEL. Large waterproof bags to hold all of the gear is super helpful. Here's what the gear situation looks like. Our teachers do the best they can to help make sure all of the items make it to the correct students. We appreciate your patience.

Cardinal Nesting

This week, our students "flew" to their Cardinal Nests—this happens throughout the year at Costello. Each student is part of a consistent nest group, guided by the same nesting teacher and surrounded by the same group of peers throughout their time at our school. Nesting creates opportunities to build strong, lasting relationships with students across all grades, K-5, while exploring and living out the Cardinal Traits of perseverance, respect, integrity, and responsibility.

Nesting also aligns with TSD’s Red Pillar focus on well-being, fostering an inclusive and supportive community. This week’s lesson highlighted how we can use our Cardinal Traits to include and support others who learn differently. Students explored the importance of kindness and respect, understanding that people who learn, communicate, or experience the world differently have feelings just like everyone else. By practicing empathy and inclusion, we continue to build a school culture where everyone feels valued, and respected.

Book Study... Book Study...

Some of our staff are participating in a book study. Such great energy in the room for the discussion. We reflected on ways to support students by teaching missing skills in the area of behavior just as we do for academics. What is the missing skill? How can we teach and practice it? We must use grace and accountability together to foster positive changes. Go Team!

Thanksgiving Thanks...

Thank you for taking the time to show gratitude to our incredible Costello team, so many of you participated. The staff was very appreciative of your kind words. Below is a special message for our arrival volunteer, Mr. Nickerson from the Hariharasudhan Family.

As we start Thanksgiving break, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible support within our Costello community. Our partnership is so important, as educators and parents we are working to raise independent, confident and kind students who make positive contributions to our world.

I hope this break gives you a chance to step away from screens and embrace meaningful moments with your family. Spend time outdoors, bake and cook together, work on a project, share stories, engage in conversations, and simply play as a family.

Wishing you a joyful and restful Thanksgiving filled with quality time and special memories.

United Bowling... United Bowling...

Costello hosted two programs from Wass & Hamilton Elementary on Wednesday for the United Bowling Tournament. What a fun event that promotes inclusion. Our Cardinals gave the students a warm welcome!

Do Difficult Things...

Exposing children and adults to challenging situations “builds physical and psychological stress tolerance,” says Marano. With kids, this goes against the conventional advice on parenting, but having challenging experiences “protects them far more and for far longer than most present-day efforts to keep them safe… Stress inoculation stimulates active coping.” Ways to Overcome Adversity by Hara Estroff Marano in Psychology Today, November/ December 2024 (Vol. 57, #6, pp. 32-37, 45)

TSD Code of Conduct & Restorative Practices...

RESTORATIVE DISCIPLINE PRACTICES

A major consideration of the Code of Conduct is to identify appropriate disciplinary actions that will bring about positive student behavior. Restorative Discipline focuses on the harms, needs and causes of student behavior, not just the breaking of rules and dispensing of punishment. Restorative discipline attempts to provide students with an opportunity to be accountable for the harm caused as well as the opportunity to repair the harm. Students are empowered to help resolve conflict and maintain an environment where the work of the school can happen. The goal of restorative discipline is to provide students an opportunity to learn to think differently about harm, to deal with conflict in peaceful and creative ways, to address accountability and responsibility, to focus on one another’s humanity and to problem-solve in terms of community and collaboration.

Student violators of the Code of Conduct may have the opportunity to engage in restorative practices as a consequence of their inappropriate behavior, as facilitated by school officials. It is important that any student engaging in restorative practices freely admit to any wrongdoing and express contrition for their actions to the offended parties. Restorative practices developed in response to a Code of Conduct violation may include but are not limited to the following productive activities:

  • Restitution
  • Alternative suspension including In-School Suspension/Detention
  • Apology for offense (both written and verbal)
  • Participation in diversion programs
  • Community service activities
  • Outreach and awareness activities
  • Course of study, book study, or other applied learning experience
  • Behavior plan or behavior contract
  • Participation in counseling in and out of school
  • Engage in in agency and community supports,
  • Student-to-student mediation

There was so much positivity around the importance of community, communication and and simply getting to know your neighbors. Thanks to our Costello families who were able to attend, we were well represented!!

