Kindergarten Registration 2023 - English

Dual Language Opportunity Dual Language Opportunity

Dear Kinnaman Pre-K and Kindergarten families,

Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, Hazeldale is expanding access to their Spanish dual language program by adding two Spanish-English dual language classes.

Hazeldale will be a hub school and will receive interested students that are currently attending preschool or kindergarten at Kinnaman Elementary School. Students from Kinnaman who enroll in the Hazeldale dual language program will receive transportation provided by the district.

This is Phase 3 of the district’s Dual Language expansion plan — increasing access to dual language programs so that all students who wish to participate have access. The mission of dual language education is to honor and develop multilingual, multiliterate and multicultural students through a rigorous, culturally inclusive education while empowering them to become agents of change in a global community. The vision of the BSD dual language program is that:

● All students attain a high level of bilingualism and biliteracy in two or more languages.

● All students value their bilingualism and biliteracy as positive assets.

● All students meet or exceed grade-level learning targets in all subject areas.

● All students learn to value the diversity of our community’s cultures and gain sociocultural competence.

● All students graduate with the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy and are well prepared to thrive as global citizens.

If you’re interested in learning more about our dual language programs or to apply, please visit our website. Students already enrolled in the dual language program do not need to reapply.

Good for the Heart

This Valentine's Day, show your heart some love by walking or rolling to school. Not only is it good for the environment, walking and biking to school gives kids 2/3 of their suggested daily exercise. Plus, it's a great way to start the day with some fresh air and physical activity! Studies have shown that physically active kids have better academic performance and that exposure to nature and outdoor play can reduce stress and help alleviate ADHD symptoms. Walking and biking to school is also beneficial for communities, as it reduces air pollution and lowers childhood asthma rates. So why not make the switch to a healthy, active commute?

Love the Bus!

Join us next week as we celebrate the big yellow school bus! During Love the Bus week we invite parents, students, and staff to take a moment to thank the 270 bus drivers that safely transport 28,000 students to our Beaverton schools daily. Elementary students are encouraged to create a card and show appreciation for their bus driver during the week. On Wednesday, 2/12, all elementary students who ride their school bus will also receive a prize! For more information and to download a card template visit www.beaverton.k12.or.us/safe-routes

A NOTE FROM YOUR SCHOOL NURSE ABOUT EATING HEALTHY

Eating healthy foods is important to growing bodies and developing brains. A healthy diet can even help behavior, mood and protect from illnesses.

Here are some tips for providing healthy foods for your children:

  • Limit sugary drinks such as juice or soda pop and focus on drinking water, low-fat milk or milk alternatives.
  • Limit highly processed foods such as chips, cookies, white breads, and candy. Instead offer healthy snacks such as veggies, fruits, low-fat cheese, seeds, nuts, air popped popcorn, and peanut butter.
  • Offer a variety of foods from the different food groups – vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy and proteins. This is important for meals and snacks alike!
  • When it comes to fruit and vegetables, fresh is best but canned works too. Just make sure to look for canned foods without a lot of additives such as sodium or sugar.
  • Preparing healthy foods and snacks can take more time, so enlist the help of your child. This can reduce prep time while also teaching your child about healthy choices.
  • Eat meals together, if possible. Turn off electronic devices (TV, phones, video games, etc.) and enjoy the time together.
  • Start small. Change is hard for all of us so making drastic changes to the foods a child is accustomed to may backfire. Introduce healthy foods a bit at a time while slowly removing less healthy options.
