Happy Monday MES families,

THANK YOU to all of our amazing families! Earlier last week, I sent out something about pick up, and we saw tremendous improvement with safety patterns! Students were calmer and were ready for their names to be called (on the inside of campus), families were using the crosswalk, and everyone was being safe! YEAH!

This month, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who believed in kindness, fairness, and standing up for what is right. At school, students are learning how Dr. King used peaceful words and actions to make the world a better place. We encourage families to talk together about ways we can show respect, help others, and make our school and community a place where everyone feels valued and included. For those that want a family discussion opener, ask children“What is one kind or fair choice you can make this week to help someone else?”

Please look closely at the details for the events happening this week (More Information for Parents) - there's a lot happening and we want to make sure you're "in the know!"

Just a reminder for everyone - Consistent attendance is one of the most important factors in a child’s success at school. When students are present each day, they build strong routines, stay connected with their classmates, and fully engage in learning. Even a few missed days can lead to gaps in understanding and make it harder for children to feel confident in class. Thank you also for helping your child arrive at school on time and ready to learn. Your partnership makes such a meaningful difference in their growth and success!

Friday Family Event - Consciously Celebrating Connection

We want to invite students and families to something special happening Friday, January 23, from 1:00–2:00 PM in the library. It’s called ✨ Consciously Celebrating Connection ✨ — a FREE family event for parents, caregivers, and kids!

We’ll be joined by Karen Green, who brings super fun, hands-on activities using her Conscious Care Cards. You’ll work together with your grown-ups on things like:

  • Solving everyday problems
  • Practicing healthy competition
  • Learning helpful ways to talk things through
  • Strengthening connection as a family

Think games, conversation, teamwork — and yes… after-school snacks will be provided outside before the event 🍎🥨

So grab your parent or caregiver and join us for a fun, interactive hour designed to bring kids and grown-ups closer together.

Food For Thought is an all-day opportunity to support both Malibu’s public schools and local businesses — simply by dining out.

On Tuesday, January 20, community members are encouraged to enjoy meals at participating restaurants throughout the day. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, dinner — or all three — every meal counts.

January’s participating restaurants are:

  • Marmalade Cafe

  • Howdy Malibu

  • Malibu Sushi by Howdy

  • Ollo

Dine in, take out, grab a meal at each, or stock up with meals for the week! Each meal supports local businesses and helps fund Malibu Education Foundation programs in academics, arts, and athletics.

MEF (joined by AMPS) will be at Marmalade Cafe from 5–6pm for anyone who would like to stop by, say hello, and connect — but participation is encouraged all day long, at any participating restaurant.

Dining out is a meaningful, accessible way to support our schools.
Support looks different for everyone — and every meal makes a difference

Malibu Pathway Community Showcase - Saturday, 1/24 from 9-11am at Malibu High

Malibu Education Foundation is excited to participate with you on this event, to showcase the excellent opportunities available to students throughout the Malibu Pathway. If you know of anyone who might be wondering if our Malibu Schools are for them, please guide them to this event!

Wednesdays are for Wellness! Every Wednesday, students are invited to visit our STEAM Cart at recess time for hands-on activities that support creativity, problem-solving, and emotional wellness. Each activity aligns directly with the Character Counts pillar of the month — Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship — helping students practice positive character traits through fun, engaging activities. These activities take place either outside at the STEAM Cart or if you don't see us outside - inside the Wellness Center!

Please also take a look at an event that is happening, sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu - A Year After the Wildfires: Coping with Persistent Grief and Loss. Information can be found below with the flyers. The webinar is next Tuesday at 6pm (1/20/26) and the in-person opportunity the following Tuesday at 10 am at our Disaster Relief Center in Malibu (1/27/2026).

Jaxx Theater is back! Please see the flyer below for more information on registration and auditions! This is available for students in grades 1-5 and rehearsals are after school on Mondays.

PTA News/Events:

  • We Need You on the PTA Team! 💙Joining the PTA doesn’t mean donating more money or committing to volunteer hours — and you never have to attend a meeting unless you want to. But your membership alone strengthens our school, supports our teachers, and gives you a voice in the decisions that shape MES. Every family that joins helps us do more for our kids. 👉Join the PTA: https://jointotem.com/dashboard/memberships/244d6807-8eb9-4cd5-8143-eea2452b9720

Student Birthday Parties (from the Parent Handbook)

Such observances must be coordinated with the classroom teacher and should occur after lunch or at the end of the day. Food may be distributed at school. Healthier options should be encouraged. Cakes or very sweet treats (Sugar-based foods) are NOT allowed. All-natural popsicles are the ONLY choice for birthday celebrations. Our SMMUSD Food and Nutrition Services Wellness Policy calls for staff to limit student consumption of sugar at school. No nuts, if there is a peanut allergy in the classroom. Party favors are ok to distribute. Birthday invitations for parties away from school may not be distributed unless every student in the class is invited.
