Dear Shadowlawn Families,

As we wrap up the first quarter of the school year, I encourage you to take time to review your child’s Quarter 1 report card when they are sent home on Monday, October 20. This is a great opportunity to celebrate their progress and set goals for continued growth. Our teachers are proud of the hard work students have shown so far, and we look forward to partnering with you to support their success throughout the year.

We’re also excited to invite you to our Family STEM Night on Tuesday, October 21! Join us for an evening filled with engaging science and math activities designed for the whole family to enjoy. Dinner will be provided, so come hungry for both food and fun!

Looking ahead to November, we’ll be launching our Read-a-Thon fundraiser, which helps support classroom activities, field trips, and student incentives. Your participation makes a big difference, and we’re grateful for your continued support.

Warmly,
Amber Eliason
Principal, Shadowlawn Elementary

As the holidays approach, several programs are becoming available to families. If your family is in need of assistance, please reach out to the school counselor to determine which programs you may be connected with. Additionally, if your family has experienced a significant hardship within the past year, additional support may be available.

Media Minute Media Minute

The library has been a hub of excitement and learning this fall! A huge thank you to all students, families, and staff who supported our recent Book Fair—your enthusiasm helped make it a tremendous success. Your purchases not only brought great books into students' hands but also helped us grow our library collection.

We’re thrilled to share that students have already checked out over 3,200 books this school year! That’s a lot of reading, exploring, and discovering happening in our media center.

In addition, students are diving into their Accelerated Reader goals with energy and focus. Whether they're reading for fun, for prizes, or to help their grade level win a challenge, it’s inspiring to see so many young readers engaged and motivated.

Keep encouraging your students to read daily, take AR quizzes, and explore new genres. The library is always here to support their journey as readers and learners.

International Stuttering Awareness Day - October 22, 2025

Experts agree that most children who stutter benefit from taking time to speak at a rate that promotes fluency. These guidelines represent a number of ways that adults around that child can help promote the child’s fluency.

1. Reduce the pace. Speak with your child in an unhurried way, pausing frequently. Wait a few seconds after your child finishes before you begin to speak. Your own easy relaxed speech will be far more effective than any advice such as “slow down” or “try it again slowly. For some children, it is also helpful to introduce a more relaxed pace of life for awhile.

2. Full listening. Try to increase those times that you give your child your undivided attention and are really listening. This does not mean dropping everything every time she speaks.

3. Asking questions. Asking questions is a normal part of life – but try to resist asking one after the other. Sometimes it is more helpful to comment on what your child has said and wait.

4. Turn taking. Help all members of the family take turns talking and listening. Children find it much easier to talk when there are fewer interruptions.

5. Building confidence. Use descriptive praise to build confidence. An example would be “I like the way you picked up your toys. You’re so helpful,” instead of “that’s great.” Praise strengths unrelated to talking as well such as athletic skills, being organized, independent, or careful.

6. Special times. Set aside a few minutes at a regular time each day when you can give your undivided attention to your child. This quiet calm time – no TV, iPad or phones - can be a confidence builder for young children. As little as five minutes a day can make a difference.

7. Normal rules apply. Discipline the child who stutters just as you do your other children and just as you would if he didn’t stutter.

Healthy Recipe: Ground Turkey Enchilada Stir-Fry with Couscous

Ingredients

Deselect All

1/2 cup whole wheat couscous

1 pound lean ground turkey

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon olive oil

2 cups butternut squash, peeled, seeded and diced

1 cup broccoli florets

One 15-ounce can no-sodium-added black beans

One 10-ounce can enchilada sauce

1/2 cup salsa

Suggested toppings: chopped fresh cilantro, diced avocado, shredded cheese, lime juice

Get Ingredients

Directions

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of water into a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Pour the couscous into the saucepan and stir well. Turn off the heat, cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet or wok, cook the ground turkey over medium heat, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until cooked through and browned, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle with some salt and pepper. Transfer to a bowl and set aside. Drain the excess fat and wipe the pan clean. Heat the oil in the same pan over high heat, then add the squash and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and softened, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the broccoli and cook for 3 to 5 minutes more. Add the turkey, beans, enchilada sauce and salsa and stir until all the ingredients are well combined.
  3. Serve with the couscous and top with suggested toppings as desired.

Superintendent & District Leaders Visit

SLE has had some very special visitors lately including Superintendent Dr. Leslie Ricciardelli, Chief Operations Officer Mr. Kevin Saba, and Executive Director of School Leadership Mrs. Laura Mendicino. Our incredible 5th grade Wonder Ambassadors gave a tour of our school-theme Wonders of the World exhibit. Our students explained that our school theme, "Be the 8th Wonder" is about being extraordinary, unique, and authentic. They shared interesting facts about the many wonders of the world and described the research process. We take great pride in our school and were so grateful to be able to share this with our leaders!

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is off to fantastic start! We have been practicing writing and recognizing our numbers from 0-10. We learned when to call 911 from Red E Fox, and reading is becoming one of our favorite times of the day! You can help at home by reading nightly and practicing counting objects throughout the day!

During Celebrate Freedom Week, first grade celebrated the rights and freedoms that make our country special. We learned that freedom is about the ability to make choices and that it requires us to respect the rules and rights of others.

Our fifth graders recently took their science learning outdoors to explore rust and see firsthand how chemical changes happen in everyday life. Technology

In technology for quarter 1, we have been learning and putting into practice computer safety through the Digital Citizenship unit. All grade levels have been learning varying degrees of how to be safe while working online and proper usage of their devices. In the pictures, 2nd and 4th grade students specifically are using Adobe Express to create a poster for their final project to demonstrate their understanding of what they have learned in quarter 1.
