Mr. Macken's Message

Dear Families,

I wanted to remind you that our 3rd through 5th grade students will begin taking the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) next week. These assessments are an important way for us to measure how well students are understanding and applying the state standards in reading and math.

Our goal is for every student to feel comfortable, confident, and ready when they sit down to take these tests. You can help support that at home with a few simple steps:

  • Make sure they get a good night’s sleep before each test day.
  • Provide a healthy breakfast to help them stay focused.
  • Encourage them to try their best, and let them know it’s normal to feel a little nervous.
  • Talk about the test in a calm and supportive way, without adding pressure.
  • Remind them to read each question carefully and take their time.
  • Be sure your child arrives to school on time.

Thank you for your continued partnership as we work together to help your child succeed. If you have any questions about the MCA tests, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or your child’s teacher.

Go Cougars!

Mike Macken

REMINDERS

School Board hosts Listening Session in April

In ongoing efforts to gather feedback from stakeholders, the School Board hosts Listening Sessions quarterly. The sessions provide the opportunity for community members, staff, parents, and students to meet informally with board representatives and the superintendent to discuss topics in the schools. The next Listening Session be held on April 21, 5:30 pm-6:15 pm in the District Office Board Room.

Renewal of Operating Referendum via Board Approval

Centennial Schools is committed to providing high-quality education and resources for our students. As part of this commitment, the Centennial School Board is considering the renewal of an existing Operating Levy first approved by voters in 2015. Under Minnesota State Statute, school districts may renew an existing Operating Referendum once—keeping the same per-pupil amount and duration—through School Board approval.

The 2015 Operating Levy provides $164.19 per student, generating $1.17 million annually for Centennial Schools. These funds support staff salaries and benefits, help maintain smaller class sizes, and provide classroom and programming resources for students. The levy is set to expire on June 15, 2025. Continuation of this levy is not an increase in taxes. If not renewed, the District will need to adjust its budget to account for the $1.17 million in lost funding for the 2026-2027 school year.

To ensure transparency and community engagement, a formal presentation and opportunity for public comment will be held during the regular School Board Meeting on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 6:30 PM. The Board is scheduled to take action on the renewal at its meeting on May 19, 2025.

Early Childhood Screening

(Requirement for students going to Kindergarten in September 2025)

It’s not too late to register for Early Childhood Screening! Early Childhood Screening is a free, simple check of a young child's health and development. The program connects parents and children to early childhood programs and community resources. Screening should be done between the ages of 3 and 5 years old and is required for public school attendance. It does not determine kindergarten readiness. The last screening of the school year will be held May 1, 2025. To schedule an appointment, please click here . If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to email ecscreening@isd12.org or call the Early Childhood office at 763-792-6120.
