Thank you, families, for attending Parent - Teacher conferences last month! We appreciate the time you took to connect with your child's teachers. It was wonderful to see so many of you in the building! The staff and I would also like to send a huge thank you to all the families that provided items for dinner on Tuesday and Thursday. This kind gesture was very thoughtful, we sincerely thank you!

Primary School Families: We implemented our first Primary School Family Gathering for the year on Thursday, October 22. The Families are meant to help foster the sense of belonging, inclusion, and collaboration. The “families” are vertical groups of students and staff across grades 4K-2. Students will stay in these groups as they progress through the grades and we will introduce new students from 4k to the families each fall. As “families” we will complete a variety of activities each month that build positive relationships with other students and adults.

Pick Up/Drop Off: Just a kind reminder to please remain in your car if you are dropping off or picking up in the drop off/pick up loop. This is for your own safety and the safety of other drivers and riders. Also, please remember to pull ahead as much as you can to drop off and pick up. This helps TREMENDOUSLY with the flow of traffic in the morning and afternoons. It makes the process much quicker for all. I truly appreciate your partnership with this!

**If your child requires assistance to get in or out of the car, please park in the parking lot and you can walk them to the flagpole from there. Thank you!!!

Chilly Temps: We have had such a balmy, mild fall and it's been lovely, but the weather is starting to change. It is rather chilly most mornings and the wind is especially brisk outside on the playground. Please be sure to dress your child for the weather and consider layers that they can easily take off or put on as the weather changes throughout the day. I've seen a number of kiddos outside on the playground wishing that they had a sweatshirt or jacket out there. It is a really good idea to label each jacket, hat, mitten/glove, boot, and snow pants, etc. that come to school. I have found that a silver sharpie works really well on black fabric, too! Labeling things helps a ton when we find items left behind on the playground, at lunch, or in the hallway. Please consider labeling your outer gear!

Gratitude: Every day in the announcements I encourage students and staff to pause, take a few seconds, and think of something that they are grateful for that day because happiness begins with gratitude. Today, I want to share a "thankful" that comes to my mind often these days. I am grateful for Lodi Primary. The transition to a new school this year has been busy, but also wonderful in so many ways. The staff, students, and families have been incredibly warm and welcoming! The smiles, hugs, well wishes...none of them go unnoticed. Lodi is a very special place and I know that I have said it before, but it feels like home. Thank you for your kindness and welcoming me in. I appreciate you all more than you know!

Warm Regards,

Mrs. Sarah Brings

This is a reminder of the importance of reporting an absence if a student is going to be missing from school. Families can complete the Absence Form (click here) instead of calling school or emailing the office. If you have questions or are unable to complete this form you can still call the office at (608) 592-3855.

The form is also accessible through the https://primary.lodi.k12.wi.us/ page with a link that says “Report an Absence” on the main page.

If your child is leaving early, please communicate this through the school office as well. Teachers often times are not able to check email during the day.

Each year, the Lodi Santa Project helps support local families in our district during the holiday season. For over 30 years, this program has anonymously provided gifts, winter gear, and essential items to children and families in need—all made possible through the generosity of community donations. Last year alone, thanks to our wonderful community, we were able to support over 40 families and more than 100 children.

If you or a Lodi School District family you know could benefit from the program this year, please reach out to program coordinator Pam Cunningham at lodisantaproject@gmail.com. All inquiries and information are kept strictly confidential.

Mrs. Val Bilkey - School Counselor

Hello Everyone,

World Kindness Day is November 13th. We will be continuing our school wide focus on practicing kindness in different ways. You can help with this at home too! As a family, complete the Kindness Challenge and have your child return their completed challenge for a prize!

During SEL lessons in November we will be talking about focusing our brains, having a growth mindset and obtaining goals.

Here are some ways to help promote a growth mindset and goal setting in kids:

  • Encourage helpful thoughts: Ex. instead of “I can’t do this” reframe it to be “If I keep practicing I can learn how to ___” or “This is too hard” turned to “This is hard, but I will do my best”.

  • Praise effort: Instead of praising the results, praise the effort your child put in. For example, you could say "You worked really hard on that".

  • Celebrate mistakes: Mistakes are part of learning and can be celebrated as an opportunity to learn and grow. Point out your own mistakes to model it’s ok to make mistakes.

