A Message from Principal Uridil
SHMS Families,
I am writing because we want to make sure your child is doing their best in school. You work hard for your family, and we want to work hard for you. When families and schools work together, students succeed.
We invite you to join us for Parent-Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, February 10th, from 3:30–6:30 PM. This is an important time to talk about your child’s progress and next steps. If you are unable to attend that evening, teachers will reach out by phone or email on other days. Please watch for those messages.
One area I continue to bring up in my newsletter is nightly reading. Yes, I know I mention this often — but it truly is one of the biggest influences on a student’s future success. Students should be reading 20 minutes every night. Those who have built this habit have taken off with their learning, while students who have not are falling behind their peers.
If your child has not started this routine yet, now is the time to make it happen. We have a fantastic school library and a strong collection of books available to all students. If students are not bringing books home and reading nightly, they are missing an essential part of their growth.
We also want families to understand how time is used during the school day. Students are given time at school to work on both new assignments and missing work. When students say they do not have time, it often means they are not using their time well. There is still time to catch up, and students should not need to take their Chromebook home to complete assignments. They need to learn how to use the time we intentionally provide during the school day.
If your child is sharing something different, this is a chance to help them reset and build stronger work habits at school.
Strong conversations at home help build responsibility and follow-through. Instead of reminding, try asking questions like:
“What are you reading tonight?”
“Where will you read for your 20 minutes?”
“How are you using your work time at school?”
“What’s your plan to get caught up?”
“What do you need to do tomorrow to be successful?”
These questions help students reflect, plan, and take ownership of their learning. We provide the time, resources, and support — students need to use them well.
We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, February 10th, and thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s success.

!ACCESS English Language testing is COMPLETE
Hello Shaw family and neighbors!
We are proud to announce that our culturally and linguistically diverse students have valiiently finished their state tests of English language proficiency. Each year our multilingual students participate in this high-stakes test to evaluate their progress in acquiring academic English necessary for success. They spend up to four hours on this test which monitors and gauges their progress in becoming multilingual over a 5 to 7 year period in US public schools across the country. This year we had 100% participation and our test administrators have reported that this is the strongest, most enthusiastic they have ever seen students become while taking these exams. We look forward to strong results in April and will notify all the families of our multilingual students about their students’ results.
Thanks for all your support!
