Frigid Weather Alert

January 23, 2026

Frigid Weather AlertJanuary 23, 2026

As we brace for the upcoming extreme frigid temperatures, we want to ensure our students remain safe, warm, and ready to learn. Whether we are in the building or transitioning to a virtual environment, your preparation makes all the difference.

Please review the following guidelines for both extreme cold days and potential e-Learning days.

1. Preparing for Extreme Cold (In-Person Days)

When temperatures or wind chills drop significantly, we take extra precautions at Nichols.

  • Early Entry: Per District 65 protocol, students are allowed to enter the building at 7:40 a.m. whenever the temperature or wind chill is below 19°F.

  • Layer Up: Middle schoolers often resist heavy coats, but extreme cold requires proper gear.

    • Base Layers: Thermal shirts or leggings under jeans.

    • The "Big Three": A heavy wind-resistant coat, insulated gloves/mittens, and a warm hat (most body heat is lost through the head).

    • Footwear: Insulated, waterproof boots with warm socks.

  • Limit Exposure: If your student walks to school, please encourage them to use the most direct route and avoid standing outside for long periods.

2. Preparing for an E-Learning Day

If conditions make going outdoors unsafe, District 65 may enact an e-Learning day. This is a decision made by the Supt. of Schools, Dr. Turner.

  • The Decision: Announcements are typically made via email, text, and the D65 Website by 5:00 AM.

  • E- Learning Procedures and Schedule found here.