  • Embrace failure: Failure can help kids develop resilience and grit.

  • Learn from mistakes: Ask your child what they could do differently next time to help them understand that they can learn from mistakes.

  • Make goals together: Setting goals can help kids develop independence and increase confidence. Develop action steps that will help you reach your goal. Talk through setbacks in your goal and explain that it’s ok. Celebrate the success of meeting your goals.

  • Use books and movies as models: After reading a book or watching a movie together, point out when characters demonstrate a growth mindset.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if there is any way that I can help you or your child.

Mental Health Support at School

Our school partners with the Psychotherapy Center of Waunakee (PCOW) to provide mental health support for students during the school day. PCOW therapists can help students with things like stress, anxiety, depression, friendships, family changes, grief and loss, self-esteem, and other life challenges.

Having a therapist at school makes it easier for students to get support without having to travel to an outside office. If you think your child could benefit from therapy, please reach out to Val Bilkey or PCOW to learn more.

Guardians of Lodi Pride Operation Kindness

We are excited to share that we are started a new kindness challenge to celebrate Bully Prevention month (October) and World Kindness Day (November 13th). Guardians of Lodi Pride Operation Kindness will run until Friday, November 13th. Our kiddos will guard our Lodi Pride with top secret kindness missions each day at school. We will also do some projects and read alouds focused on kindness. Kindness is something that kids learn naturally by observing adults and other kids around them but this month we really want to emphasize the importance of being kind and what kindness looks like and why it’s important. We invite you to join in the fun with us! Have your child(ren) complete the Home Kindness challenge and return it to school for a prize. Watch for the challenge to come home in your child’s folder.

4k-5 Adventure's Hiking Club

K-5 Adventurer’s Hiking Club

Join us for some fun hiking experiences. This club is open to K-5 kids who want to meet new people, hang out with friends, exercise, and enjoy nature. To sign-up follow this link and we'll be in touch! We may have to limit registration if we receive too many applicants so be sure to sign-up today! We will be hiking once in September and 2 times per month after that for the duration of the 2026-27 school year. Hikers can join as they are able. The days of the week may change from hike to hike based on our availability. We will send an email with dates ahead of time. Here are the hiking dates for November and December:

Thursday, November 12th

Monday, November 16th

Wednesday, December 2nd

Tuesday, December 15th

The majority of our hikes will be behind the High School. As funding allows, we may occasionally get a bus and head out to trails around the Lodi area. We will be sure to communicate this ahead of time. Primary school participants will walk over to the high school with Mrs. Bilkey where we will meet our 3rd-5th grade participants. 3rd-5th grade participants will need to find transportation to the Ice Age Trail parking behind the high school (by the pool entrance). There is a shuttle bus that goes from the ES to the MS and hikers can walk from there to the HS. Mrs. Walsh will park at the HS so we can lock backpacks in her car and kids don’t have to carry them on our hikes.

The advisors for this club are Val Bilkey, counselor at the primary school and Melissa Walsh, first grade teacher. Please email Val Bilkey if you have questions: bilkeva@lodischoolswi.org

This special tradition celebrates each child while encouraging a love of reading and giving students the opportunity to choose a book of their very own. Your support helps us make reading a gift worth celebrating all year long!

Ms. Amy Good - Library Teacher

Hello from Lodi Primary School Library!

This month we . . .

  • talked about how to take care of our iPads.

  • read fall books and discussed text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections, i.e. reading a book about fall when the season is fall.

  • identified the setting in a story and drew our own.

Ask me to. . .

  • tell you what we say to Miss Jen after she scans our books.

  • tell you some ways I can take care of my school iPad.

  • finish this sentence, (In the library,) “You are only in charge of ___________!”

(yourself)

Overall the students are doing an amazing job of getting their books turned in on time. Thanks for your support at home with this!

Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions at goodamy@lodischoolswi.org.

Happy reading,

Mr. Garet Sagami - Physical Education Teacher

Physical education class is off and running, literally. We are starting the 5 minute lap challenge where students are working on pacing, and seeing how many laps they can run in 5 minutes. We add them up as a class and put them on the whiteboard. After 5 days of doing the lap challenge, we add them all up and see which class from each grade will win the lap challenge trophy for their classroom!

Ask your student: If they remember what "pace" means when running, and how we can run longer if we do this.