Halloween Parade & Party - October 30th Halloween Parade & Party - October 30th

As we prepare for our upcoming Halloween festivities, we want to ensure that everyone has a fun and safe experience—especially our younger students! With that in mind, we kindly ask for your support in following a few guidelines for Halloween costumes:

  • No weapons of any kind (real or pretend) should be part of costumes.
  • Please avoid bloody, gory, or frightening costumes that might scare our younger students.
  • Costumes should be appropriate for school.

PARADE - 3:00 PM

Get your cameras ready, we are looking forward to seeing the students in their Halloween costumes.

Parents are welcome to attend the parade which will be in the bus loop. Parking will be limited, please walk or carpool if you plan to attend.

Inclement weather plan? If necessary, the parade will be held indoors. This will be for students only.

Sorry, pets are not invited to this event!

CLASSROOM PARTIES - (Immediately following the parade)

Only party volunteers, on the office list, will enter the building. Thank you for helping us make our Halloween celebrations safe and positive for everyone!

Chat with your Child... Chat with your Child...

We have a high energy week ahead! Students will be "feeling" the excitement of Halloween for the next week! We want ALL students to experience the fun activities. If everyone is following the Cardinal Traits this will ensure a great time for all. Self regulation and communication with words, not physical actions is expected. The Code of Conduct https://www.troy.k12.mi.us/student-life/code-of-conduct will be enforced. Please review our Cardinal Traits and expectations with your child(ren):

  • It is okay to be frustrated, when you are frustrated it is NEVER okay to respond by hurting someone else either physically or emotionally.
  • When we are frustrated we can communicate our problems/concerns without being nasty with our words. Share opportunities when you have been frustrated and used the Cardinal Traits to communicate respectfully.
  • Thank you for reinforcing, modeling, naming and noticing opportunities to use the Cardinal Traits at home.

This video https://youtu.be/R-u29P1bGro?si=5chntxG2zMRaDw8z features Barnard School and shows opportunities for de-escalation strategies. Costello also offers the same resources to "cool down" when frustrated. We are fortunate to have two sensory rooms at Costello and calming corners in each classroom.

We are looking forward to our assembly this week to kick off our United Bowling Program, to recognize students who are leaders in displaying the Cardinal Traits, to review our Cardinal Traits and to sing our Cardinal Pep Song!

Captured this authentic peer to peer interaction at lunch this week...empathy, respect, love!

Distractions to Learning... Distractions to Learning...

CELL PHONES & SMART WATCHES:

Electronic devices cause distractions to the learning for the student using them as well as classmates.

See guidelines below:

Unless necessary for medical use, cell phones must be silenced or powered off and kept in the child's backpack. Elementary students are not permitted to use cell phones at any point during the school day.

Smart watches and devices with data series and message/calling capabilities (this includes GPS watches and Apple Watches) must be in "airplane" mode during the school day.

Students should not be receiving and/or sending communication via smart watches during the school day. Students may be required to remove smart devices during assessments or if they become a distraction. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen devices.

Please communicate through the main office for last minute changes in transportation. We will be sure to let your child/teacher know. For your child's safety, the adults need to ensure that the information is appropriately followed. Thank you for your cooperation.

TOYS & TRADING CARDS:

Toys and trading cards, such as Pokémon cards, can be distracting and may lead to issues if lost. While there may be occasional opportunities for these items at school, they should generally remain at home. If necessary, the teacher will hold onto any distracting items, and parents can arrange to retrieve them.

COSTELLO FUN RUN 2024, WOW!!!! COSTELLO FUN RUN 2024, WOW!!!!

