Making the Most of a Read Aloud
Last month we discussed the benefits of reading aloud to your child, even
after they become independent readers. But how do you make the most of
the experience?
Start by setting aside a special time for reading aloud. You and your child
will look forward to this treasured time together. Have a variety of books, both fiction and nonfiction, from which your child may choose. Letting your child choose what is being read will help to hold his/her interest and build a love of books and reading.
Talk about what you see on the cover before you even open the book. This
will remind your child of the importance of connecting to the text and
wondering about what is to come.
Be playful when reading fiction. Make the characters come to life with
special voices. Encourage your child to imagine the characters beyond the
pages of the book.
Be inquisitive. Wonder and question aloud as you read. If you come to
unfamiliar vocabulary define it and encourage your child to put the
definition into their own words.
Reflect. After reading have a conversation and reflect on what you have
read.

Happy reading!
