FMS In The Know: Inclement Weather
Winter 2025-2026
WEATHER THIS WEEKEND MAY CAUSE SCHOOL CLOSURES NEXT WEEK!
READ THROUGH BELOW SO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO
WHAT THE FCS WEBSITE SAYS
In the event of inclement weather, Franklin County Schools may close or delay school. This decision is made after consulting the National Weather Service, local weather forecasters, and area law enforcement officials. Additionally, FCS staff members drive throughout the county to assess road conditions firsthand to better determine accessibility of buses and personal transportation to roads necessary to travel to and from school.
Unless otherwise announced, schools will be open on their regular schedule – regardless of prior closures or delays. As soon as the decision is made, Franklin County Schools will do the following to notify our community:
- Update our district website and official social media accounts
- Notify our schools, which will typically update their own websites and main phone lines
- Send emails, texts, and/or voice calls to parents and staff via district mass-communication system
- Notify local radio and television stations
If the weather is severe enough to make a decision the day or night before, we will do so as soon as possible so that parents have ample time to make arrangements for their child(ren).
Unless otherwise noted, the following procedures will be followed in the event of a closing or delay.
Before and After-school Programs:
- If the opening of school is delayed, Before School child care will not operate.
- If school is closed, Before School and After School child care will not operate.
- If school is closed early due to inclement weather, After School child care will not operate.
Breakfast may be served at the principal's discretion if school is delayed one hour or more. Athletic and extracurricular events will be canceled if school is closed or dismissed early.
Employee Information
Please Note: FCS employees are expected to use their best judgment in deciding whether to come to work. They may take an annual leave day or make up the day at a time agreeable with their supervisor. Teachers cannot use leave on student days if schools are closed for students. On days that buildings are closed for staff, staff should not report on site.
IF FCS SAYS SCHOOL IS CLOSED FOR AN INCLEMENT WEATHER DAY
There is no remote learning & all buildings are closed to students & staff.
*School staff will work with their supervisor to make up missed time or use annual leave.
IF FCS SAYS SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED & STUDENTS WILL DO REMOTE LEARNING
Students will attend school virtually and complete work.
WHAT THE FCS WEBSITE SAYS:
Teachers will provide instruction from home, both synchronous and asynchronous, from 9:00- 2:00. Schools will provide a schedule for instruction for these days.
On a remote learning day, students will work remotely and will not travel to school.
Instructional hours for the district wide remote learning day are 9:00-2:00. Teachers should provide as much learning and student support as possible. Work will be a blend of both synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Schools will work on a specific schedule for that day and share with parents and students. All staff will continue to work until 3:00 on the remote learning day(s).
Teachers will plan lessons to accommodate for the remote learning day. Teachers should prepare for multiple remote learning days and ensure that they have all needed materials for instruction.
Should either an inclement weather or remote learning day be called, all FCS schools and office buildings will be closed. Staff in the central office will work remotely. School-based certified instructional staff will also work remotely. School-based classified staff may work remotely if relevant work is available and if approved by their supervisor. Staff essential to school operations may be asked to report onsite at the supervisor’s discretion. If staff responsibilities do not allow for remote work, staff will coordinate with their supervisor to make up time or use annual leave.
Principals should ensure that all teachers have materials uploaded to Canvas in the event that internet service is unavailable. This may require pre-recording videos prior to the remote learning day.
Here is the schedule for the day:
HOW IT WORKS AT FMS
- Student's sign into ClassLink and go to their teacher's Canvas page.
- The teacher will have a Google Meet link (maybe with a password) on their Canvas Announcements. If there is only a password, then go to meet.google.com and put in the password.
- Students will use the link to attend class. Students need to make sure to enter class on time.
- Students are expected to pay attention and participate, just like a regular class.
- The teacher will take attendance for each class and must be online during the entire class to assist students in doing their work. The teacher does not need to be on camera after the first 15 minutes.
- Students will be responsible for completing any work that is given out during a remote learning day.
- Parents and students who need assistance for classwork can email the teacher and request to meet virtually during office hours (2:00 - 3:00 pm)