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect fall day for the Fun Run! Kicking off the opening ceremony with a lap in the firetruck certainly got the Cardinals FIRED UP! A big thanks to Mrs. Maliepaard for recruiting her husband, a Troy Volunteer Fireman, to be part of our Fun Run. It was amazing to see so many parents join us, cheering on the students and making the day extra special!

A HUGE shoutout to our Fun Run organizer extraordinaire, Ingrid Peeples! Your boundless energy and unwavering dedication made this event an incredible success. THANK YOU, just doesn't seem like enough Ingrid! Those two words are packed with gratitude for all that you do. Your "I can do it" positive attitude makes a significant impact on our school 🤗!!!

Special thanks to Mr. Frank, who never lets us down. From set up to tear down, you brought smiles to everyone’s faces! Jenny Martus, the t-shirts were absolutely amazing — pulling that together in time for the Fun Run was no small task, and you nailed it!

And, of course, to our INCREDIBLE Costello staff — how about those teachers? A busy night of conferences followed by the Fun Run, and yet you all brought the energy and spirit! There’s no better team than Team Costello!

Beth Klida, we appreciate your years of dedication, taking care of the signs and stepping in to support Ingrid whenever needed. Keith Harper, our long-time Fun Run announcer and ‘voice of the Fun Run,’ you did a fantastic job keeping the crowd pumped with shoutouts! Thanks also to Barb Belcher for lending a hand with shoutouts. And we are so fortunate to have Mike Frazier of Prestige Weddings and Events generously donate his DJ services once again. Just when we were getting tired, another great song came on to keep us going!

Naaman Kiah Ford, your incredible photos help us capture and cherish the memories from this special day. Thank you for sharing your talent with us!

And last but certainly not least, THANK YOU to our amazing Costello community! Your generous donations help supplement our budget, providing enriching opportunities for our students. If you did not get a chance to donate yet, it's not too late, the website will be open until next Friday. What a beautiful way for our community to come together and support our school!

MOST IMPORTANT! We need parents, neighbors, friends, or family to help by decorating trunks and passing out candy. The candy will be provided (by donations from those attending and the PTO) and a prize winner for best trunk will be chosen. Look for a sign up to come around soon!

  • Impacts ability to attend - Studies show that students with attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) are heavier users of smartphones and video games.
  • Planning and organizing skills referred to as "executive functioning" skills develop through focused attention. Higher usage of devices makes focusing more challenging.
  • Consider what children are missing out on by being on devices for significant lengths of time.

TSD Career Readiness... TSD Career Readiness...

Starting career readiness in elementary school is important because it helps children explore their interests and develop essential skills like problem-solving and teamwork. Early exposure to different careers can guide their future education and career choices, setting them up for long-term success.

We are excited to introduce you to a valuable resource that will play a crucial role in your child’s educational journey—Xello!

Xello is an interactive online platform designed to help students explore their interests, discover future career opportunities, and develop essential life skills. Through engaging activities and personalized learning experiences, Xello empowers students to begin thinking about their goals and aspirations from an early age. Click here to learn how Xello works at the elementary level.

As part of our commitment to supporting your child’s growth and development, we will be using Xello to help create an Education Development Plan (EDP). An EDP is a roadmap that guides your child’s learning and personal development throughout their educational career. It helps students set goals, track their progress, and make informed decisions about their future.

We believe that starting this process early will set a strong foundation for your child’s success in school and beyond. We encourage you to explore Xello with your child and discuss their experiences and discoveries. By completing the lessons below, all students will have had exposure to each of the 6 career zones along with learning important skills such as perseverance, teamwork and goal setting.

Student Access to Xello
To access Xello, TSD Students use Clever. Students will login to Clever with their TSD email and password. Once logged into the Clever portal site, locate and select the Xello icon to log into the Xello application. Parent access to Xello will be sent out at a later date with instructions on how to log in so you can work alongside your student in their EDP journey.

Sincerely,

Mike Munaco

Supervisor of Career Readiness and Tech Ed.

Fun Run News...

Hello Costello families,

It's Fun Run time! This well-loved event will be held on the morning of Friday, October 11th. We will have a DJ, our Cardinal mascot and all families are encouraged to cheer on your student as they run around the bus loop.

