RELATIONSHIP WITH OFFICIALS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR SPECTATOR BEHAVIOR
Officials
The commissioner of each sport assigns officials to scheduled games for the season. Neither team has control over which officials are assigned. Officials are required to follow a code of ethics and have no vested interest in which team wins; their responsibility is to conduct the game fairly and maintain order. It is important to recognize that officials are an essential part of the contest, and a game cannot be played without them.
Disagreement with calls is natural; however, taunting, harassing, or verbally addressing officials in a disrespectful manner will be considered unsportsmanlike conduct. Such behavior may result in removal from the contest. Officials have complete authority over the contest and may remove unruly spectators at their discretion.
Coaches, athletic administrators, and school officials work to establish professional relationships with officials throughout the season. These relationships can be compromised by inappropriate behavior from athletes or spectators. Both officials and schools routinely evaluate conduct to ensure a positive and professional environment for competition.
Spectator Behavior and Sportsmanship
Towson High School Athletics prioritizes the development of student-athletes as productive citizens through the demonstration of sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for all participants. Spectators are expected to reinforce these values by exhibiting appropriate behavior at all athletic events.
Attendance at Towson High School athletic events constitutes an acknowledgment that the event is an extension of the educational process. All attendees share the responsibility to model appropriate behavior and contribute to a positive and productive learning environment.
School officials reserve the right to remove any spectator whose conduct is deemed unruly or inappropriate. Removal may be for the duration of the contest or for an extended period depending on the severity or recurrence of the behavior. In extreme cases, individuals may be excluded from multiple contests, an entire season, or longer.
Access to the players’ bench or designated team areas is strictly limited to team members, coaches, student managers, team medical personnel, and other authorized personnel only. Unauthorized individuals are prohibited from entering these areas.
