A Message From Mrs. Carmody A Message From Mrs. Carmody

Dear Fremont Families,

We had a wonderful week of learning here at school. Students are making great progress as they continue settling into their classrooms and daily routines. It has been exciting to see their confidence grow as the year gets underway.

Our fall benchmarking assessments are now complete, and families can expect to receive MAP results next week. If you have any questions once you review your child’s report, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Please remember that students are not in attendance on Thursday next week.

Thank you for your continued support. Wishing you and your family a restful and enjoyable weekend!

Sincerely,

Beth Carmody

Principal

All of our students gathered for a PAWS assembly today! Willie the Wildcat surprised everyone with a mystery box that revealed the secrets to being a PAWS-itive student. Students laughed, cheered, and left excited to show what it means to be their very best at school.

Attendance Awareness Month: Start Strong! Attendance Awareness Month: Start Strong!

Welcome back, Wildcats! September is Attendance Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to start strong. Showing up each day helps students build routines, connect with classmates, and stay on track with learning. Let’s work together—families and school—to make attendance a priority from the very beginning. And as always, if your child is experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever, please keep them home until they’ve been symptom-free (without medication) for 24 hours.

Notes From The Nurse Notes From The Nurse

There has been a rise in reported cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) at Fremont Elementary this week. This is consistent with trends the Lake County Health Department is reporting across the county.

Please read below for important information.

Symptoms Symptoms start 3 to 5 days after exposure and usually last 7 to 10 days. Do not send your child to school if they have symptoms and contact the school nurse at dbestler@fsd79.org People may have different symptoms, including one or more of the following:

  • Fever

  • Flu-like symptoms

  • Mouth sores

  • Skin rash (may have blisters on palms of hands, soles of feet)

Contagious period (when the disease can be transmitted to another person)
Infected persons are most contagious during the first week of illness and probably longer because the virus can be passed in the stool for several weeks after symptoms are gone.

How is this disease spread?

The virus leaves the body of an infected person through secretions when they cough or sneeze into the air for others to breathe. The virus is also found in one’s stool. Contaminated hands, food or objects placed in the mouth also spreads this virus.

When can my child return to school?

Those with HFMD may return to school when they are feeling well, fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of medications and have no problems with drooling or swallowing.

Treatment If you think you or your child has Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease, contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible for testing and treatment.

  • Drink plenty of fluids.

  • Get plenty of rest.

  • Use of over-the-counter pain relievers may be used for pain.

What you can do if you or your child has HFMD

  • Do not scratch the blisters.

  • Keep all the blisters and wounds clean and watch for any signs of infection.

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, including after touching blisters.

  • Do not share food or drinks if you are sick.

  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

  • Avoid close contact such as kissing or hugging.

Hearing and Vision Screening Information Hearing and Vision Screening Information

Beginning October 20, 2025, Fremont Elementary students will be screened for hearing and/or vision by a Fremont District 79 certified screener. Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months.

Kindergarteners who have submitted the required state vision form will only be screened for hearing. Those who have not submitted the vision form will also be screened for vision. First graders will be screened for hearing only. Second graders will be screened for hearing and vision. Students receiving special education services and students new to the district in all grades will be screened for hearing and vision. If your child is not scheduled to be screened we will be glad to screen them for hearing and/or vision upon your request

If a child does not pass the first screening, they will be rescreened two weeks later. If they do not pass the second screening, a letter will be sent to the parents/guardians notifying them that their child will need further evaluation.

The parent or legal guardian of a student may object to hearing and/or vision screening tests for their child on religious grounds. If you object, please notify me at 847-837-0437 ext. 2002 or contact your child’s teacher.