Besides the fun, this event is our primary fundraiser of the year! This event raises needed funds for our yearly PTO activities - supporting our students by enhancing curriculum, supplies and educational experiences. We hope to raise $30,000 this year!

Our goal is to have 100% of all students registered and share online! It’s easy, FREE, and takes a few quick minutes. Each student is also encouraged to raise $75.00. If each student does, we can reach our goal.

WE NEED ALL FAMILIES TO DO 3 EASY STEPS:

1. REGISTER or re-login to your parent dashboard and complete your child’s student webpage at getmovinfundhub.com. School Identifier: 5d35ce6112f78

2. SEND 10-15 emails and/or text messages. This is easy through your Get Movin’ student website.

3. SHARE with friends and family, they want to help! Post on Facebook or Twitter. Each person has an average of 300 FB friends. They want to help your child reach their goal!

PTO Funds Made Science Alive Possible....THANK YOU! PTO Funds Made Science Alive Possible....THANK YOU!

These experiences not only create lasting memories for our students, but they also offer valuable opportunities for teachers to inspire shared writing and idea generation. Events like Science Alive allow teachers to integrate these 'lived' experiences into the curriculum. We are incredibly fortunate at Costello to have such rich, supplemental experiences that not all schools are able to offer. Thank you for your continued contributions.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOL... BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOL...

It has been the tradition for many elementary students to celebrate their birthday at school by bringing in cupcakes, cookies, or other food related treats. While the district intends to continue to celebrate the child’s special day, there is a need to do so in a way that is healthy for everyone involved. The reasons are listed below:

There are students in every elementary building who have severe, sometimes life-threatening, allergies, and in many cases they are unable to partake of the treat. Also, district staff learned in an Epi-pen training session this summer that 25% of all first-time anaphylactic reactions occur in schools.

Schools have been charged with promoting healthy eating habits inside and outside of school.

Our schools are committed to preserving instructional time. There is no obligation to recognize your child’s birthday at school. However, if you choose to recognize your child’s special day, please do not send birthday treats to school, as they will not be shared with the class. Instead, of bringing or sending a food treat to celebrate your child’s birthday, parents may:

Send in a favorite book for the student to share with the class on the child’s special day.

Donate a book for the classroom in honor of the child’s special day.

Send in for the day or donate a recess game for indoor recesses.

Send in for the day or donate a piece of playground equipment (various balls or games) for outdoor recesses.

If you have another idea of how to celebrate your child’s birthday, you may discuss this with your child’s teacher.

Our elementary buildings will continue to recognize and celebrate our students’ birthdays at school, even as that recognition takes new forms. The district appreciates your cooperation and hopes you will understand the reasoning behind this decision.

This procedure for celebrating students’ birthdays does not extend to the classroom holiday parties, though please note there may be allergy restrictions for those events as well. The food/treats that are provided at these events will be determined by the buildings.

PARTIES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL

Parties can be a fun time for all students!! Many times throughout the school year, students wish to hold special event parties outside of school. If invitations to such parent-supervised parties are distributed at school, it will be mandatory that all “boys”, all “girls” or all students in the class be invited. If not, distribution of invitations will not be permitted. Many times, one or two students are left out of such events causing hurt feelings, tears and low self-esteem. Help us help each child feel good about him/her by including all in extra activities.

Principal for the Day! Principal for the Day!

Principal Gornick was Principal for the Day and her assistant principal for was Ms. Haeun Jo. Principal Gornick started the day announcing the Cardinal ticket winners for the week. From there we headed to Central Office for ID badges. While there, they were able to meet our Superintendent, Dr. Machesky and Assistant Superintendent, Ms. Griffor. Next stop was Troy Union. With architect plans in hand for our new Costello playground we researched Troy Union's playground by giving the new equipment a try! A quick stop at Wendy's for lunch and then off to visit classrooms, hand out Cardinal ticket and support the staff and teachers, what a busy day!

