From the Principal's Desk
October 23, 2026
It is hard to believe that we have already completed the first quarter of the school year! We are excited about parent-teacher conferences and the opportunity to connect with families, celebrate student growth, and discuss each child’s progress. We value our partnership with you and appreciate the important role you play in your child’s education.
Each week, I create a short video sharing what is happening at Jefferson and what is coming up. I share this video through email, ROOMS, and our district app. The goal is to keep you informed about everything happening at Jefferson in five minutes or less! We hope these weekly updates help you stay connected to our school community.
Halloween is coming up on Friday, October 30! We have several fun activities planned for our students. We will begin the morning with our annual walk to Laurel’s Nursing Home at 9:00 a.m., followed by our Halloween parade, classroom parties, and pumpkin stations. We look forward to a fun day filled with excitement, creativity, and opportunities to make special memories together.
We are looking forward to our annual Veterans Day celebration on Friday, November 6, at 9:00 a.m. We are honored to recognize and thank the veterans in our community for their service and sacrifice. We welcome community veterans to join us as we celebrate their contributions and express our gratitude.
In addition to our morning celebration, our third-grade students will have music programs in the afternoon. We are proud of our students and appreciate the opportunity to honor those who have served our country.
As always, my door is open and I welcome your feedback! Thank you for all that you do!
Mrs. Reardon

This is the instructional model you can count on us to follow here at Jefferson as an HRS Level 2 school. Our approach focuses on clear expectations, intentional instruction, student practice, reflection, and continuous improvement.
We will continue to share pictures and examples of learning in action so families can see what this looks like in our classrooms each day. Please watch the Cardinal Five videos each week!

Jefferson Reminders
Student Absences
Call the office (517-279-5970) before 9:00 am
Regular School Hours
Our school hours are 8:25 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. On Early Release Wednesdays dismissal will be at 2:20 p.m. When we have scheduled half-days, we will dismiss at 11:55 a.m. In the event of a two-hour delay, school will start at 10:25 a.m. Please remember that no breakfast will be served when there's a two-hour delay.
Doors will open each day at 8:05 AM.
Morning Drop-Off
Please remember that drop off in the morning is at 8:05. We do not have staff available before 8:05 to supervise.
Our school day starts at 8:25 a.m. Any student arriving between 8:25 and 8:55 will be marked as tardy.
Early Parent Pick-Up/Late Arrivals
If you are late bringing your child to school, you must walk them to the front door, ring the bell, and come into the vestibule to sign your child in. If they arrive after 8:55, they will be marked as having a half-day absence.
If you need to pick up your child early for an appointment, please call the office at least 30 minutes prior. We will have your child ready. When you arrive, come to the front doors and ring the bell. The office will communicate with you on the intercom and let you in the vestibule to sign your child out. Staff will bring your child to the door. If a student leaves before 3:05 in the afternoon it will be marked as a half-day absence.
The office is a busy place throughout the day. If we don’t answer the phone, please leave a message. There may also be circumstances where we’re unable to answer the front doorbell. Please be patient, and we will assist you as soon as possible. Thank you for being so understanding!
Student Dismissal:
When picking up your child from school in a car, you must use the car line. Any students that need to be picked up early will need to be picked up by 3:05. Anything after that, the child will do their regular end-of-day transportation. Dismissal is a very busy time in our building. We are releasing bus and car rider students at the same time. It takes all of our resources to do this safely. Students not picked up through the car rider line will be released after the bus and car riders are picked up.
We appreciate your support with this!
End of the Day Transportation Changes
No child may change his/her usual method of transportation home from school without a written note or a phone call from a parent. Please call before 3:00 (2:00 on early release Wednesdays) if you are changing their usual method of transportation as we will not be honoring any changes after this time. If your end-of-day change involves bussing, you will also need to call the bus garage at 279-5950.
News from Mrs. Hayward, Speech Pathologist.
Welcome October! I love working with students this month on their speech and language skills through reading and fall-themed activities. This month, we get to read one of my favorite books: The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, make magic potions, and complete a fall scavenger hunt. October is also AAC Awareness Month!
What is AAC?
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This is when a person uses something other than verbal speech to communicate. This can be “no tech” like sign language or facial expressions, “low tech” like drawing or a paper communication board, or “high tech” like an iPad or dedicated device.
How we support AAC Users:
The first step is access. We ALL deserve a voice. Making sure our students are bringing their systems to lunch, specials, or recess is a great place to start.
I also want to congratulate the first marking period speech graduates! Congratulations to;
Chase Mosher: Mrs. R. Henderson's Class

Gym -
Happy October. Wow it is crazy to think that we are already this far into the school year. Over the past month and a half of school we have been super busy. We have finished up our beginning of the year mile run testing in September. We will be starting here next week on seeing how students have progressed by doing a shorter run to see where they are at. I am also excited to announce that we will be having Chartwells come in and do a health unit for the students this year. Which I think the students will find very beneficial. This year has been a blast and is off to a great start and I can’t wait to see how much each of your students grow in my gym class this year.
Tips for Living a Healthy Life:
Try to stay active for 60 minutes a day. This may include going for a walk, doing a fun home workout, or going outside and playing a game. (If you type in PE activities to do inside at home thousands will pop up!)
Try to make sure you get 2-3 servings of vegetables throughout the day. This could be as simple as adding one to your lunch and two to your dinner, or you could just simply snack on veggies throughout the day! My personal favorite is adding peanut butter to celery.
Staying hydrated. A good estimate about how much to drink for an adult trying to drink a gallon of water a day is best. For a child try to drink anywhere from 32 ounces to 64 ounces a day.
Make sure to get lots of rest as it is the best time for your body to recover from all of the activities of the day.
Looking Forward:

Music -
2nd Grade
We have started our year practicing steady beat as well as developing our singing voices. We have learned our Hello Song! Currently we are singing and doing activities with the song Apple Tree and Charlie Over the Ocean. We are also working on a steady beat ring activity to Wellerman.
3rd Grade
We have learned a fun Dr. Seuss vocal warm-up and are preparing some great patriotic songs for our 3rd Grade Music Program entitled We Honor Our Veterans. We are excited to perform for you!
Art -
We have been working hard on learning Art Room expectations so we can be successful in our 30 minutes together in Art Class. We have started a unit on coloring with colored pencils. We have learned how to fade, blend, color the shape of the edge and outline with darker colors. The students are doing a great job!
