Community Tailgate

As part of the Strongsville community I am sure you already know how large we are and how distant we might be from one another as a result. One thing that can bring such a big community together for a night is the return of Friday Night Football. Nice weather, bright lights and seeing our football players, cheerleaders and the band members all performing together in front of the community on its biggest stage are just some of the highlights of this glorious day. The only thing that can make the night better is a giant tailgate beforehand and we have one coming your way!

You are invited to the return of our FREE Community Tailgate on Friday, August 25th from 5:00-6:30pm. Free means free! We have 40 local vendor booths and SHS sports team booths with TONS of free food, giveaways, games for kids, inflatables, music, and even a hot dog eating contest or two! Our band, cheer team, and dance squad will also be performing for the crowd. The Mustang Derby will be on site selling some of their student made spirit wear just in case you need to pick up any more gear before the big game! Most of all, it's an event where we can all come together and celebrate the return of football and fall athletics! More details are in the pic below.

Athletic Fan Etiquette

Strongsville City Schools, its students, its staff, and its services are all part of a first class community. The roots of our first class nature are derived from the actions of the great families that comprise Strongsville. With that said, being first class doesn't mean being perfect in all actions. In part, it means having the desire, open-mindedness and skillset to get better when needed. Last year some of our students, perhaps unknowingly, engaged in some unsportsmanlike conduct from the bleachers at some recent athletic contests. Most of us know that being good neighbors to our opponents, their fans and the officials is a part of being first class. It might not be known to many middle school aged students who are starting to experience their first sense of freedom.

I am strongly encouraging all families to have the following conversation with your middle school aged child. Please inform them that the only acceptable behavior at sporting event is being positive. Any negative behavior/speech is strictly prohibited. Below is a brief explanation as it relates to acceptable and unacceptable fan behavior. Thank you for your cooperation!

Coach Spotlight- Matt Malensky

Tell everyone a little about yourself?

  • I've been married for close to 15 years and have 2 sons in Strongsville City Schools. I really enjoy the community and appreciate the relationships we've built with so many people in Strongsville.

What team(s) do you currently coach (in and out of SCS)?

  • I coach the 8th grade football team next year. I also coach my younger son in padded flag in the Strongsville Football League.

Why did you get into coaching?

  • I've loved football my entire life, when my kids showed interest in playing the game, it made it really easy to start coaching.

What was your favorite coaching moment?

  • I don't know that I'd call out a specific moment as my favorite. Watching players develop on the field and become leaders off the field is really rewarding. One time in little league a player gave me a custom engraved whistle with an inspirational message on it. That moment stands out to me as it shows the positive influence we can have on them.

Who is your favorite coach and why?

  • Bill Belichick. His greatest strength is player development and he recognizes he can learn as much from his players as they can learn from him.

Outside of the Mustangs, who is your favorite sports team?

  • I love the Cleveland Browns although it's very tough to be a fan of them.

What is your favorite sport to play and/or watch?

  • While I love coaching football, I really enjoy watching my kids play baseball. Sitting in the stands and watching them have fun is a lot less stressful!

What is your favorite sports memory?

  • Cavs winning the championship. It was Father's Day and I was watching with my wife and oldest son. I'll never forget that day.

What is your favorite sports quote?

  • Michael Jordan has a quote "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, lost almost 300 games and missed 26 game winning shots. I've failed over and over again in my life. And that's why I succeed."

The quote helps you understand that you can't be afraid to fail and in fact your greatest strength can be learning from failure.

Player Eligibility

Player eligibility is determined by SCS and OHSAA policies. Some of the eligibility criteria is listed below.

  • Students must maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A. Should their G.P.A. fall below a 2.0 they will be put on a weekly progress reports to assure assignments and effort are up to snuff. If not the players will be required to sit until improvement is made.
  • Students must have passed at least 4 classes in the previous quarter (5 credits if at SHS). Should this criteria not be met a student will not be eligible for the forthcoming athletic season.
  • Pay to Participate and previous year academic fees must be paid in order to partake in athletic games/contests. Students will be withheld from all contests until fees are paid.

GCC Approves Ticket Price Increase

Greater Cleveland Conference Approves Ticket Price Increase

The Greater Cleveland Conference (GCC) will be raising admission ticket prices for all athletic events beginning in the 2023-2024 school year. In May, GCC principals approved the increase in athletic ticket prices after GCC Athletic Directors conducted a review of ticket prices for surrounding conferences in Northeast Ohio and found most to already be at these price levels. Ticket sales revenue generated from the events is the main source of funding used by member schools to cover costs for sports and the overall athletic department budget. While costs of game officials, security, sporting equipment, along with all the other costs associated with these events have increased and ticket prices have not. The increase is intended to help offset costs without sacrificing family, student and community experiences. This is the first price increase the GCC has issued since the formation of the league in 2020. The GCC consists of member schools Brunswick, Cleveland Heights, Euclid, Medina, Mentor, Shaker Heights, and Strongsville.