November 14th is World Diabetes Day

  • According to the CDC there are 38.4 million people in the United States that have Diabetes. 1.2 million new diabetics are diagnosed each year.

  • Did you know the symptoms of Diabetes? They can include increased thirst, increased urination, a fruity smell on the breath, nausea, or vomiting.

  • You can reach out to your primary provider if you are experiencing symptoms or have any concerns.

  • More information: ADA: Understanding Type 1 Diabetes

Dress For The Weather:

  • This time of year has been unpredictable with fluctuating temperatures. Please help your student (s) choose an outfit that is warm, comfortable clothing, including socks. When it is cold please make sure they are wearing a coat, hat, boots (if cold, raining, or snow) so they can enjoy recess with their friends. It would be good if they have a set of clothes in their bag if they get wet from the outdoors or if they accidentally spill on their clothes and need to change.

Illness Prevention Hygiene Tips:

  • Clean Your Hands:

    • Washing hands often will help protect from germs. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. CDC: Handwashing Tips

  • Cover Your Mouth and Nose:

    • Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It helps to prevent those around you from getting sick.

  • Avoid Touching Eyes, Nose, Mouth

    • Germs can spread when a person something that is contaminated with germs then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

  • Stay Home When You Are Sick:

    • This helps prevent spreading illness to others.

  • Practice Other Good Healthy Habits:

    • Clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces, especially when someone is sick. Get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of fluids, manage stress, get enough sleep, and eat nutritious foods.

  • Vaccinations:

    • When children and their families are vaccinated, it helps protect the risk of getting seriously ill.

  • Resource: This link is a resource from the CDC of core prevention strategies to reduce the risk of you and your family from respiratory illness.

Please keep your child(s) home if they are ill. Reducing the spread can help to keep students engaged and ready to learn in the classroom. If your child has been seen in urgent care, emergency room, or clinic then please make sure you get a note to be excused from school and turn into the office at your child's school. Family Connection: Parenting with Love & Logic Family Connection: Parenting with Love & Logic

Why "Calm Down!" usually backfires.

It is one of the greatest tragedies of humanity. Increasingly we find ourselves surrounded by upset children and adults. And upset people usually do not appreciate all our great wisdom and advice. That is because upset people's brains are too busy being upset. When we drop all our amazing wisdom on an emotionally flooded brain, we are attempting to reason with a person who is blinded by emotional rage.

And how well does that usually go? We end up being frustrated or even angry and then we usually make the situation worse.

Reduce stimulus by saying less

When children become highly emotional, the hardest (and most important) thing for parents to do is stop talking (or yelling over them so much). One of the basic techniques of de-escalation is reducing stimulus. Yet, in stressful interactions most people do just the opposite and talk too much or too loudly. How often have you yelled “Calm down!!!” and have it truly work as intended.

Space, time, empathy, and understanding

Things go much better if we can become quiet and breathe, and allow space and time to work their magic. That's what a really upset person needs - space, time, empathy and understanding. Unfortunately, what our kids often get from their stressed parents is impatience and the opposite of empathy. Sure, we should expect our kids to learn how to control themselves, but when they are obviously overwhelmed with emotion, it is better to help them regulate their emotions before we talk about what happened or what needs to happen.

Practice calming skills before you need them

We've had good luck with everyone practicing how to calm down. For example, kids can practice things like taking deep breaths, balancing on one foot, or repeating helpful phrases. The key is to practice when we are calm so that we can respond appropriately when we start to get upset. Doing it together also sets a good example for our kids!

Be calm first

The most important thing to remember when dealing with people who are not calm is that the worst thing to do is to add stress to the situation. If you want things to be calm and peaceful, how does it help to demand that the other upset person calm down right now? In fact, that approach will only add fuel to the fire.

Instead, the best thing to do is take a few moments and breathe. Nice and slow. Let time work its wonders and get yourself into a calmer, thinking state. Whenever you find yourself thinking, “They need to calm down,” then tell yourself that you need to be calm first.

When we are calm, our ability to think rationally will increase and the chances that the other person will truly understand what we are saying will increase as well.

When emotions run high, staying calm and leading with empathy can make all the difference. Our audio, Keeping Cool When Parenting Heats Up, shows adults how to stay grounded, respond with empathy, and help kids regulate their emotions before small problems escalate.

Thanks for reading!
