Safe Routes to School Plan
This school year, the City of Superior is working with the Duluth-Superior Metropolitan Interstate Council to create an updated Safe Routes to School plan for Superior area schools. Throughout the semester, transportation planners will be collecting data around Cooper and all other schools in the district which will help to inform future transportation decisions at and around schools. Look for a survey in the October 14th district wide newsletter for parents and caregivers related to this project.
From the Desk of Mrs. Stariha
Cooper Families,
We have a busy couple of weeks ahead of us! We have our conferences starting next week and we look forward to sharing all the amazing work our students have been doing. We also have our Trunk or Treat coming up on October 28th. If you haven't done so and are interested, please feel free to stop in and sign up for a trunk. It's always fun to see the decorated vehicles!
We have noticed an increase in absences this year. Attending school regularly has a huge impact on a student's academic success starting in Kindergarten and continuing through high school. It is important that we build this habit early so your child learns right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will not only help students be more successful in school but those habits carry with them into college and at work.
Parents or guardians have the right to excuse a student's absence from school, for any or no reason, by notifying the school of the student's absence. Parents must call to notify the school or it will be considered unexcused. A student may be excused for up to ten days per year under Wisconsin Statute. More than five unexcused absences in one school semester is considered habitual truancy. If your child misses school due to a doctor appointment or is sent home sick from our nurse, these absences are exempt and do not count towards the 10 total days.
A student is considered tardy up until 15 minutes after the bell rings (9:10am). Three tardies equal a half day unexcused absence and are counted towards truancy.
Thank you for continuing to team up with us to ensure your child is receiving the best possible education. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me by phone at 715-394-8790 or by email at kristene.stariha@superior.k12.wi.us.

October is Bullying Prevention Month
Bullying is an intentional, aggressive and repeated behavior that involves an imbalance of power or strength. During the month of October, we will focus on respect which is the foundation of bully prevention. Focusing on how to be respectful, kind, inclusive, and welcoming are the pillars of stopping bullying before it can even start. We also will have specific Second Step lessons about what to do if you or someone else is being bullied, with a heavy emphasis on the power of being an upstander. We also will reinforce the school district's message of "See Something, Say Something" encouraging kids and adults to report anything unsafe they see or hear. The link to our anonymous reporting system SUSO (Speak Up Speak Out) is listed below. Anyone can use this resource as a tool to make an anonymous report if they have safety concerns either at school or at home.
Student Artwork at the Superior Public Library
Each month there will be a selection of student artwork displayed at the Superior Public Library! For the Month of October, it's art from the elementary schools! Please stop by the library to view the amazing artwork by our talented art students.
