Let's Help the Flock of Eagles Win Again This Year!

Join us for the CSD Battle of the Bands on Saturday, September 13, from 2:00–8:00 p.m. Last year, our very own Flock of Eagles helped Glennwood win first place and secure a $1,000 music grant for our school. This year the Flock will be playing at 4:00 pm and the grant winner will be determined by whichever school has the most students attending! With your support, we’re aiming for a repeat victory! Bring your spirit and your Eagle pride—we need a strong student and family presence to help us win again!

Volunteering and Chaperoning at Glennwood Procedures

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Glennwood Elementary School! To ensure the safety of all students, City Schools of Decatur requires all volunteers and chaperones to have a current background check on file. This is especially important for anyone who will be with students without a staff member present.

How to get a background check:

  • Schedule an appointment: Background checks are conducted at 2635 Talley Street, 2nd Floor. There is a $35 fee (cash or check made out to Glennwood Elementary School) for the background check, and it must be turned in to Glennwood before you go for your background check. You can book an appointment using this link: https://calendar.app.google/du9yW1Gg8SV6pjGp8

  • Important scheduling note: Appointments are typically available on Mondays and Wednesdays. You can schedule an appointment up to 21 days in advance.

  • What to bring: Please bring your driver's license with you to your 10-minute appointment. You will also fill out a short form.

  • Results: The information is submitted to the GBI, and results are often returned within 24 hours.

Please remember that a new background check is required each year for all parents and volunteers. We appreciate your cooperation and support!

*Reach out to Principal Howard if financial assistance is needed to cover the cost of the background check.

This week, I began a lesson on financial literacy in Kindergarten. I will also extend the lesson to other grades. Additionally, I introduced our Eagle Buck School Store, which we will begin starting next week. The Eagle Buck School Store will occur monthly. Students will have the ability to spend their Eagle Bucks that they have been earning through demonstrating our schoolwide SOAR norms. I started the lesson with a fun What If? question and followed it with a short Would You Rather? game. We then watched a fun Schoolhouse Rock! video on budgeting followed by a book all about earning, spending/budgeting, and saving money. We ended the lesson with a game called Spend, Save or Earn where students had to determine if in different situations they would do one of those three things. I ended the lesson with some funny money jokes for kids.

Important Information about Gifted Review

Each fall semester, the gifted review team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it into the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 1. No additional information is needed. The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Glennwood is Susanna Shewan. Please use this LINK to find a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Shewan at sshewan@csdecatur.net or visit CSD's gifted program website.