I made it to 7 classrooms this week to show off the architect's plans for our new playground coming next year! The students were excited to vote on some of their favorite colors and playground pieces!

We also talked about our theme "work hard, be nice" the students were able to connect the Cardinal Traits to this phrase. Additionally we talked about bouncing back when things don't go their way. Always fun to spend time with the students!

Unity & Belonging... Unity & Belonging...

If you attended Curriculum Night, you likely noticed the bulletin boards throughout Costello, each one a celebration of our students and staff. These displays highlight where we come from, our favorite foods, and the stories that make each of us unique. Back to School Update 2024 Back to School Update 2024

Welcome Back to Another Exciting Year!

Hey Cardinals! Summer is great, but wow, do we have a fun year ahead! Wait until you see the new furniture throughout the building—Costello looks terrific! Mr. Frank has been hard at work, cleaning and painting. Our teachers have been busy preparing, and their excitement is growing; they can't wait to meet their new Cardinals. See you soon!

Welcome Cardinals Fall 2024!

The Cardinal Connection is our primary way to communicate important school information. It is updated throughout each month, with previous communications archived for easy reference.

Currently, our TSD websites are under construction. Once they are finalized, we encourage you to use the website to check calendar events, access forms, and find the updated link to the Cardinal Connection. This Back-to-School update is packed with useful information, so please read carefully and be sure to click on the additional links!

The Cardinal Connection will be shared via School Messenger. Once our improved Costello website is fully functional, we will also add a link to the Cardinal Connection there. For more news, follow us on the Costello Elementary School PTO Facebook page.

SAFETY DURING DISMISSAL...

Dismissing close to 400 students takes patience and a system. THANK YOU for taking the time to read and to be part of the solution. Safety is our number one priority, let's ensure everyone's safety by following these guidelines.
WALKERS & TALKERS... (these students dismiss through the north doors)

• There is not enough space for parents to park, we ask that you please use the Express Loop if you are picking up your child in a vehicle.

• Walkers & Talkers (North Lot) this is designed for families who live close by and can walk to pick up their children.

• Parking spaces are reserved for our staff aides, substitutes, traveling staff, after school program facilitators, CARE staff, etc. These staff members are arriving or leaving during dismissal and should be able to pull in and out without issue.

EXPRESS LOOP/CAR RIDERS...

This is designed for families who are picking up their children in a vehicle.

• For your safety, if you are using the Express Loop, please stay in your car. Students will enter the vehicle from the back seat on the passenger side. Please consider this when securing car seats for younger children.

• Keep moving forward as far as you can and follow the directions from the staff. Even if you see your child keep moving toward the end of the loop. Students know the path and will head this way.

• Everyone is in a hurry, please be considerate of others. If you need a faster pick up, plan to arrive earlier to position yourself at the front of the loop.

• Using the Express Loop is efficient. If you decide to try, be sure to inform your child’s teacher via an e-mail or note and get an Express Loop color page to print your students name on.

REMINDERS…

-Walkers, for everyone’s safety, PLEASE use the crosswalk.

- No students should be unaccompanied in the parking lot without a parent.

-Transportation Changes – Please keep in mind that while teaching, teachers are likely not able to check their e-mails. Sending a paper note to the teacher in your child’s folder is the best way to ensure the teacher receives the message.

-The office is quite busy at the very end of the day which is why we ask for late dismissal changes to be made (when possible) prior to 3:30.

-During arrival and departure skateboards, bikes, scooters, etc. on the sidewalk in front of the school and around all traffic flow should be carried or pushed. The Troy Police Department partners with our schools to enforce our safety rules.

Patience starts in the car rider loop, show your Cardinal Traits! Thank you for your cooperation!

Student Support Aides, Substitute Teachers, Noon Aides...

We need YOU!!

⭐️ We need Noon Aides!! As a Noon Aide, you’ll help the students have a safe lunch and recess. This is done by supervising them outside on the playground for lunch recess and during their eating time in the cafeteria.
