We had another wonderful week in first grade! It’s hard to believe the month of January has already come and gone! We certainly enjoyed the Mandarin track’s performance on Wednesday celebrating the Chinese New Year. Our homeroom also met with Mr. Ron Kemp this morning for a social emotional learning lesson before meeting at Village Plaza for our community circle.
Black History month is here and we need two parent volunteers to read. We need one volunteer from the Hartness homeroom to read on Thursday, Feb 6 from 2:00-2:15 and the second volunteer from the Gomez homeroom to read Feb 13 from 2:00-2:45. Please email me at gayle.hartness@theglobeacademy.net if you can help us out.
We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Friday, February 14. Children who choose to participate in a valentine exchange must bring in one valentine for each student in our homeroom (we have 24 students). They also may choose to bring additional valentines for select (or all!) faculty and staff members, but they are not allowed to bring additional valentines for students in other homerooms. Valentines must be preassembled and signed (including already put in the envelope, if applicable). Valentines do not need to be labeled with the recipient’s name, just the giver. Valentines can be accompanied by a trinket (such as a pencil), but cannot be accompanied by anything edible. If your child participates, please send in a small grocery bag to house the valentines.
We hope you enjoy your weekend!

This week:
Math- Unit 3. We added within 20 when one addend is a teen number. We also practiced Solve Take From, Result or Change Unknown story problems.
Reading/Phonics- We looked at vowels. We looked at words that end with an e, also known as silent e or magic e. The kids each read a book entitled The Case of the Missing Cake in order to practice reading words with silent e. In phonics we practiced rhyme recognition, onset fluency, blending phonemes, isolating medial sounds, segmenting phonemes, adding initial phonemes, deleting initial phonemes, and substituting phonemes.
Writing- we continued writing topic books. As a class we all wrote a topic book together. We choose to write all about our carpet!
Social Studies- Our historic figures study continues: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagawea (exploration), Theodore Roosevelt (National Parks and the environment), George Washington Carver, and Ruby Bridges.
Next week:
Math- Unit 3 continues. We will solve story problems within 20 with three addends, two of which make a ten; analyze methods for adding within 20 that involve making a ten; and look for and use patterns in addition expressions to add within 20.
Reading/Phonics- We will learn that vowel teams, two vowels that are side by side, often work together to make one sound in words. They will discover that the vowel teams ee and ea often make the long E sound. In phonics we will practice rhyme recognition, onset fluency, blending phonemes, isolating medial sounds, segmenting phonemes, adding initial phonemes, deleting initial phonemes, substituting phonemes.
Writing- we will continue writing topic books. After practicing as a whole group we will write individual topic books.
Social Studies- Our historic figures study continues: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagawea (exploration), Theodore Roosevelt (National Parks and the environment), George Washington Carver, and Ruby Bridges.

The students had a great week back! We worked on reading, speaking, writing, and listening during our center activities. They had fun while learning and enjoyed the nice weather this week. It was a wonderful start to the new term!
This week:
Reading: The students read books in Raz-Kids, where each student listened, read, and answered questions about the book. Additionally, we used phonics to decode CVCV words, and the students segmented words into syllables.
Writing: The students continued working on book reports and added labels to pictures of cartoons to describe them.
Language: The students compared and discussed two objects/items: a cat and a dog. Guiding questions included: How do they look the same? How are they different? What do you see? What do you notice?
Math: The students added and subtracted one-digit numbers from teen numbers without composing or decomposing a ten.
Science: The students categorized objects into magnetic and non-magnetic groups.
Next week:
Reading: The students will practice decoding words by applying phonics. In addition, they will segment words into syllables.
Writing: The students will practice writing using wordless books and familiar topics.
Language: The students will compare and discuss two objects/items: a cat and a dog. Guiding questions will include: How do they look the same? How are they different? What do you see? What do you notice?
Math: The students will find the value that makes an equation true where the total is a teen number and will use the relationship between addition and subtraction to find missing values.
Science: The students will finish the Magnets unit.
